1 Ja Joosep läks ja teatas vaaraole ning ütles: 'Mu isa ja vennad ja nende lambad, kitsed ja veised ja kõik, mis neil oli, on tulnud Kaananimaalt, ja vaata, nad on Gooseni maakonnas.'

2 Ja ta võttis oma vendade hulgast viis meest ja tõi need vaarao ette.

3 Ja vaarao küsis tema vendadelt: 'Mis teie amet on?' Ja nad vastasid vaaraole: 'Su sulased on lambakarjased, niihästi meie ise kui meie isad.'

4 Ja nad ütlesid vaaraole: 'Me oleme maale tulnud võõrastena elama, sest su sulaste karjale ei olnud sööta, kuna Kaananimaal on kange nälg. Luba siis nüüd oma sulaseid elada Gooseni maakonnas!'

5 Ja vaarao rääkis Joosepiga, öeldes: 'Sinu isa ja vennad on su juurde tulnud.

6 Egiptusemaa on su ees lahti, pane oma isa ja vennad elama parimasse maakonda. Elagu nad Gooseni maakonnas, ja kui sa tunned nende hulgast tublisid mehi, siis pane need mu karja ülevaatajaiks!'

7 Siis Joosep tõi sisse oma isa Jaakobi ja pani seisma vaarao ette; ja Jaakob õnnistas vaaraod.

8 Ja vaarao küsis Jaakobilt: 'Kui palju sul eluaastaid on?'

9 Ja Jaakob vastas vaaraole: 'Aastaid, mis ma võõrana olen elanud, on sada kolmkümmend aastat. Piskud ja kurjad on olnud mu eluaastad ja need ei ulatu mu isade eluaastateni nende võõrsiloleku ajal.'

10 Siis Jaakob õnnistas vaaraod ja läks ära vaarao juurest.

11 Ja Joosep paigutas oma isa ja vennad elama ja andis neile maaomandi Egiptusemaal kõige paremas maakonnas, Raamsese maakonnas, nagu vaarao oli käskinud.

12 Ja Joosep hoolitses leivaga oma isa ja vendade ja kogu isa pere eest, vastavalt nende väetite laste suudele.

13 Aga kogu maal ei olnud leiba, sest näljahäda oli väga kange, ja Egiptusemaa ja Kaananimaa olid näljast nõrkemas.

14 Ja Joosep kogus kokku kõik Egiptusemaal ja Kaananimaal leiduva raha vilja eest, mida osteti; ja Joosep viis raha vaarao kotta.

15 Kui raha oli lõppenud Egiptusemaalt ja Kaananimaalt, siis tulid kõik egiptlased Joosepi juurde, öeldes: 'Anna meile leiba! Kas peame su silma ees surema, sellepärast et raha on otsas?'

16 Ja Joosep vastas: 'Andke oma loomad ja mina annan teile nende eest, kui raha on otsas.'

17 Ja nad tõid oma loomad Joosepile ja Joosep andis neile leiba hobuste, lamba- ja kitsekarjade, veisekarjade ja eeslite eest; nõnda muretses ta neile sel aastal leiba kõigi nende loomade eest.

18 Kui see aasta lõppes, siis järgmisel aastal tulid nad tema juurde ja ütlesid temale: 'Me ei saa oma isandale salata, et raha on otsas ja loomakarjad on meie isanda käes. Meil ei ole isanda ees muud üle jäänud kui ainult meie ihud ja põllumaa.

19 Kas peame su silma ees surema, niihästi me ise kui meie põllud? Osta meid ja meie põllud leiva eest, et me oma põldudega saaksime vaaraole orjadeks! Anna meile seemet, et jääksime elama ega sureks ja et põllud ei jääks tühjaks!'

20 Siis Joosep ostis vaaraole kogu Egiptuse põllumaa, sest egiptlased müüsid igaüks oma põllu, sellepärast et nälg ahistas neid. Nõnda sai maa vaarao omaks.

21 Ja ta tegi rahva tema orjaks, Egiptuse ühest äärest teiseni.

22 Ainult preestrite põldusid ta ei ostnud, sest preestritel oli sissetulek vaaraolt ja nemad elatusid sissetulekust, mida vaarao neile andis; seepärast nemad ei müünud oma põldusid.

23 Ja Joosep ütles rahvale: 'Vaata, ma olen nüüd ostnud teid ja teie põllud vaaraole. Näe, siin on teile seemet, külvake see põldudele!

24 Aga saagist peate andma viiendiku vaaraole, kuna neli osa jäägu teie kätte teile põlluseemneks, samuti toiduks teile ja neile, kes teie peredes on, ja toiduks teie väetitele lastele.'

25 Ja nad vastasid: 'Sina oled meid elus hoidnud! Kui leiame armu oma isanda silmis, siis jääme vaaraole orjadeks.'

26 Ja Joosep tegi selle seaduseks Egiptuse põllumaa kohta tänapäevani, et vaaraole saab viiendik; ainult preestrite põllud ei saanud vaarao omaks.

27 Ja Iisrael jäi elama Egiptusemaale Gooseni maakonda; nad jäid sinna paigale, olid viljakad ja neid sai väga palju.

28 Ja Jaakob elas Egiptusemaal seitseteist aastat, ja Jaakobi päevi, tema eluaastaid, oli sada nelikümmend seitse aastat.

29 Kui Iisraeli surmapäev ligines, siis ta kutsus oma poja Joosepi ning ütles temale: 'Kui ma nüüd olen su silmis armu leidnud, siis pane oma käsi mu puusa alla ja osuta mulle heldust ja truudust: ära mata mind Egiptusesse,

30 sest ma tahan magada oma vanemate juures. Vii mind Egiptusest ära ja mata nende hauda!' Ja ta vastas: 'Ma teen su sõna järgi!'

6073. 'What are your works?' means regarding duties and services. This is clear from the meaning of 'works' as forms of good, dealt with in 6048, thus useful services and duties, for these are forms of good. Every good that is called a good of charity consists in nothing other than useful service, and useful services are nothing other than works done for one's neighbour, country, Church, and the Lord's kingdom. Regarded essentially charity does not actually become charity until it passes into action and becomes a work; for loving someone but not doing anything good for him when the possibility exists is not really loving him. Doing good for him when the possibility exists, and doing it with all one's heart, is loving him; for then the actual deed or work contains all that constitutes charity towards him. For works embrace every aspect of charity and faith present with a person and are called forms of spiritual good, made such through the exercise of charity, that is, through useful services.

[2] Because the angels in heaven are governed by good received from the Lord, they have no greater desire than to perform useful services. These are the very delights of their life, and in the measure that they perform useful services they enjoy blessing and happiness, 453, 696, 997, 3645.

This is also the Lord's teaching in Matthew,

The Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father together with His angels, and at that time He will repay everyone according to his works. Matthew 16:17.

'Works' is not used here to mean works such as they are in outward appearance but such as they appear inwardly - that is to say, what kind of charity they hold within them. Angels do not look on works in any other way.

[3] Furthermore, since works are a combination of every aspect of charity and faith present with a person, and since life causes charity to be charity and faith to be faith, and so to be good, John was loved more than the other disciples by the Lord and leaned on His breast at the Last Supper, John 21:20. For that disciple represented the good deeds or works of charity, see the Prefaces to Genesis 18, 22. For the same reason the Lord said to him Follow Me; He did not say it to Peter, 1 who represented faith, see those same Prefaces, and this led faith, which is Peter, to be indignant and say,

Lord, but what about this man? Jesus said to Him, If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You, follow Me. John 21:19, 11-23.

This was also a prediction that faith would come to despise works, even though the Lord associates Himself with them, as may also be seen quite clearly from the Lord's words addressed to the sheep and the goats at Matthew 25, where nothing else than works are listed in Verses Matthew 25:34-46. The fact that faith would disown the Lord is evident from the representation by Peter in his denial of Him three times, [Matthew 26:34.] His denial 'at night' means the final period of the Church when no charity would exist any longer, 6000; his denial 'three times' means that at that point the final period would be complete, 1825, 2788, 4495, 5159; and 'before the cock crowed' means before a new phase of the Church had arrived, for twilight and morning which follow night mean the first phase of a Church, 2405, 5962.

2405. That 'as dawn ascended' means when the Lord's kingdom draws near is clear from the meaning of 'the dawn' or morning in the Word. Since the subject in this chapter is the successive states of a Church, what happened in the evening, then what happened during the night have been referred to first. What took place when it was twilight comes now, and further on what took place after sunrise. Twilight is expressed here by 'as dawn ascended', which means the time when the upright are separated from the evil. This separation is described in the present verse to verse 22 as Lot being brought out together with his wife and daughters and being saved. The fact that separation takes place prior to judgement is clear from the Lord's words in Matthew,

Before Him will be gathered all the nations, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Matthew 25:32.

[2] In the Word that period of time or state is called 'the dawn' because that is when the Lord comes, or what amounts to the same, when His kingdom draws near. It is similar with the good, for at that time something akin to early morning twilight or the dawn shines with them. This explains why in the Word the Lord's coming is compared to and also called 'the morning'. Its comparison to the morning is seen in Hosea,

Jehovah will revive us after two days, on the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live before Him. And we shall know, and we shall press on to know Jehovah. As the dawn is His going forth. Hosea 6:2-3.

'Two days' stands for the period of time and the state which precedes. 'Third day' stands for judgement or the Lord's coming, and so for the approach of His kingdom, 720, 901 - a coming or approach which is compared to 'the dawn'.

[3] In Samuel,

The God of Israel is like morning light, [when] the sun rises on a cloudless morning; from brightness, from rain, grass comes out of the earth. 2 Samuel 23:4.

'The God of Israel' stands for the Lord, for no other God of Israel was meant in that Church, where every single feature of that Church was representative of Him. In Joel,

The day of Jehovah is coming, for it is near, a day of darkness and thick darkness, a day of cloud and gloom, like the dawn spread over the mountains. Joel 2:1-2.

This too refers to the Lord's coming and His kingdom. The words 'a day of darkness and thick darkness' are used because at that time the good are separated from the evil, as Lot was here from the men of Sodom; and after the good have been separated the evil perish.

[4] The Lord's coming or the approach of His kingdom is not compared to the morning but actually called such, as in Daniel,

The Holy One said, For how long is the vision, the continual [burnt offering], and the desolating transgression? He said to me, Up to the evening [when it is becoming] morning two thousand three hundred times, and the Holy One will be justified. The vision of the evening and the morning which has been told is the truth. Daniel 8:13-14, 26.

'The morning' here clearly stands for the Lord's coming. In David,

Your people are free-will offerings, in the day of Your power, in the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the dawn You have the dew of Your nativity. Psalms 110:3.

The whole of this psalm refers to the Lord and His victories in temptations, which are meant by 'the day of power and the beauties of His holiness'. 'From the womb of the dawn' means Himself, thus the Divine Love from which He fought.

[5] In Zephaniah,

Jehovah is righteous in the midst of her. He will do no wrong. In the morning, in the morning He will bring His judgement to light. Zephaniah 3:5.

'morning' stands for the time and the state when judgement takes place, which is the same as the Lord's coming, and this in turn is the same as the approach of His kingdom.

[6] Since 'the morning' meant these things, Aaron and his sons, to provide the same representation, were commanded to set up a lamp and tend it from evening till morning before Jehovah, Exodus 27:21. The 'evening' referred to here is the twilight prior to morning, 2323. For a similar reason it was commanded that the fire on the altar was to be rekindled every dawn, Leviticus 6:12; also that none of the paschal lamb and the consecrated elements of sacrifices were to remain until the morning, Exodus 12:10; 23:18; 34:25; Leviticus 22:29-30; Numbers 9:12 - by which was meant that when the Lord came sacrifices would come to an end.

[7] In a general sense 'morning' is used to describe both the time when dawn breaks and the time when the sun rises. 'morning' in this case stands for judgement in regard to the good as well as on the evil, as in the present chapter - 'The sun had gone forth over the earth and Lot came to Zoar; and Jehovah rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire', verses 23-24. It in like manner stands for judgement on the evil, in David,

In the mornings I will destroy all the wicked of the land, to cut off from the city of Jehovah all workers of iniquity. Psalms 101:8.

And in Jeremiah,

Let that man be like the cities which Jehovah overthrew, and He does not repent; and let him hear a cry in the morning. Jeremiah 20:16.

[8] Seeing that 'the morning' in the proper sense means the Lord, His coming, and so the approach of His kingdom, what else is meant by 'the morning' becomes clear, namely the rise of a new Church, for that Church is the Lord's kingdom on earth. That kingdom is meant both in a general and in a particular sense, and indeed in a specific sense, the general being when any Church on earth is established anew; the particular, when a person is being regenerated and becoming a new man, for the Lord's kingdom is in that case being established in him and he is becoming the Church; and the specific, as often as good flowing from love and faith is at work with him, for this is what constitutes the Lord's coming. Consequently the Lord's resurrection on the third morning, Mark 16:2, 9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1, embodies in the particular and the specific senses the truth that He rises daily, indeed every single moment, in the minds of regenerate persons.
