Shmuel A 31

Studie

   

1 ופלשתים נלחמים בישראל וינסו אנשי ישראל מפני פלשתים ויפלו חללים בהר הגלבע׃

2 וידבקו פלשתים את־שאול ואת־בניו ויכו פלשתים את־יהונתן ואת־אבינדב ואת־מלכי־שוע בני שאול׃

3 ותכבד המלחמה אל־שאול וימצאהו המורים אנשים בקשת ויחל מאד מהמורים׃

4 ויאמר שאול לנשא כליו שלף חרבך ודקרני בה פן־יבואו הערלים האלה ודקרני והתעללו־בי ולא אבה נשא כליו כי ירא מאד ויקח שאול את־החרב ויפל עליה׃

5 וירא נשא־כליו כי מת שאול ויפל גם־הוא על־חרבו וימת עמו׃

6 וימת שאול ושלשת בניו ונשא כליו גם כל־אנשיו ביום ההוא יחדו׃

7 ויראו אנשי־ישראל אשר־בעבר העמק ואשר בעבר הירדן כי־נסו אנשי ישראל וכי־מתו שאול ובניו ויעזבו את־הערים וינסו ויבאו פלשתים וישבו בהן׃ ס

8 ויהי ממחרת ויבאו פלשתים לפשט את־החללים וימצאו את־שאול ואת־שלשת בניו נפלים בהר הגלבע׃

9 ויכרתו את־ראשו ויפשיטו את־כליו וישלחו בארץ־פלשתים סביב לבשר בית עצביהם ואת־העם׃

10 וישמו את־כליו בית עשתרות ואת־גויתו תקעו בחומת בית שן׃

11 וישמעו אליו ישבי יביש גלעד את אשר־עשו פלשתים לשאול׃

12 ויקומו כל־איש חיל וילכו כל־הלילה ויקחו את־גוית שאול ואת גוית בניו מחומת בית שן ויבאו יבשה וישרפו אתם שם׃

13 ויקחו את־עצמתיהם ויקברו תחת־האשל ביבשה ויצמו שבעת ימים׃ ף

Child-bearing being what it is, the spiritual meaning of "bearing" in that context seems to be particularly important, and sheds some light on other uses. Children represent new spiritual ideas or new affections for spiritual things; the Writings say "bearing" a child means "acknowledging" that idea or affection "in action as well as in faith." So it's not just thinking about a new idea or feeling good about something, it's actually going out and doing something about it, to make it real.In a general sense, other uses of "bear" also indicate an active and supportive approach to spiritual things, with actual works being done in pursuit of spiritual issues of various sorts.Like many verbs, the spiritual meaning of "bearing" something depends greatly on context – what it is that's being borne, and why. It is further complicated by the fact that "bearing" in the literal sense can mean anything from putting up with an annoyance to the miracle of pregnancy and birth.
