1 Tämä on se, minkä Amos, joka paimenien seassa Tekoassa oli, näki Israelissa, Ussian Juudan kuninkaan ajalla, ja Jerobeamin Joaksen pojan, Israelin kuninkaan ajalla, kahta vuotta ennen maan järistystä.

2 Ja sanoi: Herra on Zionista kiljuva, ja Jerusalemista antaa hän äänensä kuulla, että paimenien laidun surkiana oleman pitää, ja Karmeli ylhäältä kuivuman.

3 Näin sanoo Herra: kolmen ja neljän Damaskun vian tähden en tahdo minä häntä säästää, että he Gileadin rautaisilla vaunuilla runtelivat.

4 Vaan minä lähetän tulen Hasaelin huoneesen; sen pitää Benhadadin huoneet kuluttaman.

5 Ja rikon Damaskun salvat, ja hävitän Avenin laakson asuvaiset, ja sen, joka valtikkaa pitää, siitä kauniista huoneesta; niin että Syrian kansa pitää Kiriin vietämän, sanoo Herra.

6 Näin sanoo Herra: kolmen ja neljän Gatsan vian tähden en minä tahdo häntä säästää, että he ovat vangitut vielä vanginneet, ja heidät Edomiin ajaneet.

7 Vaan minä lähetän tulen Gatsan muuriin, joka heidän huoneensa pitää kuluttaman.

8 Ja tahdon Asdodin asuvaiset, ja sen, joka valtikkaa pitää, Askalonista hävittää; ja minun käteni on oleva Akronia vastaan, niin että hukkuman pitää, mitä Philistealaisista jäänyt on, sanoo Herra, Herra.

13 Näin sanoo Herra: kolmen ja neljän Ammonin lasten vian tähden en tahdo minä heitä säästää, että he ovat raskaat vaimot halki leikanneet Gileadissa, levittääksensä rajojansa.

14 Vaan minä sytytän tulen Rabban muuriin; sen pitää kuluttaman hänen huoneensa. Niinkuin sodan aikana parutaan, ja niinkuin tuuli tulee tuulispään aikana:

15 Niin pitää myös heidän kuninkaansa ja päämiehensä ynnä vietämän pois vangittuina, sanoo Herra.

Exploring the Meaning of Amos 1

Amos was a prophet in ancient Israel during the reigns of Jeroboam II and Uzziah. His writings/sayings date from around 760-755 BC.

In his explanations of the inner meaning of the Word, Swedenborg summarizes the meaning of Amos's prophecies in his unpublished work, "The Inner Meaning of the Prophets and Psalms". We've used that text, and references made elsewhere by Swedenborg to these verses, and then the more general system of words and their symbolism that he described, to suggest the outlines of the internal sense of these Bible chapters.

In Amos 1:1-2, the verses describe the Lord teaching us about the Word and doctrine from the Word. In this book of the Bible, the prophet Amos symbolizes the Lord. Amos was a shepherd, and of course that metaphor is used to describe the Lord Jesus Christ, too, in the New Testament.

The book of Amos describes the Lord's anger and impatience with the Children of Israel - in the literal sense. Inside, though, it is really a story of the Lord’s great love and concern for us. This is a book of promise: The Lord will triumph over hell’s quest to dominate us and destroy the gift of salvation. This victory is not an occasional interest of the Lord’s; He has an “ardent zeal” to protect us.

In verse 2, the "roaring of the Lord from Zion" and the "uttering of His voice from Jerusalem" teach us several things about Him in this context:

- He has grievous distress for His church and people.

- He has an ardent zeal for protecting heaven and the church.

- He warns of coming vastations.

- He points to the drying up of our “Mount Carmel” and the effects this will have on our “vineyards.”

There are different ways to destroy true ideas and good loves. Verses 3-15 in this chapter describe the different ways that people do this.

Verses 3-5 are talking about people who pervert knowledges from the Word, knowledges which help us form true, useful doctrine. When people successfully corrupt knowledge from the Word, they also undermine the good that would come from that knowledge. But, people who do this will perish, spiritually.

Verses 6-8 describe people who apply the Word to create or reinforce heretical false ideas. That's not a good thing to do; they will perish, too.

Verses 9-10 address people who pervert knowledges [cognitiones] of good and truth, and thereby injure the external sense of the Word.

Verses 11-12 are about people who pervert the sense of the letter of the Word by falsity, by which doctrine perishes.

Finally, verses 13-15 describe people who falsify the truths of the sense of the letter of the Word: they do not resist in the day of combat, but destroy the truth of doctrine.

What are we to make of this? One take-away is that the Lord loves us, and wants to protect us. But how can we avoid these various falsity traps? The Lord wants us to carefully, holistically, read the Word and seek the truths in it - those in the literal sense, and those in the internal sense. From these we should form sound doctrine, and develop good loves that can be built on true ideas.

Hosea 1

1 The word of Yahweh that came to Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

2 When Yahweh spoke at first by Hosea, Yahweh said to Hosea, "Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution and children of unfaithfulness; for the land commits great adultery, forsaking Yahweh."

3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; and she conceived, and bore him a son.

4 Yahweh said to him, "Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel on the house of Jehu, and will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease.

5 It will happen in that day that I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel."

6 She conceived again, and bore a daughter. Then he said to him, "Call her name Lo-Ruhamah; for I will no longer have mercy on the house of Israel, that I should in any way pardon them.

7 But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and will save them by Yahweh their God, and will not save them by bow, sword, battle, horses, or horsemen."

8 Now when she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, she conceived, and bore a son.

9 He said, "Call his name Lo-Ammi; for you are not my people, and I will not be yours.

10 Yet the number of the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea, which can't be measured nor numbered; and it will come to pass that, in the place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.'

11 The children of Judah and the children of Israel will be gathered together, and they will appoint themselves one head, and will go up from the land; for great will be the day of Jezreel.
