Deuteronoomia 21

Studie

   

1 Kui sellel maal, mille Issand, su Jumal, annab sulle pärida, leitakse üks tapetu väljal lamamas, ilma et teataks, kes tema on tapnud,

2 siis peavad su vanemad ja kohtumõistjad välja minema ja mõõtma kauguse linnadeni, mis on ümber selle tapetu.

3 Linnas, mis on tapetule ligemal, võtku linna vanemad mullikas, kellega ei ole tööd tehtud, kes ei ole ikkes vedanud,

4 ja selle linna vanemad viigu mullikas alaliselt voolava veega orgu, mida ei harita ega külvata, ja nad murdku seal orus mullika kael!

5 Ja preestrid, Leevi pojad, astugu ette, sest Issand, su Jumal, on valinud nemad, et nad teeniksid teda ja õnnistaksid Issanda nimel: nende sõna kohaselt lahendatagu iga riid ja vägivald!

6 Ja kõik tapetule ligemal oleva linna vanemad pesku oma käsi mullika kohal, kelle kael orus murti.

7 Ja nad tunnistagu ning öelgu: 'Meie käed ei ole valanud seda verd ja meie silmad ei ole seda näinud.

8 Anna andeks oma rahvale Iisraelile, kelle sa oled lunastanud, Issand! Ära pane süütut verd oma Iisraeli rahva keskele!' Siis lepitatakse neile see veresüü.

9 Nõnda kõrvalda sina süüta veri enese keskelt, sest sa pead tegema, mis õige on Issanda silmis!

10 Kui sa lähed sõtta oma vaenlaste vastu ja Issand, su Jumal, annab nad sinu kätte ja sina võtad neist vange

11 ja näed vangide hulgas ühte ilusa välimusega naist, armud temasse ja tahad teda võtta enesele naiseks,

12 siis vii ta oma kotta; ta ajagu oma pea paljaks ja lõigaku sõrmeküüned!

13 Ta võtku vangirüü seljast ja jäägu su kotta; ta nutku oma isa ja ema ühe kuu päevad ja pärast seda võid sa minna tema juurde ja teda naida, ja ta saagu su naiseks!

14 Aga kui ta sulle enam ei meeldi, siis lase ta minna, kuhu ta tahab; aga sa ei tohi teda raha eest müüa ega orjastada, sest sa oled teda häbistanud.

15 Kui mehel on kaks naist, ühte ta armastab, aga teist ta vihkab, ja nad sünnitavad temale pojad, niihästi see, keda ta armastab, kui ka see, keda ta vihkab, ja esmasündinud poeg on vihatu oma,

16 siis ei tohi ta päeval, mil ta jaotab oma poegadele pärisosaks seda, mis tal on, pidada esmasündinuks armastatu poega vihatu poja asemel, kes on ju esmasündinu,

17 vaid ta peab vihatu poja tunnistama esmasündinuks, andes temale kaks osa kõigest, mis tal on olemas, sest too on tema mehejõu esimene vili; tolle päralt on esmasünniõigus.

18 Kui kellelgi on kangekaelne ja tõrges poeg, kes ei kuula oma isa ja ema sõna, ja kuigi nad teda karistavad, ei kuula ta neid ometi,

19 siis võtku ta isa ja ema ning viigu tema ta linna vanemate juurde ta asukoha väravasse

20 ja nad öelgu tema linna vanemaile: 'See meie poeg on kangekaelne ja tõrges, ta ei kuula meie sõna, ta on kõlvatu ja joodik!'

21 Siis visaku kõik ta linna mehed ta kividega surnuks. Nõnda kõrvalda kurjus enese keskelt, ja kogu Iisrael kuulgu seda ning kartku!

22 Ja kui kellegi peal on surma väärt patt ja ta surmatakse ning sa pood ta puusse,

23 siis ei tohi ta laip jääda ööseks puusse, vaid sa pead ta selsamal päeval kindlasti maha matma, sest poodu on Jumalast neetud; ära roojasta oma maad, mille Issand, su Jumal, annab sulle pärisosaks!

132. (vii) IT IS A FUNDAMENTAL ERROR ON THE PART OF THE CHURCH TO BELIEVE THAT THE PASSION ON THE CROSS WAS THE REAL ACT OF REDEMPTION. THAT ERROR, TOGETHER WITH THE ERRONEOUS BELIEF IN THREE DIVINE PERSONS EXISTING FROM ETERNITY, HAS SO PERVERTED THE WHOLE CHURCH THAT THERE IS NO REMAINDER OF SPIRITUALITY LEFT IN IT.

Is there any subject which does more to fill and pack the books of orthodox theology to-day, or any that is taught and driven home more zealously in colleges, and is more often preached and ranted about in pulpits, than the belief that God the Father in His anger with the human race not only drove it away from Him, but actually placed it under the ban of universal damnation, thus excommunicating it; but because He is gracious, He persuaded or impelled His own Son to come down and take upon Himself the sentence of damnation, so as to appease His Father's anger; and it is only in this way that He is able to look upon man with any favour? They add that this too was accomplished by means of the Son, for instance, in order to take upon Himself the damnation of the human race, by allowing Himself to be flogged by the Jews, have His face spat upon, and then be crucified as accursed in the sight of God (Deuteronomy 21:23). The Father was propitiated when this had been done, and through His love for His Son revoked the damnation, but only for those for whom the Son interceded, so that He became in perpetuity a Mediator with His Father.

[2] These and similar phrases ring through our churches to-day, re-echoing from the walls like the echoes in woodlands and filling the ears of all listeners. But is there anyone, whose reasoning faculty is enlightened and made whole by the reading of the Word, who cannot see that God 1 is mercy and clemency itself, since He is love itself and good itself, and these qualities are His essence? And that it is therefore a contradiction to say that mercy itself or good itself could look upon man in anger, and pass sentence of damnation on him, and still remain what He is in His Divine essence? Such actions can hardly be attributed to an upright person, but rather to a wicked one; nor to an angel of heaven, but rather to a spirit from hell. So it is an unspeakable crime to attribute such acts to God.

[3] But if one enquires the reason, it is this: people have taken the passion on the cross to be the real act of redemption. From that source these errors have flowed, just as one mistake produces a whole series, or as a jar of vinegar can only yield vinegar, or a disordered mind nothing but madness. The one deduction leads to other theories of the same type, for they lie hidden in the deduction, and come forth one after another. From the belief that the passion on the cross was the redeeming act, yet more scandalous and ignoble ideas about God can emerge and be extracted, until, as Isaiah says:

The priest and the prophet go astray through strong drink. They stumble in judgment, all the tables are covered with vomit brought up, Isaiah 28:7-8.
