1 ויגשו ראשי אבות הלוים אל־אלעזר הכהן ואל־יהושע בן־נון ואל־ראשי אבות המטות לבני ישראל׃

2 וידברו אליהם בשלה בארץ כנען לאמר יהוה צוה ביד־משה לתת־לנו ערים לשבת ומגרשיהן לבהמתנו׃

3 ויתנו בני־ישראל ללוים מנחלתם אל־פי יהוה את־הערים האלה ואת־מגרשיהן׃

4 ויצא הגורל למשפחת הקהתי ויהי לבני אהרן הכהן מן־הלוים ממטה יהודה וממטה השמעני וממטה בנימן בגורל ערים שלש עשרה׃ ס

5 ולבני קהת הנותרים ממשפחת מטה־אפרים וממטה־דן ומחצי מטה מנשה בגורל ערים עשר׃ ס

6 ולבני גרשון ממשפחות מטה־יששכר וממטה־אשר וממטה נפתלי ומחצי מטה מנשה בבשן בגורל ערים שלש עשרה׃ ס

7 לבני מררי למשפחתם ממטה ראובן וממטה־גד וממטה זבולן ערים שתים עשרה׃

8 ויתנו בני־ישראל ללוים את־הערים האלה ואת־מגרשיהן כאשר צוה יהוה ביד־משה בגורל׃ ף

9 ויתנו ממטה בני יהודה וממטה בני שמעון את הערים האלה אשר־יקרא אתהן בשם׃

10 ויהי לבני אהרן ממשפחות הקהתי מבני לוי כי להם היה הגורל ריאשנה׃

11 ויתנו להם את־קרית ארבע אבי הענוק היא חברון בהר יהודה ואת־מגרשה סביבתיה׃

12 ואת־שדה העיר ואת־חצריה נתנו לכלב בן־יפנה באחזתו׃ ס

13 ולבני אהרן הכהן נתנו את־עיר מקלט הרצח את־חברון ואת־מגרשה ואת־לבנה ואת־מגרשה׃

14 ואת־יתר ואת־מגרשה ואת־אשתמע ואת־מגרשה׃

15 ואת־חלן ואת־מגרשה ואת־דבר ואת־מגרשה׃

16 ואת־עין ואת־מגרשה ואת־יטה ואת־מגרשה את־בית שמש ואת־מגרשה ערים תשע מאת שני השבטים האלה׃ ף

17 וממטה בנימן את־גבעון ואת־מגרשה את־גבע ואת־מגרשה׃

18 את־ענתות ואת־מגרשה ואת־עלמון ואת־מגרשה ערים ארבע׃

19 כל־ערי בני־אהרן הכהנים שלש־עשרה ערים ומגרשיהן׃ ס

20 ולמשפחות בני־קהת הלוים הנותרים מבני קהת ויהי ערי גורלם ממטה אפרים׃

21 ויתנו להם את־עיר מקלט הרצח את־שכם ואת־מגרשה בהר אפרים ואת־גזר ואת־מגרשה׃

22 ואת־קבצים ואת־מגרשה ואת־בית חורן ואת־מגרשה ערים ארבע׃ ס

23 וממטה־דן את־אלתקא ואת־מגרשה את־גבתון ואת־מגרשה׃

24 את־אילון ואת־מגרשה את־גת־רמון ואת־מגרשה ערים ארבע׃ ס

25 וממחצית מטה מנשה את־תענך ואת־מגרשה ואת־גת־רמון ואת־מגרשה ערים שתים׃

26 כל־ערים עשר ומגרשיהן למשפחות בני־קהת הנותרים׃ ס

27 ולבני גרשון ממשפחת הלוים מחצי מטה מנשה את־עיר מקלט הרצח את־[כ= גלון] [ק= גולן] בבשן ואת־מגרשה ואת־בעשתרה ואת־מגרשה ערים שתים׃ ס

28 וממטה יששכר את־קשיון ואת־מגרשה את־דברת ואת־מגרשה׃

29 את־ירמות ואת־מגרשה את־עין גנים ואת־מגרשה ערים ארבע׃ ס

30 וממטה אשר את־משאל ואת־מגרשה את־עבדון ואת־מגרשה׃

31 את־חלקת ואת־מגרשה ואת־רחב ואת־מגרשה ערים ארבע׃ ס

32 וממטה נפתלי את־עיר מקלט הרצח את־קדש בגליל ואת־מגרשה ואת־חמת דאר ואת־מגרשה ואת־קרתן ואת־מגרשה ערים שלש׃

33 כל־ערי הגרשני למשפחתם שלש־עשרה עיר ומגרשיהן׃ ס

34 ולמשפחות בני־מררי הלוים הנותרים מאת מטה זבולן את־יקנעם ואת־מגרשה את־קרתה ואת־מגרשה׃

35 את־דמנה ואת־מגרשה את־נהלל ואת־מגרשה ערים ארבע׃

36 וממטה ראובן את־בצר ואת־מגרשה ואת־יהצה ואת־מגרשה׃

37 את־קדמות ואת־מגרשה ואת־מיפעת ואת־מגרשה ערים ארבע׃ ס

38 וממטה־גד את־עיר מקלט הרצח את־רמת בגלעד ואת־מגרשה ואת־מחנים ואת־מגרשה׃

39 את־חשבון ואת־מגרשה את־יעזר ואת־מגרשה כל־ערים ארבע׃

40 כל־הערים לבני מררי למשפחתם הנותרים ממשפחות הלוים ויהי גורלם ערים שתים עשרה׃

41 כל ערי הלוים בתוך אחזת בני־ישראל ערים ארבעים ושמנה ומגרשיהן׃

42 תהיינה הערים האלה עיר עיר ומגרשיה סביבתיה כן לכל־הערים האלה׃ ס

43 ויתן יהוה לישראל את־כל־הארץ אשר נשבע לתת לאבותם וירשוה וישבו בה׃

44 וינח יהוה להם מסביב ככל אשר־נשבע לאבותם ולא־עמד איש בפניהם מכל־איביהם את כל־איביהם נתן יהוה בידם׃

45 לא־נפל דבר מכל הדבר הטוב אשר־דבר יהוה אל־בית ישראל הכל בא׃ ף

2909. 'In Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron in the land of Canaan' means within the Church. This becomes clear from the meaning of 'Kiriath Arba' as the Church as regards truth, and from the meaning of 'Hebron in the land of Canaan' as the Church as regards good. In the Word, especially the prophetical part, whenever truth is the subject, good also is included, on account of the heavenly marriage that exists in every detail of the Word, see 683, 793, 801, 2173, 2516, 2712. Here therefore when Kiriath Arba is mentioned, so also is 'Hebron in the land of Canaan'. The land of Canaan is the Lord's kingdom, 1413, 1437, 1607, and locations in that land were in varying ways representative, 1585, 1866.

[2] As regards 'Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron', this was a region where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob dwelt. Abraham's dwelling there is evident from what has gone before,

Abraham came and dwelt in [the oak-groves of] Mamre, which are in Hebron. Genesis 13:18.

And Isaac and Jacob's dwelling there too is evident from what comes further on, Jacob came to Isaac his father in Mamre, to Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. Genesis 35:27.

Joseph was sent by Jacob his father to his brothers, from the Valley of Hebron. Genesis 37:14.

From the representation dealt with already of those three personages it is clear that 'Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron' represented the Church before Jerusalem did so.

[3] In the course of time every Church deteriorates until it ceases to possess any faith or charity at all, at which point it is destroyed. This too was represented by 'Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron', that is to say, when this place was occupied by the Anakim, by whom dreadful false persuasions were meant, 581, 1673, regarding which occupation by the Anakim, see Numbers 13:21-22; Joshua 11:21; 14:15; 15:13-14; Judges 1:10. As regards the end or close of the Church and its destruction, this was represented by Joshua's utterly destroying everything in that place, Joshua 10:36-37; 11:21, and by Judah and Caleb's smiting the Anakim, Judges 1:10; Joshua 14:13-15; 15:13-14. The establishment again of a new Church was represented by the allotment of its fields and villages to Caleb as his inheritance, Joshua 21:12. The city itself however became a city of refuge, Joshua 20:7; 21:13, and a city for priests, for the sons of Aaron, Joshua 21:10-11, within the inheritance of Judah, Joshua 15:54.

[4] From this it is evident that Hebron represented the Lord's spiritual Church in the land of Canaan. For the same reason also David was ordered by Jehovah's command to go to Hebron and was there anointed king over the house of Judah; and after he had reigned there for seven years and six months he went to Jerusalem and took possession of Zion, see 2 Samuel 2:1-11; 5:5; 1 Kings 2:11, at which point the Lord's spiritual Church now began to be represented by Jerusalem, and His celestial Church by Zion.
