1 Akkor írástudók és farizeusok jõnek vala Jézushoz, Jeruzsálembõl, mondván:

2 Miért hágják át a te tanítványaid a vének rendeléseit? Mert nem mossák meg a kezeiket, mikor enni akarnak.

3 Õ pedig felelvén monda nékik: Ti meg miért hágjátok át az Isten parancsolatját a ti rendeléseitek által?

4 Mert Isten parancsolta ezt, mondván: Tiszteld atyádat és anyádat, és: A ki atyját vagy anyját szidalmazza, halállal lakoljon.

5 Ti pedig ezt mondjátok: A ki atyjának vagy anyjának ezt mondja: Templomi ajándék az, a mivel megsegíthetlek, az olyan akár ne is tisztelje az õ atyját vagy anyját.

6 És erõtelenné tettétek az Isten parancsolatját a ti rendeléseitek által.

7 Képmutatók, igazán prófétált felõletek Ésaiás, mondván:

8 Ez a nép szájával közelget hozzám, és ajkával tisztel engemet; szíve pedig távol van tõlem.

9 Pedig hiába tisztelnek engem, ha oly tudományokat tanítanak, a melyek embereknek parancsolatai.

10 És elõszólítván a sokaságot, monda nékik: Halljátok és értsétek meg:

11 Nem az fertõzteti meg az embert, a mi a szájon bemegy, hanem a mi kijön a szájból, az fertõzteti meg az embert.

12 Akkor hozzájárulván az õ tanítványai, mondának néki: Tudod-é, hogy a farizeusok e beszédet hallván, megbotránkoztak?

13 Õ pedig felelvén, monda: Minden plánta, a melyet nem az én mennyei Atyám plántált, kitépetik.

14 Hagyjátok õket; vakoknak vak vezetõi õk: ha pedig vak vezeti a vakot, mind a ketten a verembe esnek.

15 Péter pedig felelvén, monda néki: Magyarázd meg nékünk ezt a példázatot.

16 Jézus pedig monda: Ti is értelem nélkül vagytok-é még?

17 Mégsem értitek-é, hogy minden, a mi a szájon bemegy, a gyomorba jut, és az árnyékszékbe vettetik?

18 A mik pedig a szájból jõnek ki, a szívbõl származnak, és azok fertõztetik meg az embert.

19 Mert a szívbõl származnak a gonosz gondolatok, gyilkosságok, házasságtörések, paráznaságok, lopások, hamis tanubizonyságok, káromlások.

20 Ezek fertõztetik meg az embert; de a mosdatlan kézzel való evés nem fertõzteti meg az embert.

21 És elmenvén onnét Jézus, Tirus és Sidon vidékeire tére.

22 És ímé egy kananeus asszony jövén ki abból a tartományból, kiált vala néki: Uram, Dávidnak fia, könyörülj rajtam! az én leányom az ördögtõl gonoszul gyötörtetik.

23 Õ pedig egy szót sem felele néki. És az õ tanítványai hozzá menvén, kérik vala õt, mondván: Bocsásd el õt, mert utánunk kiált.

24 Õ pedig felelvén, monda: Nem küldettem, csak az Izráel házának elveszett juhaihoz.

25 Az asszony pedig odaérvén, leborula elõtte, mondván: Uram, légy segítségül nékem!

26 Õ pedig felelvén, monda: Nem jó a fiak kenyerét elvenni, és az ebeknek vetni.

27 Az pedig monda: Úgy van, Uram; de hiszen az ebek is esznek a morzsalékokból, a mik az õ uroknak asztaláról aláhullanak.

28 Ekkor felelvén Jézus, monda néki: Óh asszony, nagy a te hited! Legyen néked a te akaratod szerint. És meggyógyula az õ leánya attól a pillanattól fogva.

29 És onnét távozva, méne Jézus a Galilea tengere mellé; és felmenvén a hegyre, ott leüle.

30 És nagy sokaság megy vala hozzá, vivén magokkal sántákat, vakokat, némákat, csonkákat és sok egyebeket, és odahelyezék õket a Jézus lábai elé; és meggyógyítá õket,

31 Úgy hogy a sokaság álmélkodik vala, látván, hogy a némák beszélnek, a csonkák megépülnek, a sánták járnak, a vakok látnak: és dicsõíték Izráel Istenét.

32 Jézus pedig elõszólítván az õ tanítványait, monda: Szánakozom e sokaságon, mert három napja immár, hogy velem vannak, és nincs mit enniök. Éhen pedig nem akarom õket elbocsátani, hogy valamiképen ki ne dõljenek az úton.

33 És mondának néki az õ tanítványai: Honnét volna e pusztában annyi kenyerünk, hogy megelégítsünk ily nagy sokaságot?

34 És monda nékik Jézus: Hány kenyeretek van? Õk pedig mondának: Hét, és néhány halunk.

35 És parancsolá a sokaságnak, hogy telepedjenek le a földön.

36 És vevén a hét kenyeret és a halakat, és hálákat adván, megtöré, és adá az õ tanítványainak, a tanítványok pedig a sokaságnak.

37 És mindnyájan evének, és megelégedének; és fölszedék a maradék darabokat hét teli kosárral.

38 A kik pedig ettek vala, négyezeren valának férfiak, asszonyokon és gyermekeken kívül.

39 És elbocsátván a sokaságot, beszálla a hajóba, és elméne Magdala határaiba.

9416. 'And I will give you tablets of stone' means the book of the law, or the Word in its entirety. This is clear from the meaning of 'tablets' as objects on which matters of doctrine and life have been inscribed, in this instance matters of heavenly doctrine and of life in keeping with it. The reason why those tablets mean the book of the law or the Word in its entirety is that the things which had been inscribed on them contained in a general way all matters of life and of that heavenly doctrine. This also explains why the things inscribed on them are called the ten words, Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 10:4. For 'ten' in the internal sense means all, and 'words' means truths that are matters of doctrine and forms of good that are matters of life. For the meaning of 'ten' as all, see 3107, 4638, 8468, 8540, and for that of 'words' as truths and forms of good that are matters of life and doctrine, 1288, 4692, 5272. This is why those tablets mean the Word in its entirety, just as the Law does, which in a restricted sense means the things which had been inscribed on those tablets, in a less restricted sense the Word that was written through Moses, in a broad sense the historical section of the Word, and in the broadest sense the Word in its entirety, see what has been shown in 6752. Furthermore the things which had been inscribed on those tablets belonged to the first stage in the revelation of Divine Truth; they were also declared in actual words uttered by the Lord before all the Israelite people. What belongs to the first stage means all the rest in their proper order; and the fact that those things were declared in actual words uttered by the Lord means direct Divine inspiration in all other stages of revelation as well. The reason why those tablets were made of stone was that 'stone' means truth, 643, 1298, 3720, 6426, the lowest levels of truth, to be exact, 8609. The lowest levels of God's truth constitute the letter of the Word as it exists on this planet, 9360.

[2] There was not one tablet but two, to represent the joining of the Lord to the Church through the Word, and through the Church to the human race. This also is why they are called the tablets of the covenant, Deuteronomy 9:9, 11, 15, and why the words inscribed on them are called the words of the covenant, Exodus 34:27-28, also the covenant, Deuteronomy 4:13, 23. And the ark itself in which the tablets had been deposited was called the ark of the covenant, Numbers 10:33; 14:44; Deuteronomy 10:8; 31:9, 25-26; Joshua 3:3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17; 4:7, 9, 18; 6:6, 8; 8:33; Judges 20:27; 1 Samuel 4:3-5; 2 Samuel 15:24; 1 Kings 3:15; 6:19; 8:1, 6; Jeremiah 3:16. For a covenant is a joining together, 665, 666, 1023, 1038, 1864, 1996, 2003, 2021, 6804, 8767, 8778, 9396. This explains why those tablets were divided from each other yet were joined together by being laid alongside each other. The writing on them ran across continuously from one tablet onto the other, like the writing on a single tablet. It was not, as people ordinarily think, that some commandments were written on one tablet and some on the other. For a single object divided in two, and the two parts then brought together or given each to the other, means the Lord and man joined together. The establishment of covenants was therefore accomplished in similar ways, that with Abraham for example by parting down the middle a heifer, she-goat, and ram, and laying each part opposite the other, Genesis 15:9-12; in verses 6 and 8 of the present chapter by putting blood in bowls and then sprinkling it half over the altar and half over the people; and generally in all sacrifices by burning one part on the altar and giving the other part to the people to eat. The like was also represented by the Lord when He broke bread, Matthew 14:19; 15:36; 26:26; Mark 6:41; 8:6; 14:22; Luke 9:16; 22:19; 24:30-31, 35. Here also is the reason why 'two' in the Word means things joined together, 5194, 8423, here the Lord and heaven, or the Lord and the Church, joined together, thus also goodness and truth joined together, which is called the heavenly marriage. From all this it becomes clear why it is that there were two tablets and that both sides of them were written on, from edge to edge, Exodus 32:15-16.

[3] Furthermore when the writing and engraving on tablets is mentioned in the Word it means those things that must be imprinted in people's memory and on their life, and so remain there, as in Isaiah,

Write it on a tablet among them, and express it in a book, 1 so that it may be for time to come forever, even to eternity. Isaiah 30:8.

In Jeremiah,

The sin of Judah has been written with a pen of iron; with a point of diamond it has been engraved on the tablet of their heart, and at the horns of your altars. Jeremiah 17:1.

In Habakkuk,

Jehovah said, Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that one running by may read it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; if it tarries, wait for it, because it will surely come. Habakkuk 2:2-3.

5259. 'And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph' means thought expressed by the natural but belonging to the celestial of the spiritual. This is clear from what has been stated above in 5151. Where the same words occur, except that there it says that Pharaoh said to Joseph, here that he spoke to him; for 'said' means perception, whereas 'spoke' means thought, 2271, 2287, 2619. The reason 'Pharaoh spoke to Joseph' means thought which is expressed by the natural but belongs to the celestial of the spiritual, and not the other way round, is that when thought is going on in what is exterior, the source of such thought does not lie there but in what is interior. Or what amounts to the same, when thought is going on in what is lower, nothing else than what is higher is the source of it. Even so, while the thought belonging to what is interior or higher is going on in what is exterior or lower, it does seem as though the exterior or lower is itself the source of the thought going on in it. But that is an illusion. It is like a person who sees some object in a mirror but does not know that the mirror is there. He supposes that the object exists where it appears to do so, but in reality it does not exist there.

[2] Now because the celestial of the spiritual is interior or higher, and the natural is exterior or lower, 'Pharaoh spoke to Joseph' therefore means in the internal sense thought expressed by the natural but belonging to the celestial of the spiritual. In short, nothing in a lower position possesses anything self-derived whatsoever. Any ability it possesses comes from what is higher, which being so it plainly follows that the Highest one of all, that is, the Divine, is the source of everything. Consequently the source of a person's thought proceeding from his understanding and of his activity proceeding from his will is the Highest one or the Divine. If however a person thinks false ideas and acts in evil ways, this is due to the form he has stamped on his own character; but if he thinks right ideas and acts in ways that are good, it is due to the form he has received from the Lord. For it is well known that one and the same power and force produces differing movements which are determined by the ways in which the intermediate and outermost parts are structured, so that in the human being life from the Divine produces differing thoughts and actions, determined by the forms existing there.
