Matthew 10

1 And calling··for His twelve disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast· them ·out, and to cure every disease and every malady.

2 And the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, also called Thaddaeus;

4 Simon the Kananite*, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

5 These twelve Jesus sent··out, charging them, saying, Into the way of the nations go ye not, and into a city of the Samaritans enter ye not.

6 But go ye rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7 And as you go, preach, saying that the kingdom of the heavens is near.

8 Cure the··sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast··out demons; freely you have received, freely give.

9 Possess not gold, nor silver, nor bronze for your belts,

10 nor pack for a journey, nor two tunics, nor shoes, nor a staff; for the worker is worthy of his food.

11 And into whatever city or village you enter, search out who in it is worthy, and··there remain until you go out.

12 And when you come into the house, greet it.

13 And if indeed the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14 And if· anyone shall ·not receive you, nor hear your words, when you go··out of that house or city, shake··off the dust of your feet.

15 Amen I say to··you, it shall be more··tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

16 Behold, I send· you ·out as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore prudent as serpents, and simple* as doves.

17 And beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and will scourge you in their synagogues.

18 And you shall be led before governors and also kings on account of Me, for a witness to them and to the nations.

19 But when they shall deliver· you ·up, be· not ·anxious about how or what you shall speak, for it shall be given to you in that hour what you shall speak.

20 For you are not they who speak, but the Spirit of your Father is what speaks in you.

21 And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and father child; and children shall rise up against parents, and put· them ·to··death.

22 And you shall be hated by all on account of My name; but he who endures to the end, he shall be saved.

23 And when they persecute you in this city, flee into the other; for amen I say to you, You shall not have finished the cities* of Israel until the Son of Man has come.

24 The disciple is not above the teacher, nor the servant above his lord.

25 It is sufficient for the disciple that he become as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the householder Beelzebub, how··much more them of his household?

26 Fear them not therefore; for there is nothing covered, that shall not be uncovered, and secret, that shall not be known.

27 What I say to you in the darkness, say ye in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach ye upon the housetops.

28 And be not afraid of those who kill the body, but are· not ·able to kill the soul; but rather be afraid of Him who is··able to destroy both soul and body in gehenna*.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion*? And not one of them shall fall upon the earth without your Father.

30 And of you, even the hairs of the head are all numbered.

31 Fear not therefore; you are··of· more ·value than many sparrows.

32 Whoever therefore shall profess Me before men, I also will profess him before My Father who is in the heavens.

33 But whoever shall deny Me before men, I also will deny him before My Father who is in the heavens.

34 Suppose not that I am come to cast peace upon earth; I am not come to cast peace, but a sword.

35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law* against her mother-in-law.*

36 And the man’s enemies shall be they of his own house.

37 He who loves father or mother above Me is not worthy of Me, and he who loves son or daughter above Me is not worthy of Me.

38 And whoever does not take his cross, and follow after Me, is not worthy of Me.

39 He who finds his soul shall lose it, and he who loses his soul for My sake shall find it.

40 He who receives you, receives Me, and he who receives Me, receives Him who sent Me.

41 He who accepts a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive the reward of a prophet; and he who accepts someone just in the name of someone just, shall receive the reward of someone just.

42 And whoever shall give· a cup of cold water to one of these little··ones ·to··drink in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.

303. In the celestial sense this commandment means being linked with the Lord, leading to peace as the result of protection from hell. The Sabbath means rest and, in this highest sense, peace. That is why the Lord is called the Prince of peace, and He calls Himself peace; this can be seen from the following passages:

A child is born for us, a son is given to us, on whose shoulder is the dominion, and his name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, God, Hero, the everlasting Father, the Prince of peace. Of the extension of his dominion and peace there will be no end, Isaiah 9:6-7.

Jesus said, I leave peace with you, my peace I give to you, John 14:27.

Jesus said, I have said these things so that you may have peace in me, John 16:33.

How pleasant upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news and makes us hear of peace, saying, Your God 1 reigns, Isaiah 52:7.

Jehovah shall redeem my soul in peace, Psalms 55:18.

The work of righteousness 2 is peace, the toil of righteousness is rest, and safety for ever, so that they may dwell in the dwelling of peace, and in the tents of safety and in tranquil ease, Isaiah 32:17-18.

Jesus said to the seventy whom He sent out, Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace be upon this house 3 ; and if there be a son of peace there, let your peace rest upon him, Luke 10:5-6; Matthew 10:12-14.

Jehovah will speak peace to His people, righteousness and peace will kiss each other, Psalms 85:8, 10.

When the Lord Himself appeared to the disciples, He said, Peace be with you, John 20:19, 21, 26.

Moreover, Isaiah (chapters 65-66 and elsewhere) deals with the state of peace, into which the Lord will bring them. The people who will be brought into this state are those who are received into the new church which is being established by the Lord at the present time. It may be seen in my book HEAVEN AND HELL 284-290 what is the essence of this peace enjoyed by the angels of heaven and those who are in the Lord. This reference also makes it plain why the Lord calls Himself the Lord of the Sabbath, that is, of rest and peace.

Isaiah 66

1 Thus says Yahweh, "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: what kind of house will you build to me? and what place shall be my rest?

2 For all these things has my hand made, and [so] all these things came to be," says Yahweh: "but to this man will I look, even to him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my word.

3 He who kills an ox is as he who kills a man; he who sacrifices a lamb, as he who breaks a dog's neck; he who offers an offering, [as he who offers] pig's blood; he who burns frankincense, as he who blesses an idol. Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations:

4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears on them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they did not hear: but they did that which was evil in my eyes, and chose that in which I didn't delight."

5 Hear the word of Yahweh, you who tremble at his word: "Your brothers who hate you, who cast you out for my name's sake, have said, 'Let Yahweh be glorified, that we may see your joy;' but it is those who shall be disappointed.

6 A voice of tumult from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of Yahweh that renders recompense to his enemies.

7 "Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she delivered a son.

8 Who has heard such a thing? who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? shall a nation be brought forth at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth?" says Yahweh: "shall I who cause to bring forth shut [the womb]?" says your God.

10 "Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her: Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn over her;

11 that you may nurse and be satisfied at the comforting breasts; that you may drink deeply, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory."

12 For thus says Yahweh, "Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream: and you will nurse. You will be carried on her side, and will be dandled on her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted in Jerusalem."

14 You will see [it], and your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like the tender grass: and the hand of Yahweh shall be known toward his servants; and he will have indignation against his enemies.

15 For, behold, Yahweh will come with fire, and his chariots shall be like the whirlwind; to render his anger with fierceness, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

16 For by fire will Yahweh execute judgment, and by his sword, on all flesh; and the slain of Yahweh shall be many.

17 "Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves [to go] to the gardens, behind one in the midst, eating pig's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, they shall come to an end together," says Yahweh.

18 "For I [know] their works and their thoughts: [the time] comes, that I will gather all nations and languages; and they shall come, and shall see my glory.

19 "I will set a sign among them, and I will send such as escape of them to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the islands afar off, who have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the nations.

20 They shall bring all your brothers out of all the nations for an offering to Yahweh, on horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and on mules, and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says Yahweh, as the children of Israel bring their offering in a clean vessel into the house of Yahweh.

21 Of them also will I take for priests [and] for Levites," says Yahweh.

22 "For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me," says Yahweh, "so your seed and your name shall remain.

23 It shall happen, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me," says Yahweh.

24 "They shall go forth, and look on the dead bodies of the men who have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they will be loathsome to all mankind."
