Exodus 8

Studie

7:26 And Jehovah said to Moses, Come to Pharaoh, and say to him, Thus says Jehovah, Send My people away, and they shall serve Me.

7:27 And if thou refuse to send, behold I will strike all thy border with frogs.

7:28 And the river shall make frogs to crawl, and they shall go··up and come into thy house, and into thy bed chamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and on thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneading-troughs.

7:29 And on thee, and on thy people, and on all thy servants, shall the frogs go··up.

1 And Jehovah said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch thy hand with thy rod over the rivers, over the channels of the Nile, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to go··up on the land of Egypt.

2 And Aaron stretched his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs went··up, and covered the land of Egypt.

3 And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments, and caused frogs to go··up on the land of Egypt.

4 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said, Supplicate ye to Jehovah, and He shall remove the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will send· the people ·away, and they shall sacrifice to Jehovah.

5 And Moses said to Pharaoh, Have honor* over me. How··long shall I supplicate for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to cut··off the frogs from thee, and from thy houses? Only in the Nile shall they be left.

6 And he said, To tomorrow. And he said, Be it according··to thy word; therefore thou mayest know that there is none as Jehovah our God.

7 And the frogs shall be removed from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; only in the Nile shall they be left.

8 And Moses and Aaron went out from before Pharaoh; and Moses cried to Jehovah upon the word of the frogs which He had laid on Pharaoh.

9 And Jehovah did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the courts, and out of the fields.

10 And they piled· them ·up, heaps and heaps; and the land stank.

11 And Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, and he made heavy his heart, and heard them not, as Jehovah had spoken.

12 And Jehovah said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, and it shall become lice in all the land of Egypt.

13 And they did so; and Aaron stretched··out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the land, and there was lice on man and on beast; all the dust of the land became lice in all the land of Egypt.

14 And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring··out lice, and they were· not ·able; and there was louse on man and on beast.

15 And the magicians said to Pharaoh, This is the finger of God; and the heart of Pharaoh was made··firm, and he hearkened not to them, as Jehovah had spoken.

16 And Jehovah said to Moses, Get··up··early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he goes forth to the waters; and say to him, Thus says Jehovah, Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

17 For if thou send· not My people ·out, behold I send among thee, and among thy servants, and among thy people, and into thy houses, a flying··swarm; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with the flying··swarm, and even the ground on which it is.

18 And I will set··apart in that day the land of Goshen, upon which My people stand, that no flying··swarm be there; to the end that thou mayest··know that I am Jehovah in the midst of the land.

19 And I will set redemption between My people and thy people; tomorrow shall this sign be.

20 And Jehovah did so; and there came the heavy flying··swarm into the house of Pharaoh, and into the house of his servants, and into all the land of Egypt; the land was destroyed from before the flying··swarm.

21 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.

22 And Moses said, It is not right to do so, for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to Jehovah our God; lo, we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to their eyes, and will they not stone us?

23 We will go a way of three days into the wilderness, and will sacrifice to Jehovah our God, as He has said to us.

24 And Pharaoh said, I will send you, and you shall sacrifice to Jehovah your God in the wilderness; only being··far be· not ·far in going; supplicate for me.

25 And Moses said, Behold I go··out from thee, and I will supplicate to Jehovah that He may remove the flying··swarm from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow; only let not Pharaoh delude us again in not sending· the people ·out to sacrifice to Jehovah.

26 And Moses went··out from with Pharaoh, and he supplicated to Jehovah.

27 And Jehovah did according··to the word of Moses; and He removed the flying··swarm from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; not one was left.

28 And Pharaoh made··heavy his heart this time also, and he did not let· the people ·go.

7560. 'And will not be gathered home' means which is not in safe keeping. This is clear from the meaning of 'not being gathered home' as not being placed in safe keeping. For 'home' or 'house' is the inner part of the natural mind where goodness and truth reside, and it is also the rational mind, and so where the real person is, dealt with in 3578, 4973, 5023, 7353. Therefore 'being gathered home' is being gathered to an inward position and stored away there. Goodness and truth are stored away inwardly and placed in safe keeping there by the Lord, even in the evil, in order that something of what makes them human may still remain; for without goodness and truth nobody is truly a human being. What are stored away and placed in safe keeping are indeed goodness and truth. Through them communication is effected with heaven; and to the extent that a person is in communication with heaven he is a human being. The evil, including those in hell, are - it is true - in communication with heaven; but they are in no way linked to it through goodness and truth. For the moment that goodness and truth flow down from heaven and enter hell they are turned into evil and falsity, and the link is instantly broken. This is what their communication is like. But through the goodness and truth stored away and placed in safe keeping interiorly a link does exist. With the evil however the truths and forms of good stored away there do no more than enable them to engage in reasoning, think and consequently speak on a sensory level, and thereby substantiate falsity and defend evil. Of all the goodness and truth that have been stored away and placed in safe keeping within them, no more than this can be released; for if more were released the truths and forms of good would be destroyed and so the evil would be left with nothing human at all.

5006. 'And she took hold of him by his garment' means that unspiritual truth attached itself to the outermost existence of spiritual truth. This is clear from the representation of Potiphar's wife, to whom these words refer, as unspiritual natural truth, dealt with in 4988; from the meaning of taking hold of' in this case as attaching itself; and from the meaning of 'garment' as truth, dealt with in 1073, 2576, 4545, 4763, in this case the outermost existence of spiritual truth, which in this state is Joseph's - 'Joseph' here representing spiritual natural good, 4988, 4992. For it was to the truth belonging to this good that unspiritual natural truth wished to become joined, as is evident from the train of thought in the internal sense.

[2] But as to what a wish on the part of unspiritual natural truth to become joined to spiritual natural truth may be and what is implied by it, this is a mystery at the present day, chiefly because few people have any concern or wish to know what spiritual truth is and what unspiritual truth is. Indeed that lack of concern is so great that people are hardly willing to listen when the word spiritual is used, for at the mere mention of this a kind of darkness instantly descends upon them, and along with this a melancholy feeling, which gives rise to a distaste for the word and so a rejection of it. The truth of this has also been demonstrated to me. While I was once pondering on these matters, some spirits from the Christian world were present, who were then taken back into the state that had been theirs in the world. The mere thought of spiritual good and truth not only gave them a melancholy feeling; it also seized them with such loathing on account of their aversion to it that they said they felt as they had done in the world when they wanted to vomit. But I was allowed to tell them that this happened because their affections were centred solely on earthly, bodily, and worldly interests; and when a person is concerned solely with these, the things of heaven nauseate him. I also told those spirits that when they had gone to church where the Word was preached they had not gone out of any wish to know the things of heaven, but out of some other desire present in them since early childhood. This experience showed me what the Christian world is like at the present day.

[3] The overall reason why this is the situation is that the Christian Church at the present day preaches faith alone, not charity, and so doctrine, not life. And when the Church fails to preach life, no one acquires any affection for good; and when there is no affection for good, neither is there any for truth. Consequently most people find it contrary to their life's delight to listen to anything about the things of heaven beyond what they have known since they were young children.

[4] But the fact of the matter is that a person exists in the world to the end that he may be introduced through the services he renders there into the things of heaven. But his life in the world lasts barely a moment so to speak, compared with his life after death; for the latter goes on for ever. Yet there are few who believe that they will be alive after death, which explains why heavenly things are of little importance to them. And this I can positively declare, that a person is in the next life as soon as he has died, carrying on to the full the life he was leading in the world; the nature of his life remains the same as it was in the world. I can positively declare this to be so because I know it to be so. I have talked to almost all those I knew during their earthly lives after these were over. I have therefore been allowed to know through actual experience the nature of the lot that awaits everyone - that each person's lot is determined by the life he has led. But the kind of people mentioned above do not believe any of this. As to what a wish on the part of unspiritual natural truth to become joined to spiritual natural truth may be, and what is implied by it, meant by 'she took hold of Joseph by his garment', this will be discussed in what follows immediately below.
