8540. En een omer is het tiende deel van een efa; dat dit de hoeveelheid van het goede betekent, toen, staat vast uit de betekenis van een omer, omdat die het tiende deel van een efa was, dus de voldoende hoeveelheid; met tien immers wordt het volle aangeduid, nr. 3107, vandaar met het tiende deel een voldoende hoeveelheid, nr. 8468; en uit de betekenis van de efa, namelijk het goede.

Dat de efa het goede is, komt omdat daarmee en met de omer droge dingen, die tot spijs van dienst waren, werden gemeten, zoals: tarwe, gerst, meelbloem; en met de stoffen die tot de voeding behoren, worden de goedheden aangeduid en met de bath en met de hin werden de vloeistoffen die tot drank dienden, gemeten; vandaar worden met deze maten waarheden aangeduid; de houder of bevatter neemt deze betekenis aan van de inhoud.

Dat de efa tot maat heeft gediend, blijkt uit deze plaatsen; bij Mozes: ‘Een efa der gerechtigheid en een hin der gerechtigheid zult gij hebben’, (Leviticus 19:36).

Bij Ezechiël: ‘De efa en de bath zullen één maat hebben, omdat de efa het tiende van een omer is’, (Ezechiël 45:11).

Bij dezelfde: ‘Weegschalen der gerechtigheid en een efa der gerechtigheid en een bath der gerechtigheid zult gij hebben’, (Ezechiël 45:10); evenzo voor een maat bij (Amos 8:5).

Dat de efa het goede is, blijkt uit die plaatsen waar over het spijsoffer wordt gehandeld, waarvoor meel of meelbloem met de efa werd afgemeten, zoals in (Leviticus 5:11; Numeri 5:15; 28:5; Ezechiël 45:24; 46:7,11); en het spijsoffer betekent het goede.

En eveneens bij Zacharia: ‘De engel die in mij sprak, zei tot mij: Hef, ik bid u, de ogen op, wat is dit dat uitgaat. En ik zei: Wat is dit. Hij zei: Dit is de efa, uitgaande. Verder zei hij: Dit is hun oog in het gehele land. En zie, een talent van lood werd opgeheven en er was tegelijk een vrouw, deze zittend in het midden van de efa. Verder zei hij: Deze is het boze en hij wierp haar in het midden van de efa en hij wierp een steen van lood op de mond ervan. En ik hief mijn ogen op en ik zag, toen zie, twee vrouwen uitgaande en wind was in haar vleugels; zij hadden een tweetal vleugels zoals de vleugels van een ooievaar; en zij hieven de efa op tussen de aarde en tussen de hemel; en ik zei tot de engel die in mij sprak: Waarheen brengen zij de efa; en hij zei tot mij: Om haar een huis te bouwen in het land Sinear; en het zal bereid worden en zij zal daar blijven op haar zetel’, (Zacharia 5:5-11).

Wat deze tekst betekent, kan nooit iemand weten tenzij uit de innerlijke zin en tenzij hij daaruit weet wat de efa is, wat de vrouw in het midden ervan, wat de steen van lood op de mond van de efa en verder wat Sinear.

Uit de afzonderlijke dingen, wanneer die zijn losgewikkeld, blijkt duidelijk dat de ontwijding wordt aangeduid die in die periode in de Kerk was, met de efa immers wordt het goede aangeduid, met de vrouw het boze, zoals daar openlijk wordt gezegd; met de steen van lood het valse van het boze dat toesluit; de steen is immers het uiterlijk en uitwendig ware en vandaar in de tegengestelde zin het valse, nrs. 643, 1298, 3720, 6426 en het lood is het boze, nr. 8298; dus wordt met de vrouw in het midden van de efa, op de mond waarvan de steen van lood was, aangeduid het boze in het door het valse toegesloten goede, wat hetzelfde is als het profane, want het profane is het boze dat verbonden is met het goede, nr. 6348; de twee vrouwen opheffende de efa tussen de hemel en de aarde, zijn de Kerken, nrs. 252, 253, door welk het profane werd verbannen; Sinear, waarheen de vrouw in de efa werd gevoerd, is de uiterlijke eredienst, waarin van binnen het profane is, nrs. 1183, 1292.

8685. 'That Moses sat to judge the people' means the arrangement, effected by God's truth, with those belonging to the spiritual Church in the state before their actions sprang from good. This is clear from the representation of 'Moses' as God's truth going forth directly from the Lord, dealt with in 7010, 7382; from the meaning of 'judging' as effecting an arrangement (the reason why 'judging' has this meaning here is that God's truth does not judge anyone, but flows in and arranges things for its own reception, and after it has been received judgement then takes place in accordance with the laws of order; this is what is meant by the Lord's judgement in Matthew 25:31-end; John 5:22, 26-27, 30; 9:39, as is clear from the Lord's words where He says that He judges no one, John 3:17-21; 7:24; 12:47-48); and from the representation of Israel, to whom 'the people' refers here, as those belonging to the spiritual Church, dealt with above in 8645. From all this it is evident that 'Moses sat to judge the people' means the arrangement, effected by God's truth going forth directly from the Lord, with those belonging to the spiritual Church.

[2] This is so in the state before their actions spring from good, as is clear from what follows. There are two states that the person who is being regenerated and coming to have the Church within him passes through. In the first state his actions spring from truth, in the second from good, regarding which states see 8516, 8539, 8643, 8648, 8658. In both states the person is led by the Lord, in the first however through direct influx, but in the second through influx both direct and indirect. Regarding the influx of goodness and truth from the Lord in direct and indirect ways, see 6472-6478, 6982, 6985, 6996, 7054-7058, 7270. Direct influx is represented by the situation in which Moses alone judged the people, and influx both direct and indirect by the situation in which the rulers of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens who had been chosen were themselves to judge small matters, and to refer large matters to Moses, spoken of further on. But these things are arcana which hardly anyone can understand unless he is enlightened by the Lord, and being enlightened has perception. Those kinds of influx and also the effects they produce can, it is true, be described. Nevertheless a person can have no proper understanding of them without perception from heaven; and perception from heaven comes only to those who have a love of truth springing from good, yet not even to them unless it is a love of truth springing from genuine good.

1 Moses answered, "But, behold, they will not believe me, nor listen to my voice; for they will say, 'Yahweh has not appeared to you.'"

2 Yahweh said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod."

3 He said, "Throw it on the ground." He threw it on the ground, and it became a snake; and Moses ran away from it.

4 Yahweh said to Moses, "Put forth your hand, and take it by the tail." He Put forth his hand, and laid hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand.

5 "That they may believe that Yahweh, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you."

6 Yahweh said furthermore to him, "Now put your hand inside your cloak." He put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow.

7 He said, "Put your hand inside your cloak again." He Put his hand inside his cloak again, and when he took it out of his cloak, behold, it had turned again as his other flesh.

8 "It will happen, if they will neither believe you nor listen to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

9 It will happen, if they will not believe even these two signs, neither listen to your voice, that you shall take of the water of the river, and pour it on the dry land. The water which you take out of the river will become blood on the dry land."

10 Moses said to Yahweh, "O Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before now, nor since you have spoken to your servant; for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue."

11 Yahweh said to him, "Who made man's mouth? Or who makes one mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Isn't it I, Yahweh?

12 Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall speak."

13 He said, "Oh, Lord, please send someone else."

14 The anger of Yahweh was kindled against Moses, and he said, "What about Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Also, behold, he comes forth to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.

15 You shall speak to him, and put the words in his mouth. I will be with your mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what you shall do.

16 He will be your spokesman to the people; and it will happen, that he will be to you a mouth, and you will be to him as God.

17 You shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs."

18 Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, "Please let me go and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, and see whether they are still alive." Jethro said to Moses, "go in peace."

19 Yahweh said to Moses in Midian, "Go, return into Egypt; for all the men who sought your life are dead."

20 Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. Moses took God's rod in his hand.

21 Yahweh said to Moses, "When you go back into Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your hand, but I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go.

22 You shall tell Pharaoh, 'Thus says Yahweh, Israel is my son, my firstborn,

23 and I have said to you, "Let my son go, that he may serve me;" and you have refused to let him go. Behold, I will kill your son, your firstborn.'"

24 It happened on the way at a lodging place, that Yahweh met Moses and wanted to kill him.

25 Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet; and she said, "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me."

26 So he let him alone. Then she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood," because of the circumcision.

27 Yahweh said to Aaron, "Go into the wilderness to meet Moses." He went, and met him on God's mountain, and kissed him.

28 Moses told Aaron all the words of Yahweh with which he had sent him, and all the signs with which he had instructed him.

29 Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.

30 Aaron spoke all the words which Yahweh had spoken to Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.

31 The people believed, and when they heard that Yahweh had visited the children of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped.
