39. At Whitsuntide 1 after the Lord's supper, I was exceedingly happy, and yet outwardly afflicted. The temptation came in the afternoon, in quite a different way; but strong; for I was assured of having got my sins forgiven, and yet I could by no means restrain my flying thoughts from venting a little, against my better judgment; which was the work of the evil one, through permission. Prayer, and also God's Word calmed down these thoughts. Faith was there in full, but trust and confidence and love seemed to be missing.
