Jeremiah 33

Studie

1 And the word of Jehovah was unto Jeremiah a second time (and he was still restrained in the court of the prison), saying,

2 Thus says Jehovah her maker, Jehovah who formed her, to establish her, Jehovah is His name:

3 Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and tell thee of great and fortified things; thou knowest them not.

4 For thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are torn··down by the embankments, and by the sword:

5 they are coming to fight the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them* with human corpses, whom I have smitten in My anger and in My fury, and I have hidden My face from this city on··account··of all their evil.

6 Behold, I will cause health and healing to come··up to her, and I will heal them, and will reveal to them the crown of peace and truth.

7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.

8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against Me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against Me.

9 And it shall be for Me for a name of joy, for praise and for adornment to all the nations of the earth, who shall hear all the goodness that I do for them; and they shall dread and tremble over all the goodness and over all the peace, which I will do for her.

10 Thus says Jehovah: Yet··again there shall be heard in this place, which you say is a waste without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolated, without man, and without those who dwell in her, and without beast,

11 the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who shall say, Confess Jehovah of Armies; for Jehovah is good, for His mercy is for eternity; and of those who shall bring· the offering of thanksgiving ·into the house of Jehovah. For I will cause the captivity of the land to return, as at the first, says Jehovah.

12 Thus says Jehovah of Armies: Still in this place, which is a waste without man and without beast, and in all its cities, shall be a home of shepherds causing their flocks to lie··down.

13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places around Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass yet··again under the hands of him who counts them, says Jehovah.

14 Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise··up that good thing which I have spoken to the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah.

15 In those days, and at that time, I will cause the growing··Branch of justice to grow to David; and He shall do judgment and justice in the land.

16 In those days Judah shall be saved, and Jerusalem shall reside securely; and this is the name* with which He shall be called: Jehovah-our-justice.

17 For thus says Jehovah: unto David there shall not be cut··off a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

18 and to the priests, the Levites, there shall not be cut··off a man from before Me offering··up a burnt··offering, and burning· a gift··offering ·for··incense, and making a sacrifice all the days.

19 And the word of Jehovah was unto Jeremiah, saying,

20 Thus says Jehovah: If you can make··of··none··effect My covenant of the day, and My covenant of the night, that there should not be day and night in their times;

21 then even My covenant will be made··of··none··effect: with David My servant, from his having a son to reign on his throne; and with the Levites the priests, from being My ministers.

22 As the army of the heavens cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the seed of David My servant, and the Levites who minister to Me.

23 And the word of Jehovah was to Jeremiah, saying,

24 Seest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which Jehovah has chosen among them, He has even rejected them? And they have disdained My people, from being any··more a nation before them.

25 Thus says Jehovah, If My covenant be not by··day and night, then I have not set the stated times of the heavens and the earth.

26 even the seed of Jacob and David My servant I will reject, so that I will not* take from his seed rulers for the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will cause their captivity to return, and have··compassion on them.

612. 'Noah was a righteous and blameless man among members of his own generation' means that he was such as could be endowed with charity. This is clear from the meaning of 'righteous' and 'blameless', 'righteous' having regard to the good of charity, and 'blameless' to the truth of charity; also from the fact that the essential element of that Church was charity, in the Lord's Divine mercy to be dealt with later on. That 'righteous' has regard to the good of charity and 'blameless' to the truth of charity is clear from the Word, as in Isaiah,

They will seek Me daily, and will desire the knowledge of My ways, as a nation that does righteousness and does not forsake the judgement of their God. They will ask of Me the judgments of righteousness, they will desire the approach of God. Isaiah 58:2.

Here 'judgement' stands for things that have to do with truth, and 'righteousness' for those that have to do with good. 'Doing judgement and righteousness' became so to speak a stock phrase for truth and good, as in Isaiah 56:1; Jeremiah 22:3, 13, 15; 23:5; 33:15; Ezekiel 33:14, 16, 19. And the Lord said,

The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Matthew 13:43.

This stands for people who are endowed with charity. Also in reference to the close of the age the Lord said,

The angels will come out and separate the evil from the midst of the righteous. Matthew 13:49.

Here also it stands for people who receive the good that stems from charity.

[2] 'Blameless' however means the truth that stems from charity. For truth can come from one of many other origins, but that which stems from the good of charity deriving from the Lord is called 'blameless' and 'a blameless man', as in David,

Who will sojourn in Your tent? Who will dwell on Your holy mountain? He who walks blameless and does righteousness and speaks truth in his heart. Psalms 15:1-2.

This describes a person who is blameless. In the same author,

With the holy You behave in a holy way, and with a blameless man (vir). You show Yourself blameless. Psalms 18:15.

Here 'a blameless man' is one who is so by reason of what is holy, that is, good stemming from charity. In the same author,

Jehovah will withhold no good thing from those walking blamelessly. Psalms 84:11.

[3] A 'blameless' person is one who is true by reason of good, that is, one who speaks and does what is true from charity. This is clear from the fact that so many times the words 'walking', 'way', and also 'upright' or 'uprightness', words used in connection with truth, are applied to someone who is blameless or to blamelessness, as in David,

I will instruct the blameless in the way how far he shall come towards me. I will walk in the blamelessness of my heart within my house. Psalms 101:2.

And in verse 6 of the same Psalm,

He who walks in the way of the blameless will serve Me.

In the same author,

Blessed are the blameless in the way, walking in the law of Jehovah. Psalms 119:1.

In the same author,

Blamelessness and uprightness will protect me. Psalms 25:21.

In the same author,

Mark the blameless man, and behold the upright, for the latter end of that man is peace. Psalms 37:37.

From these quotations it is clear that someone who does what is good is called 'righteous', while someone who does truth deriving from it, which is the same as 'doing righteousness and judgement', is called 'blameless'. 'Holiness and righteousness' belongs on the celestial side of faith, 'blamelessness and judgement' on the derivative spiritual side.
