1 QUESTE son le parole, le quali Mosè pronunziò a tutto Israele, di qua dal Giordano, nel deserto, nella campagna, dirincontro a Suf, fra Paran, e Tofel, e Laban, e Haserot, e Dizahab.

2 Vi sono undici giornate da Horeb, per la via del monte di Seir, fino a Cades-barnea.

3 Or l’anno quarantesimo, alle calendi dell’undecimo mese, Mosè parlò a’ figliuoli d’Israele, secondo tutto ciò che il Signore gli aveva comandato di dir loro,

4 dopo ch’ebbe sconfitto Sihon, re degli Amorrei, il quale abitava in Hesbon, e. Og, re di Basan, che abitava in Astarot, e in Edrei.

5 Di qua dal Giordano, nel paese di Moab, Mosè imprese a dichiarar questa Legge dicendo:

6 Il Signore Iddio nostro parlò a noi in Horeb, dicendo: Voi siete assai dimorati in questo monte.

7 Mettetevi in cammino, partitevi di qui, ed entrate ne’ monti degli Amorrei, e in tutte le lor vicinanze, nella campagna, nel monte, nella pianura, nella parte meridionale, e nella costa del mare, nel paese de’ Cananei, e nel Libano, fino al gran Fiume, ch’è il Fiume Eufrate.

8 Ecco, io ho posto il paese in vostro potere: entrate, e possedete il paese, il quale il Signore giurò a’ vostri padri, ad Abrahamo, a Isacco, e a Giacobbe, ch’egli lo darebbe loro, e alla lor progenie dopo loro.

9 E in quel tempo io vi parlai, dicendo: Io non posso reggervi solo.

10 Il Signore Iddio vostro vi ha moltiplicati, ed ecco, oggi voi siete come le stelle del cielo, in moltitudine.

11 Il Signore Iddio de’ vostri padri vi accresca pure mille volte più, e benedicavi, siccome egli vi ha parlato.

12 Come potrei io portar solo la fatica, e il carico di voi, e le vostre liti?

13 Datemi d’infra le vostre tribù degli uomini savi, e intendenti, e ben riconosciuti, e io ve li costituirò per Capi.

14 E voi mi rispondeste, e diceste: Egli è bene di far ciò che tu dici.

15 Allora io presi de’ principali delle vostre tribù, uomini savi, e ben riconosciuti, e li costituii Capi sopra voi, Capi di migliaia, Capi di centinaia, Capi di cinquantine, Capi di decine, e Ufficiali per le vostre tribù.

16 E in quel tempo comandai, e dissi a’ vostri giudici: Date udienza a’ vostri fratelli negli affari che avranno insieme, e giudicate giustamente fra l’uno uomo e l’altro; fratello, o straniere ch’egli gli sia.

17 Non riguardate alla qualità della persona nel giudicio; ascoltate così il piccolo, come il grande; non temete di alcun uomo; conciossiachè il giudicio appartenga a Dio; e rapportate a me le cose che saranno troppo difficili per voi, ed io le udirò.

18 In quel tempo ancora vi comandai tutte le cose che dovete fare.

19 Poi noi ci partimmo di Horeb, e camminammo per tutto quel grande e spaventevole deserto, il qual voi avete veduto, traendo al monte degli Amorrei, come il Signore Iddio nostro ci avea comandato: e arrivammo fino a Cades-barnea.

20 Allora io vi dissi: Voi siete arrivati al monte degli Amorrei, il quale il Signore Iddio nostro ci dona.

21 Vedi, il Signore Iddio tuo ha posto il paese in tuo potere; sali, possedilo, come il Signore Iddio de’ tuoi padri ti ha detto; non temere, e non ispaventarti.

22 E voi vi accostaste tutti a me, e diceste: Lascia che mandiamo davanti a noi degli uomini, che c’investighino il paese, e ci rapportino alcuna cosa del cammino per lo quale abbiamo da salire, e delle città alle quali abbiamo da venire.

23 E la cosa mi aggradì; e io presi dodici uomini di voi, uno per tribù;

24 ed essi si misero in cammino; e, saliti al monte, pervennero fino alla valle di Escol, e spiarono il paese.

25 E presero in mano del frutto di esso, e cel portarono, e fecero la lor relazione, e dissero: Il paese che il Signore Iddio nostro ci dona è buono.

26 Ma voi non voleste salire, e foste ribelli al comandamento del Signore Iddio vostro.

27 E mormoraste nelle vostre tende, e diceste: Perciocchè il Signore ci odia, egli ci ha fatti uscir fuor del paese di Egitto, per darci nelle mani degli Amorrei, per distruggerci.

28 Dove montiamo noi? i nostri fratelli ci hanno fatto struggere il cuore, dicendo: Quella gente è più grande, e di più alta statura di noi; le città vi sono grandi e forti, e arrivano fino al cielo; e anche vi abbiamo veduti i figliuoli degli Anachiti.

29 E io vi dissi: Non vi sgomentate, e non abbiate paura di loro.

30 Il Signore Iddio vostro, che cammina davanti a voi, esso combatterà per voi, secondo tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto inverso voi, davanti agli occhi vostri in Egitto;

31 e nel deserto, dove tu hai veduto come il Signore Iddio vostro ti ha portato, come un uomo porterebbe il suo figliuolo, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finchè siate arrivati in questo luogo.

32 Ma per tutto ciò voi non credeste al Signore Iddio vostro,

33 il quale andava davanti a voi per lo cammino, per investigarvi luogo da accamparvi, in fuoco di notte per illuminarvi nel cammino, per lo quale avevate da camminare, e di giorno nella nuvola.

34 E il Signore udì la voce delle vostre parole, e si adirò gravemente, e giurò, dicendo:

35 Se alcuno di questi uomini, questa malvagia generazione, vedrà quel buon paese che ho giurato di dare a’ vostri padri,

36 salvo Caleb, figliuolo di Gefunne; egli lo vedrà, e a lui, e a’ suoi figliuoli, darò il paese, nel quale è camminato; perciocchè egli ha compiutamente seguitato il Signore.

37 Eziandio contr’a me si adirò il Signore per cagion vostra, dicendo: Nè anche tu vi entrerai.

38 Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, che ti serve, esso vi entrerà; confortalo; perciocchè esso metterà Israele in possessione di quel paese.

39 E i vostri piccoli figliuoli, de’ quali avete detto che sarebbero in preda, e i vostri figliuoli, i quali oggi non conoscono nè il beneil male, essi vi

40 Ma voi, tornate indietro e avviatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del mar Rosso".

41 Allora voi rispondeste, dicendomi: "Abbiam peccato contro l’Eterno; noi saliremo e combatteremo, interamente come l’Eterno, l’Iddio nostro, ci ha ordinato". E ognun di voi cinse le armi, e vi metteste temerariamente a salire verso i monti.

42 E l’Eterno mi disse: "Di’ loro: Non salite, e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi; voi sareste sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici".

43 Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi deste ascolto; anzi foste ribelli all’ordine dell’Eterno, foste presuntuosi, e vi metteste a salire verso i monti.

44 Allora gli Amorei, che abitano quella contrada montuosa, uscirono contro a voi, v’inseguirono come fanno le api, e vi batterono in Seir fino a Horma.

45 E voi tornaste e piangeste davanti all’Eterno; ma l’Eterno non dette ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse orecchio.

46 Così rimaneste in Kades molti giorni; e ben sapete quanti giorni vi siete rimasti.

Diodati’s first Italian Bible edition was printed in 1607, and his second in 1641. He died in 1649. Throughout the 1800s two editions of Diodati’s text were printed by the British Foreign Bible Society. This is the more recent 1894 edition, translated by Claudiana.

9857. 'And you shall make a breastplate of judgement' means that which has regard to Divine Truth shining forth from Divine Good. This is clear from the meaning of 'a breastplate' as Divine Truth shining forth from the Lord's Divine Good within last and lowest things, dealt with in 9823. It is called 'a breastplate of judgement' because it gave answers, and through these Divine Truth was revealed; furthermore Divine Truth, and therefore doctrinal teachings and a life in accord with them, is meant in the Word by 'judgement'. This then is why this breastplate is referred to as 'the breastplate of judgement', and also further on in this chapter as 'the judgement', in verse 30 - 'Aaron shall carry the judgement of the children of Israel over his heart before Jehovah continually'. And when Joshua was chosen to be leader of the people, it says that he was to stand before Eleazar the priest, who would inquire for him by the judgement of the Urim before Jehovah, Numbers 27:21.

[2] 'Judgement' means Divine Truth and intelligence springing from It, as a consequence of which it means religious teachings and a life in accord with them. This is clear from a large number of places in the Word, such as the following: In Isaiah,

The vineyard of Jehovah Zebaoth is the house of Israel. He looked for judgement, but behold, festering; for righteousness, but behold, a cry. Isaiah 5:7.

'Looking for judgement' means intelligence springing from Divine Truth, and a life in accord with the commandments. In the same prophet,

On the throne there sat in truthfulness, in the tabernacle of David, one who judges and seeks judgement. Isaiah 16:5.

This refers to the Lord's Coming. 'The throne' on which He is going to sit means Divine Truth that emanates from Him, and consequently means the spiritual kingdom, see 2129, 5313, 6397, 8625, 9039. 'Judging judgement' means teaching Divine Truth, and 'seeking judgement' people's acceptance of it.

[3] In the same prophet,

On that day Jehovah will be a tiara of beauty for the remnant of His people, and a spirit of judgement to him who sits in judgement. Isaiah 28:5-6.

'A tiara of beauty', when these words have reference to Jehovah, that is, the Lord, means Divine Intelligence, see above in 9827; and 'a spirit of judgement' means wisdom that springs from Divine Truth, 9818. 'To him who sits in judgement' means one who informs people about or teaches Divine Truth. In the same prophet,

Jehovah has filled Zion with judgement and righteousness. Isaiah 33:5.

'Zion' stands for the celestial Church, 'being filled with judgement' for intelligence that springs from Divine Truth, and 'being filled with righteousness' for wisdom that comes from Divine Good.

[4] In the same prophet,

Who has directed the Spirit of Jehovah? With whom did He deliberate, that He might make Him intelligent, and instruct Him in the way of judgement, and teach Him knowledge, and show Him the way of intelligence? Isaiah 40:13-14.

'The Spirit of Jehovah' means Divine Truth, 9818. 'Instructing Him in the way of judgement' self-evidently means making him knowledgeable, intelligent, and wise. In Jeremiah,

The stork in the sky knows her appointed times, but Jehovah's people do not know the judgement of Jehovah. How can you say, We are wise, and the law of Jehovah is with us? Jeremiah 8:7-8.

'Not knowing the judgement of Jehovah' stands for ignorance of Divine Truth, the source of wisdom; and this is why it says, 'How can you say, We are wise?'

[5] In the same prophet,

Woe to him who builds his house without righteousness, and his upper rooms without judgement! Jeremiah 22:13.

'Building upper rooms without judgement' stands for absorbing ideas that are not true. In Hosea,

I will betroth you to Me forever in righteousness and in judgement, and I will betroth you to Me in truth. Hosea 2:19-20.

'Betrothing in judgement' stands for joining by means of Divine Truth, thus by means of faith and the life of faith. In Amos,

Let judgement flow like water, and righteousness like a mighty torrent. Amos 5:24.

In the same prophet,

You have turned judgement into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood. Amos 6:12.

Here also 'judgement' stands for intelligence that springs from Divine Truth, and for a life based on this.

[6] In Zephaniah,

Jehovah in the morning will bring His judgement to light. Zephaniah 3:5.

'Bringing judgement to light' stands for revealing Divine Truth. In Moses,

All the ways of Jehovah are judgement. Deuteronomy 32:4.

In David,

O Jehovah, Your truth reaches up to the skies, Your righteousness is like the mountains of God, Your judgements [like] the great abyss. Psalms 36:5-6.

In the same author,

Jehovah will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgement as the noonday. Psalms 37:6.

In the same author,

Hear my voice according to Your mercy; O Jehovah, revive me according to Your judgements. Psalms 119:149.

In these places 'judgement' and 'judgements' stand for Divine Truth.

[7] In Luke,

Woe to you Pharisees! You pass by the judgement and the love of God. These you ought to have done. Luke 11:42.

'Passing by the judgement of God' stands for shunning Divine Truth, and 'passing by the love of God' for shunning Divine Good and a life inspired by them both. The fact that this life is also meant accounts for their being told, These you ought to have done. In Isaiah,

Jehovah Zebaoth will be exalted in judgement, and God will be made holy in righteousness. Isaiah 5:16.

In the same author,

... upon the throne of David to establish the kingdom in judgement and in righteousness, from now and even for evermore. Isaiah 9:7.

In the same author,

Give counsel, execute judgement, set your shade like the night in the middle of the day. Isaiah 16:3.

'Executing judgement' stands for acting in accordance with God's truth.

[8] In Jeremiah,

I will raise up for David a righteous branch, who will execute judgement and righteousness in the land. Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15.

In Ezekiel,

If a man has been righteous, one who has executed judgement and righteousness ... [if he] walks in My statutes, and keeps My judgements, to execute truth, he is righteous; he will surely live. Ezekiel 18:5, 9.

In Zephaniah,

Seek Jehovah, O all the meek of the earth, who have executed His judgement. Zephaniah 2:3.

'Executing God's judgement' stands for carrying out Divine Truth or acting in accord with it. In Isaiah,

I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth judgement to the nations. He will not quench nor will He break until He has set judgement on the earth. Isaiah 42:1, 4.

This refers to the Lord. 'Bringing forth judgement to the nations' and 'setting judgement on the earth' stand for teaching Divine Truth and establishing it in the Church.

[9] In the same prophet,

Law will go out from Me, and I will raise up My judgement to be the light of peoples. Isaiah 51:4.

'Judgement' stands for Divine Truth, 'to be the light of peoples' for to bring enlightenment. In John,

For judgement I came 1 into this world, that those who do not see may see, but those who see may become blind. John 9:39.

'Coming into the world for judgement' stands for coming to reveal Divine Truth, which gives people vision if the Lord is the source of their wisdom, but makes them blind if they themselves are the source of it and on account of this are reputed to be learned.

[10] In Jeremiah,

Swear by the living Jehovah, in truth, in judgement, and in righteousness. Jeremiah 4:2.

In the same prophet,

There is none judging judgement for healthiness; you have no restorative medicaments. Jeremiah 30:13.

In David,

Righteousness and judgement are the support of Your throne; mercy and truth will stand firm before Your face. Psalms 89:14.

'Righteousness' stands for the good that belongs to mercy, and 'judgement' for the truth that belongs to faith, which is why the expression 'mercy and truth' is also used. In Ezekiel,

Jerusalem has changed My judgements into wickedness more than the nations, and My statutes more than the lands. Therefore I will execute in you [My] judgements in the eyes of the nations, and I will scatter all your remnant. Ezekiel 5:6-8, 10, 15.

'Changing judgements' stands for altering truths as they exist in the civic state, these truths being meant by 'judgements' when 'statutes' are also mentioned, see 8972. But 'executing judgements' means passing judgement that points to death, which is damnation, or to life, which is salvation. Salvation or damnation is also meant by 'judgement' when the expression 'day of judgement' or 'hour of judgement' is used, for example in Matthew 11:22, 24; 12:36, 41-42; Luke 10:14; 11:31-32; John 5:28-29; Revelation 14:7; 18:10. The same thing is also meant by 'judgement' when judgement-making is referred to, for example in Matthew 5:21-22; 7:1-2; 23:14, 33; John 5:24, 26-27; 7:24; 8:15-16; 12:31, 47-48; Luke 6:37; 12:13-14, 56-57; 19:21-22; 20:47; 22:30; Mark 12:40; Isaiah 3:14; 41:1; Jeremiah 25:31; 48:21; Joel 3:12; Psalms 7:7-8; 9:4, 7-8; Leviticus 19:15; Deuteronomy 1:16-17; 25:1; Revelation 17:1; 18:10; 20:12-13.

6963. 'And behold, his hand was leprous, like snow' means the profanation of truth. This is clear from the meaning of 'hand' as power, as above in 6947, and as truth since spiritual power consists in truth, 6948, 6960; and from the meaning of 'leprosy' as profanation, in particular the profanation of truth, dealt with below. In the historical part of the Word a great deal is said about leprosy - about the various manifestations of it in the skin, about determining the nature of it from those manifestations, and about whether a leper should be shut away, leave the community, or be set at liberty; and about leprosy in garments, vessels, and actual houses. So much is said about leprosy not on account of leprosy as a disease but because it was a sign of the profanation of truth, thus on account of its spiritual meaning and because the Jews and Israelites more than any others were capable of rendering truth profane.

[2] For if those people had known the inner contents of the Word and the actual truths which the religious observances of the Church among them represented, and if they had believed those truths and yet led the lives they were predisposed to lead - namely lives ruled by self-love and love of the world, involving acts of hatred and vengeance on one another, and involving cruelty to gentiles - they could not have avoided profaning the truths they had once believed. For believing truths and leading a life that goes against them is profaning them. It was for this reason too that they were withheld as far as was possible from any recognition of internal truth, 3398, 3489, withheld from it so completely that they did not even know that they would be alive after death. Nor did they believe that the Messiah was coming to save their souls for evermore, only that He would exalt that nation above all throughout the world. And because that nation was like this, and is also like it today, they are still withheld from faith, even though they live amid Christianity. This then is the reason why the nature of leprosy has been described so extensively.

[3] The meaning of 'leprosy' as the profanation of truth is evident from the regulations regarding leprosy in Moses, Leviticus 13:1-end. That description contains in the internal sense the whole nature of the profanation of truth - what profanation is like if recent, what it is like if long-established, what it is like if it exists inwardly in a person, what it is like if it also exists outwardly, what it is like if it can be cured, what it is like if it cannot, what means can be used, and a number of other details. No one can ever come to know about any of this without the help of the internal sense of the Word. But since profane things are what 'leprosy' describes, a detailed explanation of the contents of that description must not be given; heaven has a feeling of horror at the very mention of what is profane.

[4] So let just the following be quoted from those regulations,

If leprosy has broken out severely in the skin and the leprosy has covered the entire skin of [him who has] the plague, from his head to his heels, wherever the priest looks, 1 and the priest sees that, behold, the leprosy has covered the person's entire flesh, then he shall pronounce [him] clean [who has] the plague. It has all turned white; he is clean. But on the day living flesh appears on him he shall be unclean. Leviticus 17:12-14.

Unless one knew from the internal sense how it could be that one who is leprous all over from his head to his heels was clean it would seem to be an absurdity. But one who is leprous from head to heels means a person who has a knowledge of internal truths but does not acknowledge them, that is, has no belief in them. Profanation does not exist with him inwardly, only outwardly, and is being removed. Therefore he is clean. But if he knows the truths of faith and believes them, and yet leads a life that goes against them, profanation does exist with him inwardly, as it also does with someone who has had a belief in them but subsequently denies them. This explains why it says, 'on the day living flesh appears in him he shall be unclean'; 'living flesh' is used to mean acknowledgement and faith. See also the paragraphs referred to above in 6959.
