Exodus 6

Studie

And Jehovah said to Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh; for by a firm hand shall he send· them ·away, and by a firm hand shall he drive· them ·out of his land.

And God spoke to Moses, and said to him, I am Jehovah.

And was seen by Abraham, by Isaac, and by Jacob, in God Shaddai; and by my name Jehovah I was· not ·known to them*.

And I also raised··up My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their sojournings, in which they sojourned.

And I have also heard the groaning of the sons of Israel, whom the Egyptians make to serve; and I have remembered My covenant.

Therefore say to the sons of Israel, I am Jehovah, and I will cause you to go··out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rescue you from their servitude; and I will redeem you with a stretched··out arm, and with great judgments.

And I will take you to Me for a people, and I will be to you for God, and you shall··know that I am Jehovah your God, who leads you out from under the burdens of Egypt.

And I will bring you to the land where I lifted up my hand to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am Jehovah.

And Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel; and they heard not Moses for distress of spirit, and for hard service.

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

Come, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and let him send the sons of Israel out of his land.

And Moses spoke before Jehovah, saying, Behold the sons of Israel have not hearkened to me; and how shall Pharaoh hearken to me, and I uncircumcised of lips?

And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them a command to the sons of Israel, and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to lead out the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

These are the heads of their fathershouses: the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel; Enoch and Pallu, Chezron and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben.

And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman; these are the families of Simeon.

And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their births; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari; and the years of the life of Levi were seven and thirty and a hundred years.

The sons of Gershon; Libni and Shimei, according to their families.

And the sons of Kohath; Amram, and Izehar, and Hebron, and Uzziel; and the years of the life of Kohath were three and thirty and a hundred years.

And the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of Levi according to their births.

And Amram took Jochebed his aunt to him for a woman; and she gave··birth for him to Aaron and Moses; and the years of the life of Amram were seven and thirty and a hundred years.

And the sons of Izehar: Korah and Nepheg, and Zichri.

And the sons of Uzziel: Mishael and Elzaphan, and Sithri.

And Aaron took him Elisheba, the daughter of Aminadab, the sister of Nahshon, for a woman; and for him she gave··birth to Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

And the sons of Korah: Assir and Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites.

And Eleazar the son of Aaron took to himself from the daughters of Putiel to himself for a woman; and for him she gave··birth to Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers of the Levites for their families.

This is the Aaron and Moses to whom Jehovah said, bring··out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies.

These are those who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to lead out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt. This is the Moses and Aaron.

And it was, in the day that Jehovah spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt,

and Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, I am Jehovah; speak thou to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I speak to thee.

And Moses said before Jehovah, Behold I am uncircumcised in lips, and how shall Pharaoh hear me?

7985. It says that 'the dwelling of the children of Israel, when they dwelt in Egypt, lasted four hundred and thirty years', and in addition to this that 'at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even on this same day, all the hosts of Jehovah went out of the land of Egypt'. But in actual fact the dwelling of the children of Israel from Jacob's going down into Egypt until the departure of his descendants at this time lasted no more than half that time, no more than 215 years, as is evident from chronological references in Sacred Scripture. For Moses was begotten by Amram, Amram by Kohath, and Kohath by Levi; and Kohath came into Egypt along with Levi his father, Genesis 46:11. Kohath lived 133 years, Exodus 6:18; Amram, who beget Aaron and Moses, lived 137 years, Exodus 6:20 and Moses was eighty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, Exodus 7:7. No mention is made of Kohath's age in years when Amram was born, or of Amram's when Moses was born. But the length of time the people were in Egypt was clearly not 430 years, since the ages of these three do not add up to as much as 430 years, only to 350, as one may see by adding the 133 years of Kohath's life to the 137 years of Amram's, and then these to Moses' 80 years when he stood before Pharaoh. And they are less than that if one adds the years from father's birth to son's. The length of time was 215 years, as chronological references show. But the time from Abraham's going down into Egypt to the departure of the children of Israel was 430 years, as again chronological references show. And from this it now becomes clear that 430 years here is used to mean the whole period of time beginning right back with Abraham, not with Jacob. These years have been marked out and referred to as 'the years of the dwelling of the children of Israel in Egypt' on account of the internal sense. In the internal sense those years mean a state made complete and the duration of vastation undergone by those belonging to the spiritual Church who were held back on the lower earth until the Lord's Coming, when they were delivered, matters regarding which, see 6854, 6914, 7035, 7091, 7828, 7932.
