1 Kad Jefrem govoraše, beše strah; beše se uzvisio u Izrailju; ali se ogreši o Vala, te umre.

2 I sada jednako greše i grade sebi lijući od srebra svog po razumu svom likove, koji su svi delo umetničko, a oni govore za njih: Ljudi koji prinose žrtve neka celuju teoce.

3 Zato će biti kao oblak jutarnji i kao rosa koja u zoru padne, pa je nestane, kao pleva, koju odnosi vetar s gumna, i kao dim iz dimnjaka.

4 A ja sam Gospod Bog tvoj od zemlje misirske, i Boga osim mene nisi poznao, i osim mene nema ko bi spasao.

5 Ja te poznah u pustinji, u zemlji zasušenoj.

6 Imajući dobru pašu behu siti; ali čim se nasitiše, ponese se srce njihovo, zato me zaboraviše.

7 Zato ću im biti kao lav, kao ris vrebaću ih na putu.

8 Srešću ih kao medvedica kojoj uzmu medvediće, i rastrgaću im sve srce njihovo i izješću ih onde kao lav; zverje poljsko raskinuće ih.

9 Propao si, Izrailju; ali ti je pomoću meni.

10 Gde ti je car? Gde je? Neka te sačuva u svim gradovima tvojim; gde li su sudije tvoje, za koje si govorio: Daj mi cara i knezove?

11 Dadoh ti cara u gnevu svom, i uzeh ga u jarosti svojoj.

12 Svezano je bezakonje Jefremovo, ostavljen je greh njegov.

13 Bolovi kao u porodilje spopašće ga, sin je nerazuman, jer ne bi toliko vremena ostao u utrobi.

14 Od groba ću ih izbaviti, od smrti ću ih sačuvati; gde je, smrti, pomor tvoj, gde je, grobe, pogibao tvoja? Kajanje će biti sakriveno od očiju mojih.

15 Rodan će biti među braćom svojom; ali će doći istočni vetar, vetar Gospodnji, koji ide od pustinje, i usahnuće mu izvor, i studenac će mu zasušiti; on će odneti blago od svih dragih zaklada.

16 Samarija će opusteti, jer se odmetnu od Boga svog; oni će pasti od mača, deca će se njihova razmrskati i trudne žene njihove rasporiti.

482. Verse 17. For the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, signifies that the Lord will instruct them out of heaven. This is evident from the signification of "the Lamb," as being the Lord in relation to Divine truth (of which see above, n. 297, 343, 464); also from the signification of "throne," as being heaven (of which also above, n. 253; "in the midst of the throne" signifies in the universal heaven, for "in the midst" signifies in each and every thing, that is, in the whole, see above, n. 213; also from the signification of "to feed" as being to instruct (of which presently). This makes evident that "the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall feed them" signifies that the Lord will instruct them out of heaven. It is here said, "the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall feed them," and above, "He who sitteth on the throne shall dwell over them" which makes it very clear that it is the Lord who is meant both by "He who sitteth on the throne," and by "the Lamb in the midst of the throne," but "He who sitteth on the throne" means the Lord in relation to Divine good, and "the Lamb in the midst of the throne" means the Lord in relation to Divine truth; for "to dwell," which is said of Him that sitteth upon the throne, is predicated of good (See above, n. 470); and "to feed," which is said of the Lamb, is predicated of truths; for "to feed" signifies to instruct in truths.

[2] In the Word of the Old Testament mention is frequently made of "Jehovah" and "God," also of "Jehovah" and "the Holy One of Israel," and both mean the Lord alone, "Jehovah" the Lord in relation to Divine good, and "God" and "the Holy One of Israel" the Lord in relation to Divine truth; it is thus said because of the marriage of Divine good and Divine truth in every particular of the Word. That "to feed" signifies to instruct can be seen without further explanation, since it is a custom derived from the Word to call those who teach "pastors" (or feeders), and those who are instructed "a flock;" but why they are so called is not yet known, and shall therefore be told. In heaven where all things that appear before the eyes are representative, representing under a natural appearance the spiritual things that angels think and by which they are affected; thus are their thoughts and affections presented before their eyes in such forms as exist in the world, that is, in forms similar to natural things, and this by virtue of the correspondence that is established by the Lord between spiritual things and natural. (This correspondence has been treated of in many places; also in the work Heaven and Hell, n. 87-102, and 103-115.) It is from this correspondence that in heaven flocks of sheep, lambs, and goats appear feeding in green pastures, and also in gardens; and these appearances spring from the thoughts of those who are in the goods and truths of the church, and who from these think intelligently and wisely. It is from this that mention is so often made in the Word of "flock," "pasture," as also of "feeding," and "feeder" (or shepherd); for the Word in the letter consists of such things as appear in heaven before the eyes, and these signify correspondent spiritual things.

[3] As it is known in the church that "to feed" signifies to instruct, "pasture" instruction, and "shepherd" an instructor, a few passages only in which "feeding" and "pasture" are mentioned shall be quoted without further explanation. In Isaiah:

In that day shall thy cattle feed in a broad meadow (Isaiah 30:23).

He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; He shall gather the lambs into His arm, and shall gently lead them that give suck (Isaiah 40:11).

He shall say to the bound, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Reveal yourselves. They shall feed upon the ways, and in all the bare hills shall be their pasture (Isaiah 49:9).

In Jeremiah:

Against the shepherds that feed My people, ye have scattered My flock. Because of cursing the land mourneth; the pastures of the desert are dried up (Jeremiah 23:2, 10).

He shall feed Israel on Carmel and Bashan (Jeremiah 50:19).

In Ezekiel:

I will seek My flock and I will search them out. I will feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited places of the land. I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the mountains of the height of Israel shall their sheepcote be; there shall they lie down in a good sheepcote, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel (Ezekiel 34:11, 13, 14).

In Hosea:

I did know thee 1 in the wilderness, in a land of drought; where they had pasture (Hosea 13:5, 6).

In Joel:

The droves of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; and the droves of sheep are made desolate (Joel 1:18).

In Micah:

Out of Bethlehem of Ephrathah shall go forth one who shall stand and feed in the strength of Jehovah (Micah 5:2, 4).

Feed Thy people with Thy rod, the flock of Thine heritage; they shall feed in Bashan and Gilead (Micah 7:14).

In Zephaniah:

The remnants of Israel shall feed and lie down (Zephaniah 3:13).

In David:

Jehovah is my Shepherd, I shall not want; He will make me to lie down in pastures of herbage (Psalms 23:1, 2).

The Lord chose David; from following the ewes giving suck He brought him to feed Jacob His people, and Israel His inheritance; and he fed them in the integrity of his heart (Psalms 78:70-72).

Jehovah hath made us His people, and the flock of His pasture [keri]. Therefore we are His people and the flock of His pasture (Psalms 100:3).

In John:

Jesus said to Peter, Lovest thou Me? He said that he loved Him. He said unto him, Feed My lambs. He said a second time, Feed My sheep. Again He said a third time, Feed My sheep (John 21:15-17).

Also in many other passages, in which "to feed" signifies to instruct in truths, and "pasture" truths in which they are instructed.

1 A Samuilo reče Saulu: Gospod me je poslao da te pomažem za cara nad narodom Njegovim, nad Izrailjem; slušaj dakle reči Gospodnje.

2 Ovako veli Gospod nad vojskama: Opomenuh se šta je učinio Amalik Izrailju, kako mu se opro na putu kad je išao iz Misira.

3 Zato idi i pobij Amalika, i zatri kao prokleto sve što god ima; ne žali ga, nego pobij i ljude i žene i decu i šta je na sisi i volove i ovce i kamile i magarce.

4 Tada Saul sazva narod, i izbroja ih u Telaimu, i beše ih dvesta hiljada pešaka i deset hiljada ljudi od Jude.

5 I dođe Saul do grada amaličkog, i namesti zasedu u potoku.

6 I reče Saul Kenejima: Idite, odvojite se, uklonite se od Amalika, da vas ne bi potro s njima; jer ste vi učinili milost svim sinovima Izrailjevim kad su išli iz Misira. I otidoše Keneji od Amalika.

7 I Saul pobi Amalike od Avile do Sura, koji je prema Misiru.

8 I uhvati Agaga cara amaličkog živog, a sav narod njegov pobi oštrim mačem.

9 I Saul i narod njegov poštede Agaga i najbolje ovce i najbolje volove i ugojenu stoku i jaganjce i sve što beše dobro, i ne hteše pobiti; nego šta beše zlo i bez cene, ono pobiše.

10 Zato dođe reč Gospodnja k Samuilu govoreći:

11 Kajem se što sam Saula postavio carem, jer je odstupio od mene, i nije izvršio moje reči. I rasrdi se Samuilo vrlo, i vikaše ka Gospodu svu noć.

12 I ustavši rano Samuilo pođe pred Saula. I javiše Samuilu govoreći: Saul dođe u Karmil, i eno podiže sebi spomenik, pa se vrati odande i otide dalje i siđe u Galgal.

13 Kad Samuilo dođe k Saulu, reče mu Saul: Blagosloven da si Gospodu! Izvršio sam reč Gospodnju.

14 A Samuilo reče: Kakva je to bleka ovaca u ušima mojim? I rika volova koju čujem?

15 A Saul reče: Od Amalika dognaše ih; jer narod poštede najbolje ovce i najbolje volove da prinese na žrtvu Gospodu Bogu tvom; ostalo pak pobismo kao prokleto.

16 A Samuilo reče Saulu: Stani da ti kažem šta mi je rekao Gospod noćas. Reče mu: Govori.

17 Tada reče Samuilo: Nisi li bio mali sam u svojim očima, pak si postao glava plemenima Izrailjevim, i Gospod te pomaza za cara nad Izrailjem?

18 I Gospod te posla na ovaj put i reče: Idi, pobij grešne Amalike, i vojuj na njih dokle ih ne istrebite.

19 Zašto, dakle, ne posluša glas Gospodnji, nego se naklopi na plen, i učini zlo pred Gospodom?

20 A Saul odgovori Samuilu: Ta poslušao sam glas Gospodnji, i išao sam putem kojim me posla Gospod, i doveo sam Agaga cara amaličkog, a Amalike sam istrebio.

21 Nego narod uze od plena ovce i volove, najbolje između prokletih stvari, da prinese na žrtvu Gospodu Bogu tvom u Galgalu.

22 Ali Samuilo reče: Zar su mile Gospodu žrtve paljenice i prinosi kao kad se sluša glas Njegov? Gle, poslušnost je bolja od žrtve i pokornost od pretiline ovnujske.

23 Jer je neposlušnost kao greh od čaranja, i nepokornost kao sujeverstvo i idolopoklonstvo. Odbacio si reč Gospodnju, zato je i On tebe odbacio da ne budeš više car.

24 Tada reče Saul Samuilu: Zgrešio sam što sam prestupio zapovest Gospodnju i tvoje reči; jer pobojah se naroda i poslušah glas njegov.

25 Nego sada oprosti mi greh moj, i vrati se sa mnom da se poklonim Gospodu.

26 A Samuilo reče Saulu: Neću se vratiti s tobom, jer si odbacio reč Gospodnju, i zato je tebe Gospod odbacio da ne budeš više car nad Izrailjem.

27 I Samuilo se okrete da ide, ali ga Saul uhvati za skut od plašta njegovog, te se odadre.

28 Tada mu reče Samuilo: Odadro je Gospod carstvo Izrailjevo od tebe danas, i dao ga bližnjem tvom, koji je bolji od tebe.

29 I doista Junak Izrailjev neće slagati, niti će se raskajati; jer nije čovek da se kaje.

30 A on reče: Zgrešio sam; ali mi sad učini čast pred starešinama naroda mog i pred Izrailjem, i vrati se sa mnom da se poklonim Gospodu Bogu tvom.

31 I vrativši se Samuilo otide za Saulom, i pokloni se Saul Gospodu.

32 Potom reče Samuilo: Dovedite mi Agaga, cara amaličkog. I dođe k njemu Agag veseo, jer govoraše Agag: Zaista, prošla je gorčina smrtna.

33 Ali Samuilo reče: Kako je tvoj mač učinio te su žene ostale bez dece, tako će ostati bez dece tvoja majka među ženama. I iseče Samuilo Agaga pred Gospodom u Galgalu.

34 Potom otide Samuilo u Ramu, a Saul otide kući svojoj u Gavaju Saulovu.

35 I Samuilo ne vide više Saula do svoje smrti, i plakaše Samuilo za Saulom, što se Gospod pokaja što je postavio Saula carem nad Izrailjem.
