In Genesis 11:30, this signifies that the evil and falsity of idolatrous worship reproduced itself no further. (Arcana Coelestia 1371-1372)

In 1 Samuel 2:5, this signifies the church from the gentiles, who did not have the Word. (Apocalypse Revealed 103)

In Isaiah 54:1, this signifies people who are not in good because they are not in truths, but yet long for truths, as do upright nations outside the church. (Arcana Coelestia 9325[7])

In Deuteronomy 21:4, this signifies the natural mind not cultivated by truths and goods of faith because of ignorance. (Arcana Coelestia 9262)

9252. '[And] you shall not respond in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert [justice]' means not being associated with those who turn forms of good and truths into evils and falsities, and vice versa. This is clear from the meaning of 'responding in a dispute' as answering in regard to what is just and fair, and what is good and true, about which there is contention, dealt with in 9024 1 , for 'answering' means giving an opinion and expressing a judgement; from the meaning of 'turning aside after many' as conforming with many and so being associated with them; and from the meaning of 'perverting' as turning truth into falsity and good into evil, and vice versa.

Notes de bas de page:

1. The word rendered dispute here, in Chapter 23 is rendered quarrel in 9024.
