1 ויסע ישראל וכל אשר לו ויבא בארה שבע ויזבח זבחים לאלהי אביו יצחק׃

2 ויאמר אלהים לישראל במראת הלילה ויאמר יעקב יעקב ויאמר הנני׃

3 ויאמר אנכי האל אלהי אביך אל תירא מרדה מצרימה כי לגוי גדול אשימך שם׃

4 אנכי ארד עמך מצרימה ואנכי אעלך גם עלה ויוסף ישית ידו על עיניך׃

5 ויקם יעקב מבאר שבע וישאו בני ישראל את יעקב אביהם ואת טפם ואת נשיהם בעגלות אשר שלח פרעה לשאת אתו׃

6 ויקחו את מקניהם ואת רכושם אשר רכשו בארץ כנען ויבאו מצרימה יעקב וכל זרעו אתו׃

7 בניו ובני בניו אתו בנתיו ובנות בניו וכל זרעו הביא אתו מצרימה׃

8 ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה יעקב ובניו בכר יעקב ראובן׃

9 ובני ראובן חנוך ופלוא וחצרון וכרמי׃

10 ובני שמעון ימואל וימין ואהד ויכין וצחר ושאול בן הכנענית׃

11 ובני לוי גרשון קהת ומררי׃

12 ובני יהודה ער ואונן ושלה ופרץ וזרח וימת ער ואונן בארץ כנען ויהיו בני פרץ חצרון וחמול׃

13 ובני יששכר תולע ופוה ויוב ושמרון׃

14 ובני זבולן סרד ואלון ויחלאל׃

15 אלה בני לאה אשר ילדה ליעקב בפדן ארם ואת דינה בתו כל נפש בניו ובנותיו שלשים ושלש׃

16 ובני גד צפיון וחגי שוני ואצבן ערי וארודי ואראלי׃

17 ובני אשר ימנה וישוה וישוי ובריעה ושרח אחתם ובני בריעה חבר ומלכיאל׃

18 אלה בני זלפה אשר נתן לבן ללאה בתו ותלד את אלה ליעקב שש עשרה נפש׃

19 בני רחל אשת יעקב יוסף ובנימן׃

20 ויולד ליוסף בארץ מצרים אשר ילדה לו אסנת בת פוטי פרע כהן אן את מנשה ואת אפרים׃

21 ובני בנימן בלע ובכר ואשבל גרא ונעמן אחי וראש מפים וחפים וארד׃

22 אלה בני רחל אשר ילד ליעקב כל נפש ארבעה עשר׃

23 ובני דן חשים׃

24 ובני נפתלי יחצאל וגוני ויצר ושלם׃

25 אלה בני בלהה אשר נתן לבן לרחל בתו ותלד את אלה ליעקב כל נפש שבעה׃

26 כל הנפש הבאה ליעקב מצרימה יצאי ירכו מלבד נשי בני יעקב כל נפש ששים ושש׃

27 ובני יוסף אשר ילד לו במצרים נפש שנים כל הנפש לבית יעקב הבאה מצרימה שבעים׃

28 ואת יהודה שלח לפניו אל יוסף להורת לפניו גשנה ויבאו ארצה גשן׃

29 ויאסר יוסף מרכבתו ויעל לקראת ישראל אביו גשנה וירא אליו ויפל על צואריו ויבך על צואריו עוד׃

30 ויאמר ישראל אל יוסף אמותה הפעם אחרי ראותי את פניך כי עודך חי׃

31 ויאמר יוסף אל אחיו ואל בית אביו אעלה ואגידה לפרעה ואמרה אליו אחי ובית אבי אשר בארץ כנען באו אלי׃

32 והאנשים רעי צאן כי אנשי מקנה היו וצאנם ובקרם וכל אשר להם הביאו׃

33 והיה כי יקרא לכם פרעה ואמר מה מעשיכם׃

34 ואמרתם אנשי מקנה היו עבדיך מנעורינו ועד עתה גם אנחנו גם אבתינו בעבור תשבו בארץ גשן כי תועבת מצרים כל רעה צאן׃

6048. 'And says, What are your works?' means and to know your forms of good. This is clear from meaning of 'works' as forms of good. The reason why 'works' means forms of good is that works originate in the will, and what originates in the will is a form of good or a form of evil, whereas what originates in the understanding, such as spoken words, is a form of truth or a form of falsity. The 'works' done by Jacob's sons, and also by their forefathers, consisted in tending livestock, thus in acting as shepherds; and by these 'works' too forms of good are meant, in particular forms of the good of truth. This meaning has its origin in correspondences, for lambs, sheep, kids, and she-goats, which are members of the flock, correspond to forms of the good of charity; and so do young bulls and oxen, which are members of the herd. The fact that these animals have this correspondence is clear from the consideration that when angels, moved by a heavenly affection, talk to one another about forms of the good of charity, flocks and herds are seen in some places in the world of spirits and also in the first or lowest heaven. Flocks are seen when they talk about interior forms of the good of charity, but herds when they talk about exterior forms, see 3218-3220. This explains why in the Word such deeds are meant by 'flocks and herds'.

[2] In general it should be recognized that every spiritual meaning contained in the Word has its origin in representatives in the next life, and those representatives in correspondences. The reason for this is that the natural world derives its existence from the spiritual world in the way an effect does from its cause, to the end that the spiritual world may flow into the natural world and act as the causes behind things there. In this way everything there is maintained in its proper path and order. For the whole natural creation is a theatre representative of the Lord's kingdom, that is, of the spiritual and celestial realities there, see 2758, 2987-3002, 4939, 5116.
