1 ויהי בעשתי עשרה שנה באחד לחדש היה דבר יהוה אלי לאמר׃

2 בן אדם יען אשר אמרה צר על ירושלם האח נשברה דלתות העמים נסבה אלי אמלאה החרבה׃

3 לכן כה אמר אדני יהוה הנני עליך צר והעליתי עליך גוים רבים כהעלות הים לגליו׃

4 ושחתו חמות צר והרסו מגדליה וסחיתי עפרה ממנה ונתתי אותה לצחיח סלע׃

5 משטח חרמים תהיה בתוך הים כי אני דברתי נאם אדני יהוה והיתה לבז לגוים׃

6 ובנותיה אשר בשדה בחרב תהרגנה וידעו כי אני יהוה׃

7 כי כה אמר אדני יהוה הנני מביא אל צר נבוכדראצר מלך בבל מצפון מלך מלכים בסוס וברכב ובפרשים וקהל ועם רב׃

8 בנותיך בשדה בחרב יהרג ונתן עליך דיק ושפך עליך סללה והקים עליך צנה׃

9 ומחי קבלו יתן בחמותיך ומגדלתיך יתץ בחרבותיו׃

10 משפעת סוסיו יכסך אבקם מקול פרש וגלגל ורכב תרעשנה חומותיך בבאו בשעריך כמבואי עיר מבקעה׃

11 בפרסות סוסיו ירמס את כל חוצותיך עמך בחרב יהרג ומצבות עזך לארץ תרד׃

12 ושללו חילך ובזזו רכלתך והרסו חומותיך ובתי חמדתך יתצו ואבניך ועציך ועפרך בתוך מים ישימו׃

13 והשבתי המון שיריך וקול כנוריך לא ישמע עוד׃

14 ונתתיך לצחיח סלע משטח חרמים תהיה לא תבנה עוד כי אני יהוה דברתי נאם אדני יהוה׃

15 כה אמר אדני יהוה לצור הלא מקול מפלתך באנק חלל בהרג הרג בתוכך ירעשו האיים׃

16 וירדו מעל כסאותם כל נשיאי הים והסירו את מעיליהם ואת בגדי רקמתם יפשטו חרדות ילבשו על הארץ ישבו וחרדו לרגעים ושממו עליך׃

17 ונשאו עליך קינה ואמרו לך איך אבדת נושבת מימים העיר ההללה אשר היתה חזקה בים היא וישביה אשר נתנו חתיתם לכל יושביה׃

18 עתה יחרדו האין יום מפלתך ונבהלו האיים אשר בים מצאתך׃

19 כי כה אמר אדני יהוה בתתי אתך עיר נחרבת כערים אשר לא נושבו בהעלות עליך את תהום וכסוך המים הרבים׃

20 והורדתיך את יורדי בור אל עם עולם והושבתיך בארץ תחתיות כחרבות מעולם את יורדי בור למען לא תשבי ונתתי צבי בארץ חיים׃

21 בלהות אתנך ואינך ותבקשי ולא תמצאי עוד לעולם נאם אדני יהוה׃

387. And with death. That this signifies the consequent extinction of spiritual life, is plain from the signification of death, as denoting the extinction of spiritual life (concerning which see above, n. 78, 186). That this is here signified by death is plain from the series of things in the internal sense; for it is said that power was given unto them to kill with the sword, with famine, and with death: and by the sword is signified falsity destroying truth; by famine, the deprivation of the knowledges of truth and good; whence by death is signified the extinction of spiritual life, for where falsity reigns, and where there are no knowledges of truth and good, there is no spiritual life; for it is acquired by the knowledges of truth and good applied to the uses of life. For man is born into all evil and the falsity thence, therefore he is also born entirely ignorant of all spiritual knowledges; in order, therefore, that he may be led from the evils and the falsities thence, into which he is born, and be led into the life of heaven, and be saved, it is necessary that he should learn the knowledges of truth and good, by which he can be introduced [into spiritual life] and become spiritual. From this series of things in the internal sense it is evident, that by death is here signified the extinction of spiritual life; this also is signified by spiritual death.
