¹ And Joseph was brought·​·down to^▫ Egypt; and Potiphar, the chamberlain of Pharaoh, prince of the guards^◦, an Egyptian^◦ man^◦, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites^*, who had brought· him ·down thither.

² And Jehovah was with^◦ Joseph, and he was a man^◦ who prospered; and he was in the house of his lord the Egyptian^◦.

³ And his lord saw that Jehovah was with^◦ him, and that Jehovah made all that he^◦ did to prosper in his hand.

⁴ And Joseph found grace in his eyes, and he ministered to him; and he appointed him over his house, and all that he had he gave into his hand.

⁵ And it was, from the·​·time^▵ that he appointed him over^◦ his house, and over all that he had^◦, that Jehovah blessed the house of the Egyptian^◦ because·​·of Joseph; and the blessing of Jehovah was in all that he had^◦, in the house and in the field.

⁶ And he left^◦ all that he had^◦ in the hand of Joseph; and he knew not anything that was with him, except^▫ the bread which he^◦ ate. And Joseph was beautiful in form^◦, and beautiful in appearance.

⁷ And it was, after these words^*, and the wife of his lord lifted·​·up her eyes to^▵ Joseph, and she said, Lie with me.

⁸ And he refused, and said to^▵ his lord’s wife, Behold, my lord knows not what is with^◦ me in the house, and all that he has^◦ he has given into my hand.

⁹ He is not^◦ greater in this house than I; and he has not kept·​·back from me anything but^◦ thee, because thou^◦ art his wife; and how^◦ shall I do this great evil, and sin to God?

¹⁰ And it was, as she spoke to^▵ Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not to^▵ her, to lie beside her, to be with her.

¹¹ And it was as this day, and he came·​·into the house to do his work^▵*; and no man^◦ of the men^◦ of the house was there in the house.

¹² And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me; and he forsook his garment in her hand, and fled, and went·​·forth outside.

¹³ And it was as she saw that he had left^◦ his garment in her hand, and had fled outside,

¹⁴ that she called to the men^◦ of her house, and said to them, saying, See, he has brought us a Hebrew man^◦ to mock us; he came to^▵ me to lie with me, and I called with a great voice;

¹⁵ and it was, when he heard that I lifted·​·high my voice and called, that he left^◦ his garment beside me, and fled, and went·​·forth outside.

¹⁶ And she placed his garment beside her, until his lord came to^▵ his house.

¹⁷ And she spoke to^▵ him according·​·to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant whom thou hast brought to^▵ us, came to me to mock me;

¹⁸ and it was, as I lifted·​·high my voice and called, that he left^◦ his garment beside me, and fled outside.

¹⁹ And it was, when^◦ his lord heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to^▵ him, saying, According·​·to these words did thy servant to me; that his anger was·​·fierce.

²⁰ And Joseph’s lord took him, and put^◦ him into^▵ the jail house, the place where^▵ the king’s bound ones were bound; and he was there in the jail house.

²¹ And Jehovah was with^◦ Joseph, and stretched·​·out mercy to^▵ him, and gave him grace in the eyes of the prince of the jail house.

²² And the prince of the jail house gave into Joseph’s hand all the bound ones that were in the jail house; and all that they did there, he^◦ was the doer.

²³ Nor did the prince of the jail house see anything of all that was in his hand, because Jehovah was with^◦ him; and that which he^◦ did, Jehovah made prosper.

¹ And it was, after this, that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister, and her name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

² And Amnon was·​·distressed, so that he was·​·sick on account·​·of Tamar his sister; for she^◦ was a virgin; and in the eyes of Amnon it was hard to do anything to her.

³ And Amnon had a companion, and his name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother; and Jonadab was a man^◦ exceedingly wise.

⁴ And he said unto him, Why art thou^◦, the king’s son thus lean from morning to morning? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I^◦ love Tamar my brother Absalom’s sister.

⁵ And Jehonadab said unto him, Lay· thee ·down on thy bed, and make thyself be·​·sick; and thy father shall come to see thee, and say thou unto^▵ him, I pray^◦ thee, let Tamar my sister come and nourish me with bread, and make the nourishment before my eyes, that I may see and eat from her hand.

⁶ And Amnon lay·​·down and made· himself ·sick; and the king came to see him; and Amnon said unto^▵ the king, I pray^◦ thee, let Tamar my sister come and make·​·heartcakes before my eyes, two heartcakes, and I will be·​·nourished from her hand.

⁷ And David sent to^▵ Tamar to the house, saying, Go now^◦ to thy brother Amnon’s house, and make him nourishment.

⁸ And Tamar went to the house of Amnon her brother, and he^◦ was lying·​·down. And she took the dough and kneaded it, and made·​·heartcakes before his eyes, and cooked the heartcakes.

⁹ And she took the pan and poured before him; and he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Let every man^◦ go·​·out from me; and they went·​·out every man^◦ from him.

¹⁰ And Amnon said unto^▵ Tamar, Bring the nourishment into the chamber, and I will be·​·nourished from thy hand. And Tamar took the heartcakes which she had made, and brought them to Amnon her brother into the chamber.

¹¹ And she presented them unto^▵ him to eat, and he took·​·hold of her and said to her, Come, lie with me, my sister.

¹² And she said to him, No^◦, do not my brother, do not pressure^◦ me, for it ought not to be done so in Israel; do not this folly.

¹³ And I^◦, whither^▵ shall I make my reproach to go? and as for thee, thou^◦ shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. But speak now, I pray^◦ thee, unto^▵ the king, for he will not withhold me from thee.

¹⁴ But he was· not ·willing to obey her voice; and he was stronger than she, and pressured^◦ her, and lay with^◦ her.

¹⁵ And Amnon hated her with exceedingly great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, Arise, be gone!

¹⁶ And she said to him, There is not a cause^◦, This evil in sending· me ·away is greater than the other which thou didst with me. But he was· not ·willing to hearken to her.

¹⁷ And he called the lad that ministered unto him, and said, I pray^◦ thee, send this one from me outside, and lock the door after her.

¹⁸ And she had a tunic of various colors upon her; for thus^◦ with such mantles were the virgin daughters of the king clothed. And his minister brought· her ·out to the street and locked the door behind her.

¹⁹ And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent the tunic of various colors that was on her, and set her hand on her head, and went, going^◦ and crying.

²⁰ And Absalom her brother said to^▵ her, Has Amnon thy brother been with thee? But now my sister, be·​·silent, thy brother is he^◦. Set^◦ not thy heart to this thing. And Tamar dwelt desolate in the house of Absalom her brother.

²¹ And king David heard of all these things; and he was· very ·incensed.

²² And Absalom spoke not with Amnon either evil or good; for Absalom hated Amnon, for this thing, that he had afflicted Tamar his sister.

²³ And it was, after two·​·years of days, that Absalom had shearers in Baal-hazor, which is by Ephraim; and Absalom called all the sons of the king.

²⁴ And Absalom came to^▵ the king, and said, Behold, I pray^◦, thy servant has^◦ shearers. Let the king and his servants go with thy servant.

²⁵ And the king said unto^▵ Absalom, No, my son, let us not all now go, I pray^◦ thee, and we shall not be· too ·heavy for thee. And he pressed him, and he would not go; but he blessed him.

²⁶ And Absalom said, And if not, I pray^◦ thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?

²⁷ And Absalom pressed him; and he sent with^◦ him Amnon and all the sons of the king.

²⁸ And Absalom commanded his lads saying, See now^◦, when^◦ the heart of Amnon is merry^* with wine, and I say to^▵ you, Smite Amnon; then put· him ·to·​·death; fear not, for I^▵ have commanded you. Be·​·firm and be sons of valor.

²⁹ And the lads of Absalom did to Amnon as^◦ Absalom commanded. And all the sons of the king arose, and they rode each·​·man^◦ upon his mule, and fled.

³⁰ And it was, while they^◦ were on^◦ the way, that the report came to^▵ David, saying, Absalom has smitten all the sons of the king, and not one of them^◦ remains.

³¹ And the king arose and rent his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood·​·up with their garments rent.

³² And Jonadab the son of Shimeah the brother of David, answered and said, Let not my lord say that they have put·​·to·​·death all the lads, the sons of the king, for Amnon alone is·​·dead; for it was set at the mouth of Absalom from the day that he afflicted his sister Tamar.

³³ And now, let not my lord the king set the thing to^▵ his heart, saying that all the sons of the king are·​·dead; for Amnon alone is·​·dead.

³⁴ And Absalom ran·​·away. And the lad that watched, lifted his eyes and saw, and behold, there were many people walking from the way behind him, from the side of the mountain.

³⁵ And Jonadab said to^▵ the king, Behold the sons of the king come; as the word of thy servant, so it is.

³⁶ And it was, as he completed speaking, that behold, the sons of the king came, and lifted their voice and wept; and the king also and all his servants wept with exceedingly great weeping.

³⁷ And Absalom ran·​·away and went to^▵ Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. But he mourned over his son all the days.

³⁸ And Absalom ran·​·away and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

³⁹ And David the king was·​·all·​·consumed, his heart going·​·out to^▵ Absalom, for he was comforted over Amnon, for he was·​·dead.
