Jonah 2

Studie

1 2 And Jonah prayed to Jehovah his God from the bowels of the fish,

2 3 and said, I called from my adversity to Jehovah, and He answered me; from the belly of hell I cried··out, and Thou didst hear my voice.

3 4 And Thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, and the river surrounded me; all Thy breakers and Thy waves passed over me.

4 5 And I said, I am driven··out from in··front··of Thine eyes; nevertheless I will look again toward the temple of Thy holiness.

5 6 The waters enclosed me, even··to the soul; the abyss surrounded me; the seaweed bound··up my head.

6 7 I went··down to the bottoms* of the mountains; the earth with her bars was over me for eternity; but Thou hast brought··up my life from the ditch, O Jehovah my God.

7 8 When my soul was··overwhelmed within me I remembered Jehovah; and my prayer came··in unto Thee, into the temple of Thy holiness.

8 9 They who keep fleeting vanities forsake their own mercy.

9 10 But I will sacrifice to Thee with the voice of confession; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is of Jehovah.

10 11 And Jehovah spoke to the fish, and it vomited··out Jonah to the dry land.

Surround

People inspired by evil desires and informed by false ideas want nothing more than to attack and destroy the things that are good and true in others. In an abstract sense, it is the nature of evil to attack good, and is the nature of falsity to attack truth. And since the most effective way to attack something is by surrounding it, coming at it from all sides and cutting off escape, the act of “surrounding” in the Bible is associated with attacks by evil and falsity. If as a child you ever faced a bully, this will make sense. Nothing a victim says or does do any good; everything gets turned against him; any word or action can be twisted into an excuse for a physical attack. You can in a way be "surrounded" by one person.
