Studie

   

1 Du sollst auch einen Räuchaltar machen, zu räuchern, von Akazienholz,

2 eine Elle lang und breit, gleich viereckig und zwei Ellen hoch, mit seinen Hörnern.

3 Und sollst ihn mit feinem Golde überziehen, sein Dach und seine Wände ringsumher und seine Hörner. Und sollst einen Kranz von Gold machen

4 und zwei goldene Ringe unter dem Kranz zu beiden Seiten, daß man Stangen darein tue und ihn damit trage.

5 Die Stangen sollst du auch von Akazienholz machen und mit Gold überziehen.

6 Und sollst ihn setzen vor den Vorhang, der vor der Lade des Zeugnisses hängt, und vor dem Gnadenstuhl, der auf dem Zeugnis ist, wo ich mich dir bezeugen werde.

7 Und Aaron soll darauf räuchern gutes Räuchwerk alle Morgen, wenn er die Lampen zurichtet.

8 Desgleichen, wenn er die Lampen anzündet gegen Abend, soll er solch Räuchwerk auch räuchern. Das soll das tägliche Räuchopfer sein vor dem HERRN bei euren Nachkommen.

9 Ihr sollt kein fremdes Räuchwerk darauf tun, auch kein Brandopfer noch Speisopfer und kein Trankopfer darauf opfern.

10 Und Aaron soll auf seinen Hörnern versöhnen einmal im Jahr mit dem Blut des Sündopfers zur Versöhnung. Solche Versöhnung soll jährlich einmal geschehen bei euren Nachkommen; denn das ist dem HERRN ein Hochheiliges.

11 Und der HERR redete mit Mose und sprach:

12 Wenn du die Häupter der Kinder Israel zählst, so soll ein jeglicher dem HERRN geben die Versöhnung seiner Seele, auf daß ihnen nicht eine Plage widerfahre, wenn sie gezählt werden.

13 Es soll aber ein jeglicher, der in der Zahl ist, einen halben Silberling geben nach dem Lot des Heiligtums (ein Lot hat zwanzig Gera). Solcher halber Silberling soll das Hebopfer des HERRN sein.

14 Wer in der Zahl ist von zwanzig Jahren und darüber, der soll solch Hebopfer dem HERRN geben.

15 Der Reiche soll nicht mehr geben und der Arme nicht weniger als den halben Silberling, den man dem HERRN zur Hebe gibt für die Versöhnung ihre Seelen.

16 Und du sollst solch Geld der Versöhnung nehmen von den Kindern Israel und zum Gottesdienst der Hütte des Stifts geben, daß es sei den Kindern Israel ein Gedächtnis vor dem HERRN, daß er sich Über ihre Seelen versöhnen lasse.

17 Und der HERR redete mit Mose und sprach:

18 Du sollst auch ein ehernes Handfaß machen mit einem ehernen Fuß, zum Waschen, und sollst es setzen zwischen die Hütte des Stifts und den Altar, und Wasser darein tun,

19 daß Aaron und seine Söhne ihre Hände und Füße darin waschen,

20 wenn sie in die Hütte des Stifts gehen oder zum Altar, daß sie dienen, ein Feuer anzuzünden dem HERRN,

21 auf daß sie nicht sterben. Das soll eine ewige Weise sein ihm und seinem Samen bei ihren Nachkommen.

22 Und der HERR redete mit Mose und sprach:

23 Nimm zu dir die beste Spezerei: die edelste Myrrhe, fünfhundert Lot, und Zimt, die Hälfte soviel, zweihundertfünfzig, und Kalmus, auch zweihundertfünfzig,

24 und Kassia, fünfhundert, nach dem Lot des Heiligtums, und Öl vom Ölbaum ein Hin.

25 Und mache ein heiliges Salböl nach der Kunst des Salbenbereiters.

26 Und sollst damit salben die Hütte des Stifts und die Lade des Zeugnisses,

27 den Tisch mit allem seinem Geräte, den Leuchter mit seinem Geräte, den Räucheraltar,

28 den Brandopferaltar mit allem seinem Geräte und das Handfaß mit seinem Fuß.

29 Und sollst sie also weihen, daß sie hochheilig seien; denn wer sie anrühren will, der ist dem Heiligtum verfallen.

30 Aaron und seine Söhne sollst du auch salben und sie mir zu Priestern weihen.

31 Und sollst mit den Kindern Israel reden und sprechen: Dies Öl soll mir eine heilige Salbe sein bei euren Nachkommen.

32 Auf Menschenleib soll's nicht gegossen werden, sollst auch seinesgleichen nicht machen; denn es ist heilig, darum soll's euch heilig sein.

33 Wer ein solches macht oder einem andern davon gibt, der soll von seinem Volk ausgerottet werden.

34 Und der HERR sprach zu Mose: Nimm dir Spezerei; Balsam, Stakte, Galban und reinen Weihrauch, von einem so viel wie vom andern,

35 und mache Räuchwerk daraus, nach der Kunst des Salbenbereiters gemengt, daß es rein und heilig sei.

36 Und du sollst es zu Pulver stoßen und sollst davon tun vor das Zeugnis in der Hütte des Stifts, wo ich mich dir bezeugen werde. Das soll euch ein Hochheiliges sein.

37 Und desgleichen Räuchwerk sollt ihr euch nicht machen, sondern es soll dir heilig sein dem HERRN.

38 Wer ein solches machen wird, der wird ausgerottet werden von seinem Volk.

10252. 'The best myrrh' means the perception of truth on the level of the senses. This is clear from the meaning of 'odour-bearing myrrh' as the perception of truth on the level of the senses; for its 'odour' means perception, as immediately above, and 'myrrh' truth on the level of the senses. The subject in the verses that come now is the anointing oil, by which celestial good, which is the Divine Good of the Lord's Divine Love in the inmost heaven, is meant. The nature of that good is described by the fragrant substances from which it was made. These were the best myrrh, sweet-smelling cinnamon, sweet-smelling calamus, cassia, and olive oil, which mean celestial truths and forms of good in their proper order, that is to say, ranging from those which are last and lowest in order to those which are first, or from those which are outermost to those which are inmost, the last or outermost being meant by 'myrrh'. The reason why celestial good, or the good of the inmost heaven, is described in this manner is that the truths meant by those spices are the means by which such good comes into being and is also kept in being.

[2] But since this matter demands to be investigated more deeply, the whole nature of it must be explained more fully. In order that the birth of celestial good, which is inmost good, may take place in a person, which is accomplished through being regenerated by the Lord, truths must be acquired from the Word, or from the teachings of the Church which are drawn from the Word. These truths first find 1 their seat in the memory within the natural or external man. From there they are summoned by the Lord into the internal man, which happens when the person leads a life in keeping with them. And so far as the person has an affection for them, that is, loves them, they are raised by the Lord to an even higher or more internal level, where they are transformed into celestial good.

[3] Celestial good is the good of the love which desires to put truths from the Word into practice for the sake of good, thus for the Lord's sake since the Lord is the source of good and therefore is such good. This is how that good comes to be born, from which it is evident that such good is brought into being by means of truths from the Word, first by their presence on the most external level in a person, which is that of the senses, then by their being raised to an internal level, and finally to the inmost one itself, where those truths are transformed into celestial good. And since that good is brought into being in this way by means of truths in their own order, so subsequently is it kept in being in similar order by means of those very truths; for continuance in being is a perpetual coming into being. When good is kept in being in that manner, the same as it had been brought into being, it is complete. For now higher things descending in order have lower ones to depend on as an infrastructure for their continued existence, for a resting-place, and for a plane of support.

[4] And they have outermost or last and lowest ones, which are truths present within knowledge on the level of the senses, as a foundation. These truths are described in John, in the Book of Revelation, by the precious stones forming the foundations of the wall of the Holy Jerusalem coming down out of heaven, Revelation 21:19-20. By 'precious stones' God's truths received within good are meant, see 9476, 9863, 9873, 9905.

The fact that 'odour-bearing myrrh' means truth on the level of the senses is also clear in David,

You have loved righteousness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions. With myrrh, aloes, and kessia 2 [He has anointed] all Your garments. Psalms 45:7-8.

These words refer to the Lord, who alone is Jehovah's Anointed, because the Divine Good of Divine Love, meant by 'anointing oil', was within Him, 9954. By 'His garments', which are said to have been anointed with myrrh, aloes, and kessia, Divine Truths springing from His Divine Good, present in the natural degree, are meant, 5954, 9212, 9216, 9814, so that 'myrrh' means Divine Truth on the level of the senses since it is mentioned first.

[5] In Matthew,

Opening their treasures the wise men from the east offered gifts to the new-born Lord - gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11.

'Gold' here means good, 'frankincense' internal truth, and 'myrrh' external truth; both kinds of truth spring from good. In this instance 'gold' is the first to be mentioned because it means good, which is inmost; 'frankincense' is the second because it means internal truth springing from good; and 'myrrh' is the third or last to be mentioned because it means external truth springing from good. For the meaning of 'gold' as good, see in the places referred to in 9874, 9881; and for that of 'frankincense' as internal truth springing from good, see below at verse 34 of the present chapter.

[6] The wise men from the east offered those gifts to the Lord born at that time to indicate His Divinity within His Humanity; for having a knowledge of correspondences and representations they knew what gold, frankincense, and myrrh each served to mean. That knowledge was the chief kind that existed in those times among Arabs, Ethiopians, and others in the east, which also explains why in the Word those who possess cognitions or knowledge of heavenly things are meant in the internal sense by Arabia, Ethiopia, and 'the sons of the east', 1171, 3240, 3242, 3762. But such knowledge during that time perished, for when the good of life passed away the knowledge was turned into magic. First it was erased among the Israelite nation, and subsequently among all the rest. At the present day it has been erased to such an extent that people do not even know of its existence; indeed it is so completely absent from the Christian world that if anyone tells them that all things in the literal sense of the Word serve by virtue of their correspondence to mean heavenly realities, and that these constitute its internal sense, they do not know what to make of it.

[7] Because myrrh served to mean the most external truth, which is truth on the level of the senses, and perception of that truth, the bodies of those who had died were anointed in former times with myrrh and aloes. That anointing served to mean the preservation of all of a person's truths and forms of good, and also to mean resurrection. Therefore also such [spices] were used as served to mean the last and lowest level of a person's life, called the life of the senses. The Lord's body was anointed with such, and together with them was wrapped in a linen cloth; and this was the custom among the Jews, see John 19:39-40, and also Luke 23:55-56. But it should be remembered that things said in the Word about the Lord Himself are to be understood in a pre-eminent sense. Consequently the spices mentioned in those verses mean His Divine life on the level of the senses, which is the life proper to the body, and also the resurrection of this with Him. As is well known, unlike anyone else the Lord rose again with the whole body He had in the world, for He left nothing in the tomb. Therefore also, when the disciples beheld the Lord and thought that they were seeing a spirit, He said to them,

Why are you troubled? See My hands and My feet; handle Me, see; for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see Me have. Luke 24:38-39.

1551. That 'silver' means truths is clear from the meaning of 'silver' as truth. The most ancient people compared the goods and truths present in man to metals. Innermost or celestial goods which flow from love to the Lord they compared to gold, truths deriving from these to silver. Goods of a lower or natural kind however they compared to bronze, and truths of a lower kind to iron. Nor did they just compare them; they also called them such. This was the origin of periods of time being likened to those same metals and being called the golden, silver, bronze, and iron ages, for these followed in that order one after another. The golden age was the time of the Most Ancient Church, which was celestial man. The silver age was the time of the Ancient Church, which was spiritual man. The bronze age was the time of the Church that followed, and the iron age came after that. Similar things were also meant by the statue which Nebuchadnezzar saw in a dream, whose head was of fine gold, breast and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, and shins of iron, Daniel 2:32-33. That periods of the Church were to follow one another in that order, and actually did so, is clear in that very chapter of the same prophet.

[2] That 'silver' in the internal sense of the Word wherever it is mentioned means truth, or in the contrary sense falsity, is clear from the following places: In Isaiah,

Instead of bronze I will bring gold, and instead of iron I will bring silver, and instead of wood, bronze, and instead of stones, iron. And I will make peace your assessment, and righteousness your tax-collectors. Isaiah 60:17.

Here it is evident what each metal means. The subject is the Lord's Coming, His kingdom, and the celestial Church. 'Instead of bronze, gold' is celestial good in place of natural good; 'instead of iron, silver' is spiritual truth in place of natural truth; 'instead of wood, bronze' is natural good in place of bodily good; 'instead of stone, iron' is natural truth in place of truth acquired through the senses. In the same prophet,

Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the water, and he who has no money, 1 come, buy and eat! Isaiah 55:1.

'He who has no money' 1 is the person who does not know the truth but who nevertheless possesses the good that stems from charity, as is the case with many people inside the Church, and with gentiles outside it.

[3] In the same prophet,

The islands will wait for Me, the ships of Tarshish at their head, to bring your sons from afar, their silver and their gold with them, to the name of Jehovah your God, and to the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 60:9.

This refers specifically to a new Church, or a Church among gentiles, and in general to the Lord's kingdom. 'Ships from Tarshish' stands for cognitions, 'silver' for truths, and 'gold' for goods, which are those things they 'will bring to the name of Jehovah'. In Ezekiel,

For your adornment you took vessels made of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and you made for yourselves figures of the male. Ezekiel 16:17.

Here 'gold' stands for cognitions of celestial things, 'silver' of spiritual things. In the same prophet,

You were adorned with gold and silver, and your raiment was fine linen and silk, and embroidered cloth. Ezekiel 16:13.

This refers to Jerusalem, by which the Lord's Church is meant, whose adornment is being described in this manner. In the same prophet,

Behold, you who are wise, there is no secret they have hidden from you; by your wisdom and by your intelligence you have acquired riches for yourself, and you have acquired gold and silver in your treasuries. Ezekiel 28:3-4.

Here, in what is said in reference to Tyre, 'gold' is plainly identified with the riches of wisdom, and 'silver' with the riches of intelligence.

[4] In Joel,

You have taken My silver and My gold, and My good and desirable treasures you have carried into your temples. Joel 3:5.

This refers to Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia, which mean cognitions, and these are 'the silver and the gold they took into their temples'. In Haggai,

The elect of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory. Mine is the silver, and Mine is the gold. The glory of this latter house will be greater than that of the former. Haggai 2:7-9.

This refers to the Lord's Church to which 'gold and silver' have reference. In Malachi,

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi. Malachi 3:3.

This refers to the Coming of the Lord. In David,

The words of Jehovah are pure words, silver refined in an earthen crucible, poured seven times. Psalms 12:6.

'Silver purified seven times' stands for Divine truth. At the time of their exodus out of Egypt the children of Israel were commanded that every woman should ask of her neighbour, and of her who sojourned in her house, vessels of silver and vessels of gold and garments, and that they should put them on their sons and on their daughters, and so despoil the Egyptians, Exodus 3:22; 11:2-3; 12:35-36. Anyone may see from this that the children of Israel would never have been ordered to steal and despoil the Egyptians of those possessions in that way if these did not represent some arcana. But what those arcana are may become clear from the meaning of 'silver and gold, garments, and Egypt', and from the fact that what these possessions represented is similar to the words here 'rich in the silver and gold from Egypt', used in reference to Abram.

[5] Just as 'silver' means truth so in a contrary sense it means falsity, for people under the influence of falsity imagine falsity to be the truth, as is also clear in the Prophets. In Moses,

You shall not covet the silver and the gold of the nations, nor take it for yourself, lest you be ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to Jehovah your God. You shall utterly detest it. Deuteronomy 7:25-26.

'The gold of the nations' stands for evils, and 'their silver' for falsities. In the same author,

You shall not make gods of silver to be with Me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold. Exodus 20:23.

In the internal sense these words mean nothing other than falsities and evil desires, falsities being meant by 'gods of silver', and evil desires by 'gods of gold'. In Isaiah,

On that day everyone will spurn his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your hands have made for you - a sin. Isaiah 31:7.

'Idols of silver and idols of gold' stands for similar things that are false and evil 'Which your hands have made' stands for what is a product of the proprium. In Jeremiah,

They are foolish and stupid; that wood is a way of learning vanities! Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the smith and of the hands of the moulder. Their clothing is violet and purple These are all the work of the wise. Jeremiah 10:8-9.

Here 'silver' and 'gold' quite clearly stand for similar things that are false and evil.
