1 Balaam vit que l'Eternel trouvait bon de bénir Israël, et il n'alla point comme les autres fois, à la rencontre des enchantements; mais il tourna son visage du côté du désert.

2 Balaam leva les yeux, et vit Israël campé selon ses tribus. Alors l'esprit de Dieu fut sur lui.

3 Balaam prononça son oracle, et dit: Parole de Balaam, fils de Beor, Parole de l'homme qui a l'oeil ouvert,

4 Parole de celui qui entend les paroles de Dieu, De celui qui voit la vision du Tout-Puissant, De celui qui se prosterne et dont les yeux s'ouvrent.

5 Qu'elles sont belles, tes tentes, ô Jacob! Tes demeures, ô Israël!

6 Elles s'étendent comme des vallées, Comme des jardins près d'un fleuve, Comme des aloès que l'Eternel a plantés, Comme des cèdres le long des eaux.

7 L'eau coule de ses seaux, Et sa semence est fécondée par d'abondantes eaux. Son roi s'élève au-dessus d'Agag, Et son royaume devient puissant.

8 Dieu l'a fait sortir d'Egypte, Il est pour lui comme la vigueur du buffle. Il dévore les nations qui s'élèvent contre lui, Il brise leurs os, et les abat de ses flèches.

9 Il ploie les genoux, il se couche comme un lion, comme une lionne: Qui le fera lever? Béni soit quiconque te bénira, Et maudit soit quiconque te maudira!

10 La colère de Balak s'enflamma contre Balaam; il frappa des mains, et dit à Balaam: C'est pour maudire mes ennemis que je t'ai appelé, et voici, tu les as bénis déjà trois fois.

11 Fuis maintenant, va-t'en chez toi! J'avais dit que je te rendrais des honneurs, mais l'Eternel t'empêche de les recevoir.

12 Balaam répondit à Balak: Eh! n'ai-je pas dit aux messagers que tu m'as envoyés:

13 Quand Balak me donnerait sa maison pleine d'argent et d'or, je ne pourrais faire de moi-même ni bien ni mal contre l'ordre de l'Eternel; je répéterai ce que dira l'Eternel?

14 Et maintenant voici, je m'en vais vers mon peuple. Viens, je t'annoncerai ce que ce peuple fera à ton peuple dans la suite des temps.

15 Balaam prononça son oracle, et dit: Parole de Balaam, fils de Beor, Parole de l'homme qui a l'oeil ouvert,

16 Parole de celui qui entend les paroles de Dieu, De celui qui connaît les desseins du Très-Haut, De celui qui voit la vision du Tout-Puissant, De celui qui se prosterne et dont les yeux s'ouvrent.

17 Je le vois, mais non maintenant, Je le contemple, mais non de près. Un astre sort de Jacob, Un sceptre s'élève d'Israël. Il perce les flancs de Moab, Et il abat tous les enfants de Seth.

18 Il se rend maître d'Edom, Il se rend maître de Séir, ses ennemis. Israël manifeste sa force.

19 Celui qui sort de Jacob règne en souverain, Il fait périr ceux qui s'échappent des villes.

20 Balaam vit Amalek. Il prononça son oracle, et dit: Amalek est la première des nations, Mais un jour il sera détruit.

21 Balaam vit les Kéniens. Il prononça son oracle, et dit: Ta demeure est solide, Et ton nid posé sur le roc.

22 Mais le Kénien sera chassé, Quand l'Assyrien t'emmènera captif.

23 Balaam prononça son oracle, et dit: Hélas! qui vivra après que Dieu l'aura établi?

24 Mais des navires viendront de Kittim, Ils humilieront l'Assyrien, ils humilieront l'Hébreu; Et lui aussi sera détruit.

25 Balaam se leva, partit, et retourna chez lui. Balak s'en alla aussi de son côté.

515. Verses 10, 11. And the third angel sounded, and there fell from heaven a great star burning as a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of the waters. And the name of the star is called Wormwood; and the third part of the waters became wormwood, and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter.

10. "And the third angel sounded," signifies influx out of heaven, and the consequent third change with the evil (n. 516); "and there fell from heaven a great star burning as a lamp," signifies the truth of the Word falsified by self-love n. 517; "and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of the waters," signifies that consequently all the understanding of truth perished, and thereby the doctrine of the church n. 518.

11. "And the name of the star is called Wormwood," signifies truth mixed with the falsity of evil n. 519; "and the third part [of the waters] became wormwood," signifies that every truth became such in the understanding and in doctrine n. 520; "and many men died of the waters," signifies that all who were such were destroyed by the falsities into which the truths of the Word were changed (n. 521); "because they were made bitter," signifies because the truths of the Word were falsified n. 522.

290. And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying. (5:13) This symbolizes a confession and glorification of the Lord by angels of the lowest heavens.

That it is a confession and glorification of the Lord by angels of the lowest heavens is apparent from the series, because the preceding confessions and glorifications of the Lord were made by angels of the higher and lower heavens (nos. 275ff., 286ff.). For there are three heavens, and in each countless societies, every one of which is called a heaven.

It is apparent that angels are meant by every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and in the sea, for we are told, "I heard (them) saying," and they said "Blessing and honor and glory and strength be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!"

[2] Their being called created things accords with the style of the Word, in which all created things, both those of the animal kingdom and those of the plant kingdom, symbolize various constituents in a person - in general constituents having to do with his will or affection, and constituents having to do with his intellect or thought. They have symbolic meanings because they are correspondent forms. And because the Word was written solely in terms of things that correspond, similar things are therefore said in it about angels in heaven and people of the church. To confirm this we will cite just a few passages, as the following:

(Jesus) said (to the disciples,) "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15)

But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or... the vegetation of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will recount to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of Jehovah has done this... (Job 12:7-9)

Let heaven and earth praise (Jehovah), the seas and everything that moves in them. For God will save Zion... (Psalms 69:34-35)

Praise Jehovah from the earth, you whales and all the depths. (Psalms 148:7)

I will utterly consume everything from the face of the earth...; I will consume man and beast; I will consume the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea. (Zephaniah 1:2-3, Revelation 8:7-9)

The heavens will be glad, the earth will rejoice, the sea will pitch and roll, and all its fullness; the field will exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing before Jehovah. For He is coming, coming to judge the earth. (Psalms 96:11-13)

And so on in many other places.

[3] The text says, "every created thing," and the meaning is every reformed thing, or all reformed people. For to create means, symbolically, to reform and regenerate (no. 254).

To be shown the meaning of "in heaven," "on the earth," and "under the earth," see no. 260 above. And for the meaning of the sea, no. 238. It is apparent from this what is symbolically meant by "such as are in the sea, and all that are in them." Such things as are in the Word are meant by the fish of the sea, and these are sensual affections, which are the lowest affections of the natural self. For in the spiritual world people's affections look at a distance like fish, and as being in a sea, because the atmosphere in which they exist appears as though made of water, and thus as a sea, in the eyes of the inhabitants who dwell in the heavens and on the earth there, as may be seen in no. 238 above, and as regards fish, in no. 405.
