Explanation of Matthew 5:7

От Brian David

‘Brother Juniper and the Beggar,’ by Spanish Baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Juniper, one of the original followers of St. Francis of Assissi, was renowned for his generosity. When told he could no longer give away his clothes, he instead simply told the needy, like the beggar in the painting, that he couldn’t give them his clothes, but wouldn’t stop them from taking them.

"Mercy" in the Bible represents love, and the desire we have to do good things for people when we love them. The ultimate mercy, of course, comes from the Lord, who loves us constantly and infinitely, forgives us every wrong and works constantly to get us to choose heaven.

This verse, then, tells us that those who love others and act from that love will be fully receptive of the Lord's love, ultimately in heaven.

9808. 'From the midst of the children of Israel' means in heaven and in the Church. This is clear from the meaning of 'Israel' as those who belong to the Church, thus in the abstract sense the Church itself, dealt with in 4286, 6426, 6637, 6862, 6868, 7035, 7062, 7198, 7201, 7215, 7223, 8805, 9340. And since 'Israel' means the Church it also means heaven; for heaven and the Church make one, and also the Church is the Lord's heaven on earth. Every member of the Church furthermore has heaven within himself when truth and at the same time good which come from the Lord reside in him.
