1 הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר הָיָה אֶל־יִרְמְיָהוּ מֵאֵת יְהוָה לֵאמֹר׃

2 כֹּה־אָמַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר כְּתָב־לְךָ אֵת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר־דִּבַּרְתִּי אֵלֶיךָ אֶל־סֵפֶר׃

3 כִּי הִנֵּה יָמִים בָּאִים נְאֻם־יְהוָה וְשַׁבְתִּי אֶת־שְׁבוּת עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה אָמַר יְהוָה וַהֲשִׁבֹתִים אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַתִּי לַאֲבֹותָם וִירֵשׁוּהָ׃ ף

4 וְאֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יְהוָה אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֶל־יְהוּדָה׃

5 כִּי־כֹה אָמַר יְהוָה קֹול חֲרָדָה שָׁמָעְנוּ פַּחַד וְאֵין שָׁלֹום׃

6 שַׁאֲלוּ־נָא וּרְאוּ אִם־יֹלֵד זָכָר מַדּוּעַ רָאִיתִי כָל־גֶּבֶר יָדָיו עַל־חֲלָצָיו כַּיֹּולֵדָה וְנֶהֶפְכוּ כָל־פָּנִים לְיֵרָקֹון׃

7 הֹוי כִּי גָדֹול הַיֹּום הַהוּא מֵאַיִן כָּמֹהוּ וְעֵת־צָרָה הִיא לְיַעֲקֹב וּמִמֶּנָּה יִוָּשֵׁעַ׃

8 וְהָיָה בַיֹּום הַהוּא נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות אֶשְׁבֹּר עֻלֹּו מֵעַל צַוָּארֶךָ וּמֹוסְרֹותֶיךָ אֲנַתֵּק וְלֹא־יַעַבְדוּ־בֹו עֹוד זָרִים׃

9 וְעָבְדוּ אֵת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיהֶם וְאֵת דָּוִד מַלְכָּם אֲשֶׁר אָקִים לָהֶם׃ ס

10 וְאַתָּה אַל־תִּירָא עַבְדִּי יַעֲקֹב נְאֻם־יְהֹוָה וְאַל־תֵּחַת יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּי הִנְנִי מֹושִׁיעֲךָ מֵרָחֹוק וְאֶת־זַרְעֲךָ מֵאֶרֶץ שִׁבְיָם וְשָׁב יַעֲקֹב וְשָׁקַט וְשַׁאֲןַן וְאֵין מַחֲרִיד׃

11 כִּי־אִתְּךָ אֲנִי נְאֻם־יְהוָה לְהֹושִׁיעֶךָ כִּי אֶעֱשֶׂה כָלָה בְּכָל־הַגֹּויִם אֲשֶׁר הֲפִצֹותִיךָ שָּׁם אַךְ אֹתְךָ לֹא־אֶעֱשֶׂה כָלָה וְיִסַּרְתִּיךָ לַמִּשְׁפָּט וְנַקֵּה לֹא אֲנַקֶּךָּ׃ ף

12 כִּי כֹה אָמַר יְהוָה אָנוּשׁ לְשִׁבְרֵךְ נַחְלָה מַכָּתֵךְ׃

13 אֵין־דָּן דִּינֵךְ לְמָזֹור רְפֻאֹות תְּעָלָה אֵין לָךְ׃

14 כָּל־מְאַהֲבַיִךְ שְׁכֵחוּךְ אֹותָךְ לֹא יִדְרֹשׁוּ כִּי מַכַּת אֹויֵב הִכִּיתִיךְ מוּסַר אַכְזָרִי עַל רֹב עֲוֹנֵךְ עָצְמוּ חַטֹּאתָיִךְ׃

15 מַה־תִּזְעַק עַל־שִׁבְרֵךְ אָנוּשׁ מַכְאֹבֵךְ עַל רֹב עֲוֹנֵךְ עָצְמוּ חַטֹּאתַיִךְ עָשִׂיתִי אֵלֶּה לָךְ׃

16 לָכֵן כָּל־אֹכְלַיִךְ יֵאָכֵלוּ וְכָל־צָרַיִךְ כֻּלָּם בַּשְּׁבִי יֵלֵכוּ וְהָיוּ שֹׁאסַיִךְ לִמְשִׁסָּה וְכָל־בֹּזְזַיִךְ אֶתֵּן לָבַז׃

17 כִּי אַעֲלֶה אֲרֻכָה לָךְ וּמִמַּכֹּותַיִךְ אֶרְפָּאֵךְ נְאֻם־יְהוָה כִּי נִדָּחָה קָרְאוּ לָךְ צִיֹּון הִיא דֹּרֵשׁ אֵין לָהּ׃ ס

18 כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה הִנְנִי־שָׁב שְׁבוּת אָהֳלֵי יַעֲקֹוב וּמִשְׁכְּנֹתָיו אֲרַחֵם וְנִבְנְתָה עִיר עַל־תִּלָּהּ וְאַרְמֹון עַל־מִשְׁפָּטֹו יֵשֵׁב׃

19 וְיָצָא מֵהֶם תֹּודָה וְקֹול מְשַׂחֲקִים וְהִרְבִּתִים וְלֹא יִמְעָטוּ וְהִכְבַּדְתִּים וְלֹא יִצְעָרוּ׃

20 וְהָיוּ בָנָיו כְּקֶדֶם וַעֲדָתֹו לְפָנַי תִּכֹּון וּפָקַדְתִּי עַל כָּל־לֹחֲצָיו׃

21 וְהָיָה אַדִּירֹו מִמֶּנּוּ וּמֹשְׁלֹו מִקִּרְבֹּו יֵצֵא וְהִקְרַבְתִּיו וְנִגַּשׁ אֵלָי כִּי מִי הוּא־זֶה עָרַב אֶת־לִבֹּו לָגֶשֶׁת אֵלַי נְאֻם־יְהוָה׃

22 וִהְיִיתֶם לִי לְעָם וְאָנֹכִי אֶהְיֶה לָכֶם לֵאלֹהִים׃ ס

23 הִנֵּה סַעֲרַת יְהוָה חֵמָה יָצְאָה סַעַר מִתְגֹּורֵר עַל רֹאשׁ רְשָׁעִים יָחוּל׃

24 לֹא יָשׁוּב חֲרֹון אַף־יְהוָה עַד־עֲשֹׂתֹו וְעַד־הֲקִימֹו מְזִמֹּות לִבֹּו בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים תִּתְבֹּונְנוּ בָהּ׃

498. And to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire. This symbolically means that people who wish to destroy these two essential elements of the New Church propel themselves into evils and falsities of every kind, as often as, and in the measure that, they do so.

The earth symbolizes the church (no. 285), and a plague symbolizes evil and falsity (no. 456). Thus to strike the earth with every plague means, symbolically, to ruin the church with evils and falsities of every kind.

Still, as in the case of earlier interpretations, this has to be understood, namely, that when people wish to strike these two essential elements of the New Church with plague, that is, when they wish to destroy them, which they are moved by evil to do by means of falsities, they propel themselves into evils and falsities of every kind. Moreover, because the natural sense is turned around when it becomes spiritual, therefore this statement, too, "as often as they desire," is similarly changed into "as often as and in the measure that they do." The reason is that to the extent someone destroys these two essential elements, to the same extent he destroys the truths of the Word, and to the extent he destroys the truths of the Word, to the same extent he propels himself into evils and falsities. For these two essential elements are truths of the Word, as may be clearly seen from two books containing the doctrine of the New Jerusalem, one being The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem Regarding the Lord, and the other titled The Doctrine of Life in Accordance With the Precepts of the Decalogue.

This statement, that the two witnesses have the power to strike the earth with every plague as often as they desire, is similar to many others in the Word which attribute to Jehovah, that is, to the Lord, His striking people with a plague, and its being His will to do so, even though it is to be understood that He does not strike anyone, and that it is not His will to do so. For example, in Zechariah:

This shall be the plague with which Jehovah will strike all the people who fight against Jerusalem. (Zechariah 14:12ff.)

And in Jeremiah:

...I have stricken you with the plague of an enemy, with the chastisement of a tyrant, for the multitude of your iniquities... (Jeremiah 30:14)
