1 Und Jehova redete zu Mose und sprach:

2 Heilige mir alles Erstgeborene, was irgend die Mutter bricht unter den Kindern Israel, an Menschen und an Vieh; es ist mein. -

3 Und Mose sprach zu dem Volke: Gedenket dieses Tages, an welchem ihr aus Ägypten gezogen seid, aus dem Hause der Knechtschaft; (W. der Knechte) denn mit starker Hand hat Jehova euch von hier herausgeführt; und es soll nichts Gesäuertes gegessen werden.

4 Heute ziehet ihr aus, im Monat Abib. (Ährenmonat; vergleiche Kap. 12,2)

5 Und es soll geschehen, wenn Jehova dich bringt in das Land der Kanaaniter und der Hethiter und der Amoriter und der Hewiter und der Jebusiter, das er deinen Vätern geschworen hat, dir zu geben, ein Land, das von Milch und Honig fließt, so sollst du diesen Dienst in diesem Monat halten.

6 Sieben Tage sollst du Ungesäuertes essen, und am siebten Tage ist ein Fest dem Jehova.

7 Die sieben Tage soll Ungesäuertes gegessen werden; und nicht soll Gesäuertes bei dir gesehen werden, noch soll Sauerteig bei dir gesehen werden in allen deinen Grenzen.

8 Und du sollst deinem Sohne an selbigem Tage kundtun und sprechen: Es ist um deswillen, was Jehova mir getan hat, als ich aus Ägypten zog.

9 Und es sei dir zu einem Zeichen an deiner Hand und zu einem Denkzeichen zwischen deinen Augen, damit das Gesetz Jehovas in deinem Munde sei; denn mit starker Hand hat Jehova dich aus Ägypten herausgeführt.

10 Und du sollst diese Satzung beobachten zu ihrer bestimmten Zeit, von Jahr zu Jahr.

11 Und es soll geschehen, wenn Jehova dich in das Land der Kanaaniter bringt, wie er dir und deinen Vätern geschworen hat, und es dir gibt,

12 so sollst du Jehova alles darbringen, was die Mutter bricht; und alles zuerst Geworfene vom Vieh, das dir zuteil wird, die Männlichen gehören Jehova.

13 Und jedes Erstgeborene des Esels sollst du mit einem Lamme (S. die Anm. zu Kap. 12,3) lösen, und wenn du es nicht lösest, so brich ihm das Genick; und jedes Erstgeborene des Menschen unter deinen Söhnen sollst du lösen.

14 Und es soll geschehen, wenn dein Sohn dich künftig fragt und spricht: Was ist das? so sollst du zu ihm sagen: Mit starker Hand hat Jehova uns aus Ägypten herausgeführt, aus dem Hause der Knechtschaft.

15 Und es geschah, da der Pharao sich hartnäckig weigerte, uns ziehen zu lassen, tötete Jehova alle Erstgeburt im Lande Ägypten, vom Erstgeborenen des Menschen bis zum Erstgeborenen des Viehes; darum opfere ich dem Jehova alles, was die Mutter bricht, die Männlichen, und jeden Erstgeborenen meiner Söhne löse ich.

16 Und es sei zu einem Zeichen an deiner Hand und zu Stirnbändern zwischen deinen Augen; denn mit starker Hand hat Jehova uns aus Ägypten herausgeführt.

17 Und es geschah, als der Pharao das Volk ziehen ließ, da führte Gott sie nicht den Weg durch das Land der Philister, wiewohl er nahe war; denn Gott sprach: Damit es das Volk nicht gereue, wenn sie den Streit sehen, und sie nicht nach Ägypten zurückkehren.

18 Und Gott führte das Volk herum, den Weg der Wüste des Schilfmeeres; und die Kinder Israel zogen gerüstet aus dem Lande Ägypten herauf.

19 Und Mose nahm die Gebeine Josephs mit sich; denn er hatte die Kinder Israel ausdrücklich schwören lassen und gesagt: Gott wird euch gewißlich heimsuchen; so führet denn meine Gebeine mit euch von hier hinauf!

20 Und sie brachen auf von Sukkoth und lagerten sich in Etham, am ande der Wüste.

21 Und Jehova zog vor ihnen her, des Tages in einer Wolkensäule, um sie auf dem Wege zu leiten, und des Nachts in einer Feuersäule, um ihnen zu leuchten, damit sie Tag und Nacht ziehen könnten. (O. so daß sie… ziehen konnten)

22 Des Tages wich nicht die Wolkensäule noch des Nachts die Feuersäule vor dem Volke.

8099. 'The Sea Suph' means the damnation which they first had to pass through. This is clear from the meaning of 'the Sea Suph' as the hell where those spirits are who are governed by faith separated from charity and lead a life of evil; and since 'the Sea Suph' means hell it also means damnation. The reason why they first had to pass through damnation is this: There were people belonging to the spiritual Church who were held back on the lower earth until the Lord's Coming, where they were molested by those governed by faith separated from charity. These have been the subject in the preceding chapters. When those people were delivered from that place they were not raised to heaven immediately. Before this they were led into a second state - a state of purification, which is a state of temptations. For truths and forms of the good of faith can be neither firmly accepted nor bonded together without temptations; and until these had been firmly accepted and bonded together those people could not be raised into heaven. These things were represented by the children of Israel, by their not being led straightaway into the land of Canaan but living first in the wilderness, where they remained for forty years, undergoing various temptations, which are described in the books of Moses.

[2] In regard to this matter, that they first passed through the Sea Suph, which means the hell of those who are governed by separated faith and lead an evil life, thus that they first passed through the middle of damnation, it should be recognized that this hell is situated deep down out in front beneath the adulterers' hells, stretching rather widely towards the left. It is separated from the adulterers' hells by waters like those of the sea on the right there, but higher up, is the place where those governed by the truth of faith but not by the good of faith are gathered - those meant by 'the Philistines', who are referred to just above in 8096. But the lower earth, the region where those who suffer molestation are, is beneath the soles of the feet, slightly out in front. Those who are delivered from molestation are not led towards the right since the ones meant by the Philistines are there. Instead they are led towards the left, through the midst of the hell that has been mentioned and they come out on the left, where there is a kind of wilderness. I have been allowed on two occasions to see that this is the way which they pass through when rescued from molestations. As they pass through they are protected by the Lord in such a way that nothing bad at all can touch them, let alone any damnation. For they are encompassed by a pillar of angels with whom the Lord is present.

[3] This is represented by the passage of the children of Israel through the Sea Suph. Such was also meant by the following in Isaiah,

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Jehovah. Were You not that which dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, which made the deep places of the sea a road, in order that the redeemed might pass through? Isaiah 51:9-10.

'The arm of Jehovah' is the Lord's Divine Human. 'The waters of the great deep' and 'the depths of the sea' are the hell in which those live who are governed by faith separated from charity and lead a life of evil. The waters like those of the sea beneath which they live are falsities; for in the next life falsities appear as thick, dark clouds, and also as deluges of water, 739, 4423, 7307. The redeemed who were to pass through them are those whom the Lord has delivered.

[4] In the same prophet,

Jehovah remembered the days of old, Moses, [and] His people, [saying,] Where is He who caused them to come up out of the sea with the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put the spirit of His holiness in the midst of them? Isaiah 63:11.

In this prophetic utterance 'Moses' is used to mean the Lord, who is also 'the shepherd of the flock'. 'The people whom He caused to come up out of the sea' are those who were delivered from damnation. In Jeremiah,

At the noise of their fall the earth shook; [as for their] cry, the noise of it was heard in the Sea Suph. Jeremiah 49:21.

'The Sea Suph' stands for hell, for Edom and its damnation is the subject there. It says that the noise of it was heard coming out of the Sea Suph, when yet they were not the ones who were drowned in that sea but the Egyptians. From this it is evident that 'the Sea Suph' means hell and damnation 'Edom' there means those who are led by the evil of self-love to reject the truths taught by doctrine and to embrace falsities, 3322.

From all this one may now see what is meant in the representative internal sense by 'the sea Suph', and what is meant by the passage through it of the children of Israel and the drowning in it of the Egyptians, events described in the next chapter.

1 Yahweh said to Moses, "Behold, I have made you as God to Pharaoh; and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.

2 You shall speak all that I command you; and Aaron your brother shall speak to Pharaoh, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.

3 I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.

4 But Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will lay my hand on Egypt, and bring forth my armies, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

5 The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh, when I stretch forth my hand on Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them."

6 Moses and Aaron did so. As Yahweh commanded them, so they did.

7 Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

8 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

9 "When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, 'Perform a miracle!' then you shall tell Aaron, 'Take your rod, and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it become a serpent.'"

10 Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, as Yahweh had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

11 Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers. They also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same thing with their enchantments.

12 For they each cast down their rods, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.

13 Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he didn't listen to them; as Yahweh had spoken.

14 Yahweh said to Moses, "Pharaoh's heart is stubborn. He refuses to let the people go.

15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning. Behold, he goes out to the water; and you shall stand by the river's bank to meet him; and the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand.

16 You shall tell him, 'Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, "Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness:" and behold, until now you haven't listened.

17 Thus says Yahweh, "In this you shall know that I am Yahweh. Behold, I will strike with the rod that is in my hand on the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.

18 The fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall become foul; and the Egyptians shall loathe to drink water from the river."'"

19 Yahweh said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Take your rod, and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their streams, and over their pools, and over all their ponds of water, that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.'"

20 Moses and Aaron did so, as Yahweh commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.

21 The fish that were in the river died; and the river became foul, and the Egyptians couldn't drink water from the river; and the blood was throughout all the land of Egypt.

22 The magicians of Egypt did the same thing with their enchantments; and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he didn't listen to them; as Yahweh had spoken.

23 Pharaoh turned and went into his house, neither did he lay even this to heart.

24 All the Egyptians dug around the river for water to drink; for they couldn't drink of the water of the river.

25 Seven days were fulfilled, after Yahweh had struck the river.
