Jeremiah 17

Studie

1 The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the nail of adamant*; it is inscribed* on the tablet of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;

2 as their sons remember their altars and their groves by the green trees upon the tall hills.

3 O My mountain in the field, I will give thy belongings and all thy treasures for plunder, thy high··places are in sin, in all thy borders.

4 And thou shalt release thyself from thine inheritance that I gave to thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not; for you have ignited a fire in My anger, which shall burn even··to eternity.

5 Thus says Jehovah: Cursed be the mighty··man who trusts in man, and sets flesh as his arm, and turns··aside his heart from Jehovah.

6 And he shall be as a naked shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; but shall inhabit the blazing places in the wilderness, in a salty land and not dwelt··in.

7 Blessed is the mighty··man who trusts in Jehovah, and Jehovah is his trust.

8 And he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and by the river he shall send··out his roots, and shall not see when heat comes, but his leaf shall be green; and in the year of dearth he shall not be··anxious, and he shall not withdraw from making fruit.

9 The heart supplants above all, and it is desperate; who can··know it*?

10 I, Jehovah, search··out the heart, test the kidneys, even to give to each··man according··to his ways, according··to the fruit of his actions.

11 As the partridge gathers··together, and does not give··birth; so he who makes riches, but not by judgment, shall forsake them in half of his days, and at his latter end shall be a fool.

12 A high throne of glory from the first is the place of our sanctuary.

13 O Jehovah, the hope of Israel, all who forsake Thee shall be··ashamed, and they who turn··aside away from Me shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken Jehovah, the spring of living waters.

14 Heal me, O Jehovah, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for Thou art my praise.

15 Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of Jehovah? let it come now.

16 And as for me, I have not hurried to cease from shepherding in following after Thee; and I have not longed··for the desperate day; Thou knowest; that which goes··out of my lips was before Thee.

17 Be not a dismay unto me; Thou art my protection in the day of evil.

18 Let them be··ashamed that persecute me, but let me not be··ashamed; let· them ·be··dismayed, but let· me not ·be··dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and break them with double breaking.

19 Thus said Jehovah to me; Go and stand in the gate of the sons of the people, by which the kings of Judah come··in, and by which they Go··out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;

20 and say to them, Hear ye the word of Jehovah, ye kings of Judah, and all of Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who come··in by these gates.

21 Thus says Jehovah: Take··heed for your souls, and lift no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;

22 neither bring··out a burden from your houses on the Sabbath day, neither do ye any work*, but hallow ye the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.

23 But they hearkened not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck be··hard, that they might not hear, nor receive discipline.

24 And it shall be, if hearkening you hearken to Me, says Jehovah, not to bring a burden into the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but sanctify the Sabbath day, not to do any work in it;

25 then shall there come into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, riding in the chariots and on the horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall dwell to eternity.

26 And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from all around Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the lowland, and from the mountain, and from the south, bringing burnt··offering, and sacrifice, and gift··offering, and frankincense, and bringing offerings of thanksgiving, to the house of Jehovah.

27 But if you will not hearken to Me to hallow the Sabbath day, and not lift a burden, also coming··in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in her gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be··quenched.

966. And it became blood as of one dead, signifies that these have all been falsified. This is evident from the signification of "blood," as being the Divine truth, and in the contrary sense Divine truth falsified (See n. 30, 328, 329, 476, 748); so here that all knowledges of truth from the Word have been falsified. Knowledges of truth from the Word are the truths of the sense of its letter, that is, the truths in the Word that are for the natural man, and these, too, are Divine truths. These wholly falsified are signified by the words, "the sea became blood as of one dead." The Divine truths of the sense of the letter of the Word are said to be falsified when they are perverted even to the destruction of interior Divine truth, that is, Divine truth in the heavens. In the heavens they then appear with man as the blood of one dead. It has been frequently shown above that those who separate faith from the goods of life falsify the Word; and it is of such that these things are said, as is evident from the second verse of this chapter.

(Continuation: The Fourth Commandment)

[2] The fourth commandment of the Decalogue is that parents must be honored.

This commandment was given because honor to parents represented and thus signified love to the Lord and love towards the church, for "father" in the heavenly sense, that is, the Heavenly Father, is the Lord; and "mother" in the heavenly sense, that is, the heavenly mother, is the church; "honor" signifies the good of love; and "length of days," which they will have, signifies the happiness of eternal life. So is this commandment understood in heaven, where no other father but the Lord is known, and no other mother but the kingdom of the Lord, which is also the church. For the Lord gives life from Himself, and through the church He gives nourishment. That in the heavenly sense no father in the world can be meant, and indeed, when man is in a heavenly idea, can be mentioned, the Lord teaches in Matthew:

Call no man your father on earth; for one is your Father who is in the heavens (Matthew 23:9).

That "Father" signifies the Lord as to the Divine good may be seen above (n. 32, 200, 254, 297).

That "mother" signifies the Lord's kingdom, the church, and the Divine truth, may be seen in the Arcana Coelestia 289, 2691, 2717, 3703, 5581, 8897.

That "length of days" signifies the happiness of eternal life (n. 8898); and that "honor" signifies the good of love (n. 8897, and above, n. 288, 345). All this makes clear that the third and fourth commandments involve arcana relating to the Lord, namely, the acknowledgment and confession of His Divine, and the worship of Him from the good of love.

Arcana Coelestia # 5265

5265. 'The seven good cows are seven years' means a state when truth within the interior natural is multiplied. This is clear from the meaning of 'the cows' in the good sense as the truths belonging to the interior natural, dealt with in 5198; and from the meaning of 'years' as states, dealt with in 482, 487, 488, 493, 893. There were seven because 'seven' means that which is holy and therefore adds the idea of holiness to the matter under discussion, dealt with in 395, 433, 716, 881, as well as implying a whole period from start to finish, 728. This explains why in the dream seven cows and seven heads of grain were seen, and after that why there were seven years of abundance of corn and seven years of famine. It also explains why the seventh day was made holy, why in the representative Church the seventh year was a sabbatical year, and why after seven times seven years there was a Jubilee.

[2] 'Seven' means things that are holy because of the meanings that numbers have in the world of spirits. Each number there holds some spiritual reality within it. Visual indications of numbers have appeared to me frequently, simple and compound ones, and also on one occasion a long sequence of them, when I have wondered what meanings they possessed. I have been told that they have their origin in conversations held by angels, and that it is customary from time to time to use numbers to express spiritual realities too. These numbers are not seen in heaven but in the world of spirits, where the visual presentation of such things takes place. The most ancients, who were celestial people and who talked to angels, knew all about this, which was why they used numbers to express an evaluation of the Church. The numbers used by them conveyed a general overall idea of matters for which words served to provide a detailed description. The meaning contained within every number did not however continue to be known among the descendants of these people; only the meanings of the simple numbers survived, that is to say, the meanings of two, three, six, seven, eight, twelve, and from these the meanings of twenty-four, seventy-two, and seventy-seven. In particular their descendants knew that 'seven' meant that which was most holy - that is to say, that in the highest sense 'seven' meant the Divine Himself, and in the representative sense the celestial element of love - and that the state of the celestial man was therefore meant by 'the seventh day', 84-87.

[3] It is quite evident from the numbers used plentifully in the Word that numbers mean spiritual realities, such as the following ones in John,

Let him who has intelligence reckon the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, that is, its number is six hundred and sixty-six. Revelation 13:18.

And elsewhere in the same book,

The angel measured the wall of the holy Jerusalem, a hundred and forty-four cubits, which is the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. Revelation 11:17.

The number one hundred and forty-four is twelve squared and twice seventy-two.
