Tzefaniyah 2

1 התקוששו וקושו הגוי לא נכסף׃

2 בטרם לדת חק כמץ עבר יום בטרם לא־יבוא עליכם חרון אף־יהוה בטרם לא־יבוא עליכם יום אף־יהוה׃

3 בקשו את־יהוה כל־ענוי הארץ אשר משפטו פעלו בקשו־צדק בקשו ענוה אולי תסתרו ביום אף־יהוה׃

4 כי עזה עזובה תהיה ואשקלון לשממה אשדוד בצהרים יגרשוה ועקרון תעקר׃ ס

5 הוי ישבי חבל הים גוי כרתים דבר־יהוה עליכם כנען ארץ פלשתים והאבדתיך מאין יושב׃

6 והיתה חבל הים נות כרת רעים וגדרות צאן׃

7 והיה חבל לשארית בית יהודה עליהם ירעון בבתי אשקלון בערב ירבצון כי יפקדם יהוה אלהיהם ושב [כ= שבותם] [ק= שביתם]׃

8 שמעתי חרפת מואב וגדופי בני עמון אשר חרפו את־עמי ויגדילו על־גבולם׃

9 לכן חי־אני נאם יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל כי־מואב כסדם תהיה ובני עמון כעמרה ממשק חרול ומכרה־מלח ושממה עד־עולם שארית עמי יבזום ויתר [כ= גוי] [ק= גויי] ינחלום׃

10 זאת להם תחת גאונם כי חרפו ויגדלו על־עם יהוה צבאות׃

11 נורא יהוה עליהם כי רזה את כל־אלהי הארץ וישתחוו־לו איש ממקומו כל איי הגוים׃

12 גם־אתם כושים חללי חרבי המה׃

13 ויט ידו על־צפון ויאבד את־אשור וישם את־נינוה לשממה ציה כמדבר׃

14 ורבצו בתוכה עדרים כל־חיתו־גוי גם־קאת גם־קפד בכפתריה ילינו קול ישורר בחלון חרב בסף כי ארזה ערה׃

15 זאת* העיר העליזה היושבת לבטח האמרה בלבבה אני ואפסי עוד איך היתה לשמה מרבץ לחיה כל עובר עליה ישרק יניע ידו׃ ס

Exploring the Meaning of Zephaniah 2

In Zephaniah 2:1-3, the people Zephaniah is talking to (that includes us!), need to change their ways and trust in the Lord and His Word.

In Zephaniah 2:4-7, there's a prophecy that the cities of the Philistines will come to grief and the whole area of the Mediterranean seacoast will be populated only by shepherds and their flocks, and these shepherds will be remnants from the kingdom of Judah. Here, the Philistines represent people who do evil.

In Zephaniah 2:8-10, the peoples who live around the land of Canaan, but not in it (the Moabites and Ammonites), stand for attitudes and evils that can cause temptations to good loves and true ideas. They are compared to Sodom and Gomorrah.

In Zephaniah 2:11... In the minds of people who wish to serve the Lord, those bad attitudes and evils must be destroyed, and with the Lord's help, they can be.

In Zephaniah 2:12-15, there are references to Ethiopia, Assyria, and Ninevah. When Ethiopia is referred to in a negative sense, it refers to people who use knowledges from the Word to confirm false ideas. Similarly, Assyria means reasoning from any knowledge which in this context leads to bad conclusions. And then there's Ninevah. This city means false doctrine, and these verses tell of her fate when judgement comes. Before that its people are proud of its learning, but after the Judgement, it is abandoned and empty.

Zephaniah 2:8-10

8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.

9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.

10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.
