1 Potom zavolal hlasem velikým, tak že jsem slyšel, řka: Přistupte hejtmané k tomuto městu, a jeden každý s zbrojí svou hubící v ruce své.

2 A aj, šest mužů přišlo cestou k bráně hořejší, kteráž patří na půlnoci, maje každý zbroj svou rozrážející v ruce své. Muž pak jeden byl u prostřed nich, oděný rouchem lněným, a kalamář písařský při bedrách jeho; a přišedše, stáli u oltáře měděného.

3 Sláva pak Boha Izraelského sstoupila byla s cherubína, na kterémž byla, k prahu domu, a zvolala na muže toho oděného rouchem lněným, při jehož bedrách byl kalamář písařský.

4 I řekl jemu Hospodin: Přejdi prostředkem města, prostředkem Jeruzaléma, a znamenej znamením na čelích muže ty, kteříž vzdychají a naříkají nade všemi ohavnostmi dějícími se u prostřed něho.

5 Oněmno pak řekl tak, že jsem slyšel: Projděte skrze město za ním, a bíte; neodpouštějž oko vaše, aniž se slitovávejte.

6 Starce, mládence i pannu, maličké i ženy mordujte do vyhubení, ale ke všelikému muži, na němž by bylo znamení, nepřistupujte, a od svatyně mé počněte. Takž začali od mužů těch starších, kteříž byli před chrámem.

7 (Nebo jim byl řekl: Poškvrňte domu, a naplňte síně zbitými. Jdětež.) A vyšedše, bili v městě.

8 I stalo se, když je bili, a já pozůstal, že jsem padl na tvář svou, a zvolal jsem, řka: Ach, Panovníče Hospodine, zdaliž zahubíš všecken ostatek Izraelský, vylévaje prchlivost svou na Jeruzalém?

9 I řekl mi: Nepravost domu Izraelského a Judského veliká jest velmi velice, a naplněna jest země mordy, a město plné jest převrácenců. Nebo říkali: Opustil Hospodin zemi tuto, a Hospodin nikoli nevidí nás.

10 Protož já také cestu jejich na hlavu jejich obrátím; neodpustí oko mé, aniž se slituji.

11 A aj, muž oděný rouchem lněným, při jehož bedrách byl kalamář, oznámil to, řka: Učinil jsem, jakž jsi mi rozkázal.

269. And a rainbow was round about the throne in aspect like an emerald, signifies the appearance of Divine truth in the heavens about the Lord. This is evident from the signification of "a rainbow in aspect like an emerald," as denoting the appearance of Divine truth in its circumference; for "a rainbow round about the throne" signifies Divine truth round about; "in aspect like" signifies appearance. The appearance was like an emerald, because it had reference to the Last Judgment; for the color of this stone is green, and "green" signifies truth obscured. Divine truth in its brightness appears either of the color of heaven, or in various colors in beautiful order like a rainbow; but when obscured it appears of the color of an emerald. The heaven that was obscured was the heaven called "the former heaven," on which judgment was to be executed, and which was about to perish (See Revelation 21:1). On this account "a rainbow round about like an emerald" is mentioned. "Rainbow" signifies Divine truth in the heavens in its order and consequently in its beauty, because there are infinite varieties of truth from good in the heavens, and when these are represented by colors, they present the aspect of a most beautiful rainbow. For this reason "a rainbow" was made the sign of the covenant after the flood (Genesis 9:12-17). 5708. 'Five measures more' means that it was much increased. This is clear from the meaning of 'five' as much, dealt with below; and from the meaning of 'measures' as states of truth received from good, dealt with in 3104. As regards 'five', this is a number which can mean little, or else something, or even much. Whatever its specific meaning, this stems from its relationship with the number of which it is a factor, 5291. When it is a factor of ten, much the same as ten, but in a smaller degree, is implied, five being half the number ten. For just as compound numbers have a similar meaning to the simple ones of which they are the product, 5291, 5335, so do divisors have a similar meaning to the compound numbers they divide, as with the relationship of five to ten, also to twenty, as well as to a hundred, a thousand, and so on. 'Ten' means what is full and complete, see 3107, 4638. 'Five measures more' were given to Benjamin than to the rest of his brothers on account of what was meant by this in the spiritual sense. Ten measures could not be given because that amount would have been far too much. The ancients knew from what had been handed down to them from the Most Ancient Church the meanings that certain numbers carried; they therefore used those numbers whenever something cropped up, the meaning of which could be conveyed by those numbers, as is the case with five here. At other times they employed many other numbers, such as three to mean what was complete from start to finish, seven to mean what was holy, or twelve to mean all things in their entirety.
