Exodus 1

Studie

And these are the names of the sons of Israel who had come into Egypt; with Jacob had they come, each with his household:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;

Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.

And all the souls that had come out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; and Joseph was in Egypt.

And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

And the children of Israel were fruitful, and swarmed and multiplied, and became exceeding strong; and the land was full of them.

And there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

And he said to his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and stronger than we.

Come on, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass that, if war occur, they take side with our enemies and fight against us, and go up out of the land.

And they set over them service-masters to oppress them with their burdens. And they built store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Rameses.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and spread; and they were distressed because of the children of Israel.

And the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with harshness;

and they embittered their life with hard labour in clay and bricks, and in all manner of labour in the field: all their labour with which they made them serve was with harshness.

And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives -- of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other was Puah --

and he said, When ye help the Hebrew women in bearing, and see [them] on the stool, if it be a son, then ye shall kill him, but if a daughter, then she shall live.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt had said to them, but saved the male children alive.

And the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, Why have ye done this, and saved the male children alive?

And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian; for they are strong, and they have borne before the midwife comes to them.

And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and became very strong.

And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, but every daughter ye shall save alive.

6641. 'And every soul, those who came out of Jacob's thigh' means everything that springs from general truth. This is clear from the meaning of soul' in an ordinary sense as a person, here a member of the spiritual Church, though in the internal sense truth and goodness are meant by 'soul' because these are what make a person human, 6605, 6626; from the meaning of 'thigh' as conjugial love, dealt with in 3021, 4277, 4280, 5050-5062, and - since 'thigh' means conjugial love - as all love, both celestial and spiritual, 3021, 4277, 4280, 4575, so that 'coming out of the thigh' means truth and goodness springing from the heavenly marriage, and consequently the Church's truth and good (for these when they are genuine are born from the heavenly marriage, which is a marriage of goodness and truth); and from the representation of 'Jacob' as truth and also good in the natural, but truth and good as a general whole since his sons are separate truths and forms of good within that general whole, dealt with in 6637. The reason why 'Jacob' here represents truths as a general whole is that the subject is the spiritual Church. For this Church begins in truths as a general whole, and by means of them is led into its good. With a member of the spiritual Church there is no knowledge of what spiritual good is, nor thus any acceptance of it, except through truth; for he does not have from good any perception of truth such as a member of the celestial Church has.

4598. 'Israel travelled on' means the celestial-spiritual of the natural then. This is clear from the meaning of 'travelling on' as a further stage or a continuation, dealt with in 4375, 4554, in this case towards aspects more interior still, and from the representation of 'Israel' here as the celestial-spiritual of the natural, dealt with in 4286. What the celestial-spiritual of the natural is has been explained already, namely the good of truth, or the good of charity arrived at through the truth of faith. Little knowledge exists in the world of what an advance towards more interior aspects is. It is not an advance into knowledge of facts, for that kind of advance is often made without any advancement towards interior things, and more often still is accompanied by a movement away from these. Neither is it an advance in maturity of judgement, for this too is sometimes accompanied by a movement away from interior things. Nor yet is it an advance made into cognitions of interior truth, for these count for nothing if a person does not have any affection for them. An advance towards interior things is an advance nearer to heaven and the Lord made by means of the cognitions of truth which have been implanted in an affection for them, and so is an advance made by means of the affections.

[2] What an advance towards interior things is like is not apparent to anyone in the world; but in the next life it is plain to see. In that life it is an advance out of a kind of haze into light; for compared with others people who are concerned solely with more external things live in a haze, and are also seen by the angels to do so, whereas those who have a concern for more internal things dwell in light, and consequently in wisdom since the light there is wisdom. And what is amazing, those living in the haze cannot see that those in light are in light, whereas those dwelling in light can see that those in the haze are in a haze. Since the subject is the advance made by the Lord's Divine towards more interior aspects, Jacob is called Israel here; but where that advance is not the subject he is called Jacob, as in verse 20 immediately before this, and in the final verse of this chapter.
