Ezechiele 41

1 Poi mi condusse nel tempio, e misurò i pilastri: sei cubiti di larghezza da un lato e sei cubiti di larghezza dall’altro, larghezza della tenda.

2 La larghezza dell’ingresso era di dieci cubiti; le pareti laterali dell’ingresso avevano cinque cubiti da un lato e cinque cubiti dall’altro. Egli misurò la lunghezza del tempio: quaranta cubiti, e venti cubiti di larghezza.

3 Poi entrò dentro, e misurò i pilastri dell’ingresso: due cubiti; e l’ingresso: sei cubiti; e la larghezza dell’ingresso: sette cubiti.

4 E misurò una lunghezza di venti cubiti e una larghezza di venti cubiti in fondo al tempio; e mi disse: "Questo è il luogo santissimo".

5 Poi misurò il muro della casa: sei cubiti; e la larghezza delle camere laterali tutt’attorno alla casa: quattro cubiti.

6 Le camere laterali erano una accanto all’altra, in numero di trenta, e c’erano tre piani; stavano in un muro, costruito per queste camere tutt’attorno alla casa, perché fossero appoggiate senz’appoggiarsi al muro della casa.

7 E le camere occupavano maggiore spazio man mano che si salì di piano in piano, poiché la casa aveva una scala circolare a ogni piano tutt’attorno alla casa; perciò questa parte della casa si allargava a ogni piano, e si saliva dal piano inferiore al superiore per quello di mezzo.

8 E io vidi pure che la casa tutta intorno stava sopra un piano elevato; così le camere laterali avevano un fondamento: una buona canna, e sei cubiti fino all’angolo.

9 La larghezza del muro esterno delle camere laterali era di cinque cubiti;

10 e lo spazio libero intorno alle camere laterali della casa e fino alle stanze attorno alla casa aveva una larghezza di venti cubiti tutt’attorno.

11 Le porte delle camere laterali davano sullo spazio libero: una porta a settentrione, una porta a mezzogiorno; e la larghezza dello spazio libero era di cinque cubiti tutt’all’intorno.

12 L’edifizio ch’era davanti allo spazio vuoto dal lato d’occidente aveva settanta cubiti di larghezza, il muro dell’edifizio aveva cinque cubiti di spessore tutt’attorno, e una lunghezza di novanta cubiti.

13 Poi misurò la casa, che aveva cento cubiti di lunghezza. Lo spazio vuoto, l’edifizio e i suoi muri avevano una lunghezza di cento cubiti.

14 La larghezza della facciata della casa e dello spazio vuoto dal lato d’oriente era di cento cubiti.

15 Egli misurò la lunghezza dell’edifizio davanti allo spazio vuoto, sul di dietro, e le sue gallerie da ogni lato: cento cubiti. L’interno del tempio, i vestiboli che davano sul cortile,

16 gli stipiti, le finestre a grata, le gallerie tutt’attorno ai tre piani erano ricoperti, all’altezza degli stipiti, di legno tutt’attorno. Dall’impiantito fino alle finestre (le finestre erano sbarrate),

17 fino al di sopra della porta, l’interno della casa, l’esterno, e tutte le pareti tutt’attorno, all’interno e all’esterno, tutto era fatto secondo precise misure.

18 E v’erano degli ornamenti di cherubini e di palme, una palma fra cherubino e cherubino,

19 e ogni cherubino aveva due facce: una faccia d’uomo, vòlta verso la palma da un lato, e una faccia di leone vòlta verso l’altra palma, dall’altro lato. E ve n’era per tutta la casa, tutt’attorno.

20 Dall’impiantito fino al di sopra della porta c’erano dei cherubini e delle palme; così pure sul muro del tempio.

21 Gli stipiti del tempio erano quadrati, e la facciata del santuario aveva lo stesso aspetto.

22 L’altare era di legno, alto tre cubiti, lungo due cubiti; aveva degli angoli; e le sue pareti, per tutta la lunghezza, erano di legno. L’uomo mi disse: "Questa è la tavola che sta davanti all’Eterno".

23 Il tempio e il santuario avevano due porte;

24 E ogni porta aveva due battenti; due battenti che si piegano in due pezzi: due pezzi per ogni battente.

25 E su d’esse, sulle porte del tempio, erano scolpiti dei cherubini e delle palme, come quelli sulle pareti. E sulla facciata del vestibolo, all’esterno c’era una tettoia di legno.

26 E c’erano delle finestre a grata e delle palme, da ogni lato, alle pareti laterali del vestibolo, alle camere laterali della casa e alle tettoie.

9659. 'And there shall be eight boards and their bases [made] from silver' means support in every respect from good and through truth that springs from good. This is clear from the meaning of 'eight' as what is so in every respect, dealt with below; from the meaning of 'boards' as good that lends support, dealt with in 9634; and from the meaning of 'bases [made] from silver' as support provided through truth from good, dealt with in 9643.

[2] 'Eight' means in every respect because this number has the same meaning as two and four, being the product of these when multiplied together. 'Two' and 'four' mean being joined together, completely so, 5194, 8423, 8877, and consequently also mean what is complete, 9103, and therefore what is so in every respect; for what exists in completeness does so in every respect. Another reason why 'eight' means what exists in completeness and in every respect is that since 'a week' means a whole period from beginning to end, 2044, 3845, 'the eighth day' means a complete state, from which a new beginning then commences. This explains why males had to be circumcised on the eighth day, Genesis 17:12; 21:4, for circumcision was a sign of purification from foul kinds of love by means of the truth of faith, 2039, 2046 (end), 2799, 3412, 3413, 4462. The foreskin corresponded to the defilement of good by those kinds of love, 4462, 7045, 7225, and the knife of flint with which circumcision was carried out was a sign of the truth of faith by means of which purification was accomplished, 2039 (end), 2046 (end), 2799, 7044.

[3] What exists in completeness and in every respect is also meant by 'eight' following 'seven' in Micah,

When Asshur comes into our land and treads our palaces we will set up over him seven shepherds and eight princes of men (homo), and they will feed 1 the land of Asshur with the sword; and he will deliver [us] from Asshur. Micah 5:5-6.

'Asshur' stands for reasoning on the basis of one's own intelligence about the Church's forms of good and its truths. Deliverance totally or in every respect from consequent falsity is meant by 'eight princes of men' who will bring destruction, 'princes of men' being the leading truths that rise out of good.

[4] The fact that 'eight' means completeness and in every respect is also clear from an experience I had involving the admission and reception of some communities into heaven, about which see 2130. I saw as many as twelve communities received first, and after them as many as eight more; for people admitted and received into heaven are those who have been purified from earthly things, that is, from all love of them, and have gone on to receive instruction. The number eight on that occasion was a sign of that which was complete.

[5] 'Eight' has a similar meaning elsewhere in the Word, for example where it says that the portico of the gateway was 'eight cubits' long from the house, and that there were 'eight steps' up to the house, in Ezekiel 40:9, 31, 41. The description there is of the new house, by which the Lord's New Church is meant, truths leading to good and from good back to truths being meant by 'the portico' and 'the steps'.

[6] Anyone who does not know that spiritual realities or real things are implied by the numbers used in the Word cannot possibly see any such reality nor thus anything holy in the measures and numbers where the tabernacle, Solomon's temple, and after these the new house, new temple, and new land in Ezekiel, are described, when yet not a syllable in the Word is devoid of spiritual meaning. Let all who have intelligence weigh up in their mind what the measures and numbers in Chapters 40-48 of Ezekiel really mean, also the measures and numbers in John, at Revelation 21:17, where it says that the angel measured the wall of the new Jerusalem, a hundred and forty-four cubits, and that this measure was that of a man (homo), that is, of an angel, and also in the following, besides many other places,

Let him who has intelligence reckon the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man (homo), that is, its number is six hundred and sixty-six. Revelation 13:18.

4264. 'Thirty milking camels and their colts; forty young cows and ten young bulls; twenty she-asses and ten foals' means things that are subservient, general and specific. This is clear from the meaning of 'camels and their colts', also of 'young cows and young bulls' as well as of 'she-asses and their foals' as things which belong to the natural man. These things have been referred to several times already - 'camels' in 3048, 3071, 3143, 3145; 'young bulls' in 1824, 1825, 2180, 2781, 2830; 'she-asses' in 2781; and these things which belong to the natural man, in relation to other things are subservient, see 1486, 3019, 3020, 3167. Consequently things that are subservient, general and specific, are meant by the animals mentioned here. As regards the numbers of the animals being 200 she-goats, 20 he-goats, 200 sheep, 20 rams, 30 camels and their colts, 40 young cows, 10 young bulls, 20 she-asses and 10 foals, these are arcana which cannot be revealed without much explanation and an extensive drawing of inferences. For all numbers used in the Word mean real things, 482, 487, 575, 647, 648, 755, 813, 1988, 2075, 2252, 3252; and what they mean has been shown where they have occurred in previous chapters.

[2] I have sometimes been amazed that when angels' conversing together came down into the world of spirits their conversation revealed itself in various numbers, and also that when numbers have been read in the Word the angels have understood real things. For no numerical value ever penetrates into heaven since numbers belong to measurements both of space and of time, and these belong to the world and to the natural order to which, in the heavens, states and changes of states correspond. The most ancient people, who were celestial and had communication with angels, were aware of what simple numbers and also compound numbers meant. The meanings of these were conveyed from those people to their descendants and to members of the Ancient Church. These are things which find scarcely any acceptance in the member of the Church at the present day who believes that nothing holier is concealed in the Word apart from that which is seen in the letter.
