Explanation of Matthew 5:5

Da Brian David

The "meek" in the Bible are, according to the Writings, those in "the good of charity," which means they love to do what is good for others. To "inherit" means that we are given possessions by the Lord – He implants in us the true love of good. This might sound like a subtle difference, but moving from the desire to do good things for people to a state in which we truly love other people is actually significant.

"Earth" here could also be translated as "land." Both generally represent a church, from the beliefs among angels in heaven to the beliefs of a like-minded group in this world to the beliefs we each hold as individuals; of the two, though, "earth" tends to represent the external, day-to-day thoughts. That's not the case here; the Writings tell us this verse means that caring people will be elevated to a state of mutual love in heaven, a love expressed through angelic wisdom.

Righteous

This stained-glass window in St. Peter’s, Clapham, London, is one of eight depicting the Beatitudes.

The word "righteous" has taken on a bit of negative shading in modern language. That may be because we hear it most often as part of the word "self-righteous," a rather scathing term for someone who thinks he is quite a good person -- almost certainly better than anyone around him -- and is in a position to judge others without being judged himself. The original word, however, is not negative at all: A righteous person is simply someone who does what is right. The spiritual meaning of "righteous" reflects that: people described as "righteous" act from a love of serving others, and that love is "righteousness." This is commonly described as "the good of charity," "charity" meaning a state of caring for others.
