This work was published anonymously by Swedenborg in three Latin volumes, the first two in 1744, in Amsterdam, and the third in London, in 1745. In it, Swedenborg continues his detailed study of the human body, as the domain of the human soul.

In 1843-4, J. Garth Wilkinson published an English translation of this work, in London, printed by Wm. Newbery, entitled "The Animal Kingdom, considered anatomically, physically, and philosphically."

Part 1 deals with the organs of the digestive tract, and the abdomen. Part 2 deals with the organs of the thorax. Part 3 treats of the skin, and the senses of touch and taste, and organic forms in general.
