Malachi 1

1 The burden of the word of Jehovah to Israel by the hand of Malachi.

2 I have loved you, says Jehovah. And you say, In what way hast Thou loved us? Was not Esau the brother of Jacob? says Jehovah; and I loved Jacob,

3 but I hated Esau, and made his mountains and his heritage a desolation for the dragons of the wilderness.

4 For Edom says, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the wastes. Thus says Jehovah of Armies: They shall build, but I will break·​·down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom Jehovah has·​·indignation, even·​·to eternity.

5 And your eyes shall see, and you shall say, Jehovah will be magnified from the border of Israel.

6 A son gives·​·glory to his father, and a servant to his lord; and if I be a father, where is My glory, and if I be a lord, where is My fear? says Jehovah of Armies to you, the priests who despise My name. And you say, In what have we despised Thy name?

7 You present polluted bread upon My altar; and you say, In what have we polluted Thee? In that you say, The table of Jehovah, it is despised.

8 And when you present the blind for a sacrifice, is it not evil? And when you present the lame and sick, is it not evil? Offer it now to thy governor; will he be well·​·pleased with thee, or accept thy faces*? says Jehovah of Armies.

9 And now, I pray you, implore the faces of God that He may be·​·gracious to us; while this is from your hand, will He accept* the faces from you? says Jehovah of Armies.

10 Who also is among you who would rather* shut the doors, and not light My altar without·​·cause? I have no delight in you, says Jehovah of Armies, neither will I be·​·well·​·pleased with a gift·​·offering from your hand.

11 For from the rising of the sun and until its going·​·in, My name shall be great among the nations; and in every place burning·​·incense shall be presented to My name, and a clean gift·​·offering; for My name shall be great among the nations, says Jehovah of Armies.

12 But you have profaned it when you say, The table of Jehovah, it is polluted, His bounty is contemptible, even His food.

13 And you said, Behold, what weariness! And you have snuffed at it, says Jehovah of Armies; and you brought that which was taken·​·by·​·robbery, and the lame, and the sick; and you brought these as a gift·​·offering. Should I be·​·well·​·pleased with this from your hand? says Jehovah.

14 But cursed be he who defrauds, and there is in his drove a male, and he vows, and sacrifices to the Lord what is corrupt; for a great King am I, says Jehovah of Armies, and My name is fearful among the nations.

277. And a golden bowl full of incense. This symbolizes a confession of the Lord's Divine humanity springing from spiritual goods.

Incense symbolizes worship springing from spiritual goods - although here a confession springing from those goods - because worship in the Jewish and Israelite churches consisted principally in sacrifices and the burning of incense. Consequently they had two altars, one for sacrifices and one for the burning of incense. The first stood outside the Tabernacle and was called the altar of burnt offering, while the second was inside the Tabernacle and was called the golden altar. 1 The reason for the two was that all worship springs from two kinds of goods - celestial good and spiritual good. Celestial good is the good of love toward the Lord, while spiritual good is the good of love for the neighbor. Worship by means of sacrifices was worship springing from celestial good, whereas worship by means of the burning of incense was worship springing from spiritual good.

It makes no difference whether you say worship or confession, as all worship is a confession.

The symbolic meaning of incense is also the symbolic meaning of the bowls that contained the incense, since a container and its contents, like an instrumental and principal cause, form a single unit.

[2] Worship springing from spiritual good is symbolized by incense in the following passages:

...from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the nations, and in every place incense shall be offered to My name... (Malachi 1:11)

They shall teach Jacob Your judgments... They shall present the smell of incense to Your nose, and a whole burnt offering on Your altar. (Deuteronomy 33:10)

I will offer to You burnt offerings of fatlings, with the incense... (Psalms 66:15)

They shall come from (round about) Judah... bringing a burnt offering..., a grain offering and frankincense... (Jeremiah 17:26)

...from Sheba they shall come; they shall bring gold and frankincense, and they shall proclaim the praises of Jehovah. (Isaiah 60:6)

Frankincense has the same symbolic meaning as incense, because frankincense was the principal aromatic substance from which incense was made.

So likewise in Matthew:

(Wise men from the east) opened their treasures, (and) they presented (to the newborn Lord) gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11)

They presented these three gifts, because gold symbolized celestial good, frankincense spiritual good, and myrrh natural good, and it is from these three goods that all worship springs.
