4 ⲤⲒⲘⲰⲚ ⲠⲔⲀⲚⲀⲚⲒⲦⲎⲤ ⲘⲚ ⲒⲞⲨⲆⲀⲤ ⲠⲒⲤⲔⲀⲢⲒⲰⲦⲎⲤ ⲠⲈⲚⲦⲀϤⲠⲀⲢⲀⲆⲒⲆⲞⲨ ⲘⲘⲞϤ.

5 ⲠⲈⲒⲘⲚⲦⲤⲚⲞⲞⲨⲤ ⲀϤϪⲞⲞⲨⲤⲈ ⲚϬⲒ ⲒⲎⲤⲞⲨⲤ ⲀϤⲠⲀⲢⲀⲄⲄⲈⲒⲖⲈ ⲚⲀⲨ ⲈϤϪⲰ ⲘⲘⲞⲤ ϪⲈ ⲘⲠⲢⲂⲰⲔ ⲈϨⲒⲎ ⲚϨⲈⲐⲚⲞⲤ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲘⲠⲢⲂⲰⲔ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲚ ⲈⲠⲞⲖⲒⲤ ⲚⲤⲀⲘⲀⲢⲒⲦⲎⲤ.

7 ⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲀⲂⲰⲔ ⲆⲈ ⲦⲀϢⲈⲞⲈⲒϢ ⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚϪⲰ ⲘⲘⲞⲤ ϪⲈ ⲘⲈⲦⲀⲚⲞⲒ. ⲀⲤϨⲰⲚ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲚ ⲚϬⲒ ⲦⲘⲚⲦⲢⲢⲞ ⲚⲘⲠⲎⲨⲈ.

8 ⲚⲈⲦϢⲰⲚⲈ ⲀⲢⲒⲠⲀϨⲢⲈ ⲈⲢⲞⲞⲨ ⲚⲈⲦⲤⲞⲂϨ ⲦⲂⲂⲞⲞⲨ ⲚⲆⲀⲒⲘⲰⲚⲒⲞⲚ ⲚⲞϪⲞⲨ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲀⲦⲈⲦⲚϪⲒ ⲚϪⲒⲚϪⲎ ϮⲚϪⲒⲚϪⲎ.

9 ⲘⲠⲢϪⲠⲞ ⲚⲎⲦⲚ ⲚⲞⲨⲚⲞⲨⲂ. ⲞⲨⲦⲈ ⲞⲨϨⲀⲦ. ⲞⲨⲆⲈ ϨⲞⲘⲚⲦ ϨⲚ ⲚⲈⲦⲚⲘⲞϪϨ.

10 ⲞⲨⲦⲈ ⲠⲎⲢⲀ ⲈⲦⲈϨⲒⲎ ⲞⲨⲦⲈ ϢⲦⲎⲚ ⲤⲚⲦⲈ ⲞⲨⲦⲈ ⲞⲨⲦⲞⲞⲨⲈ ⲞⲨⲦⲈ ⲞⲨϬⲈⲢⲰⲂ ϤⲈⲘⲠϢⲀ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲚϬⲒ ⲠⲈⲢⲄⲀⲦⲎⲤ ⲚⲦⲈϤϨⲢⲈ.

11 ⲦⲠⲞⲖⲒⲤ ⲆⲈ ⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲀⲂⲰⲔ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲚ ⲈⲢⲞⲤ ⲎⲠϮⲘⲈ. ϢⲒⲚⲈ ϨⲢⲀⲒ ⲚϨⲎⲦⲤ ϪⲈ ⲚⲒⲘ ⲠⲈⲦⲘⲠϢⲀ ⲚⲦⲈⲦⲚϬⲰ ϨⲘ ⲠⲘⲀ ⲈⲦⲘⲘⲀⲨ ϢⲀⲚⲦⲈⲦⲚⲈⲒ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ.

12 ⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲂⲎⲔ ⲆⲈ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲚ ⲈⲠⲎⲒ ⲀⲤⲠⲀⲌⲈ ⲘⲘⲞϤ.

13 ⲀⲨⲰ ⲈϢⲰⲠⲈ ⲠⲎⲒ ⲘⲠϢⲀ ⲘⲀⲢⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲈⲒⲢⲎⲚⲎ ⲈⲒ ⲈϨⲢⲀⲒ ⲈϪⲰϤ. ⲈϢⲰⲠⲈ ⲆⲈ ⲚϤⲘⲠϢⲀ ⲀⲚ ⲘⲀⲢⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲈⲒⲢⲎⲚⲎ ⲔⲞⲦⲤ ⲈⲢⲰⲦⲚ.

14 ⲠⲈⲦⲈⲚϤⲚⲀϪⲒⲦⲎⲨⲦⲚ ⲆⲈ ⲀⲚ ⲀⲨⲰ ⲚϤⲦⲘⲤⲰⲦⲘ ⲈⲚⲈⲦⲚϢⲀϪⲈ ⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲚⲎⲨ ⲆⲈ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲘ ⲠⲎⲒ ⲎⲦⲠⲞⲖⲒⲤ ⲈⲦⲘⲘⲀⲨ ⲎⲠϮⲘⲈ ⲚⲞⲨϨⲈ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲘⲠϢⲞⲈⲒϢ ⲚⲚⲈⲦⲚⲞⲨⲈⲢⲎⲦⲈ.

15 ϨⲀⲘⲎⲚ ϮϪⲰ ⲘⲘⲞⲤ ⲚⲎⲦⲚ. ϪⲈ ⲞⲨⲚⲞⲨⲘⲦⲞⲚ ⲚⲀϢⲰⲠⲈ ϨⲘ ⲠⲔⲀϨ ⲚⲤⲞⲆⲞⲘⲀ ⲘⲚ ⲄⲞⲘⲞⲢⲢⲀ ϨⲘ ⲠⲈϨⲞⲞⲨ ⲚⲦⲈⲔⲢⲒⲤⲒⲤ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲈⲦⲠⲞⲖⲒⲤ ⲈⲦⲘⲘⲀⲨ.

16 ⲈⲒⲤ ϨⲎⲎⲦⲈ ⲀⲚⲞⲔ ϮϪⲞⲞⲨ ⲘⲘⲰⲦⲚ ⲚⲐⲈ ⲚϨⲈⲚⲈⲤⲞⲞⲨ ϨⲚ ⲦⲘⲎⲦⲈ ⲚϨⲈⲚⲞⲨⲰⲚϢ. ϢⲰⲠⲈ ϬⲈ ⲚⲤⲀⲂⲈ ⲚⲐⲈ ⲚⲚϨⲞϤ ⲀⲨⲰ ⲚⲀⲔⲈⲢⲀⲒⲞⲤ ⲚⲐⲈ ⲚⲚⲒϬⲢⲞⲞⲘⲠⲈ .

17 ϮϨⲦⲎⲦⲚ ⲆⲈ ⲈⲢⲰⲦⲚ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲚ ⲚⲈⲢⲰⲘⲈ. ⲤⲈⲚⲀⲠⲀⲢⲀⲆⲒⲆⲞⲨ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲘⲘⲰⲦⲚ ⲈⲚⲤⲨⲚϨⲈⲆⲢⲒⲞⲚ ⲀⲨⲰ ϨⲢⲀⲒ ϨⲚ ⲚⲈⲨⲤⲨⲚⲀⲄⲰⲄⲎ ⲤⲈⲚⲀⲘⲀⲤⲦⲒⲄⲞⲨ ⲘⲘⲰⲦⲚ.

18 ⲚⲤⲈϪⲒⲦⲎⲨⲦⲚ ⲚⲚϨⲎⲄⲈⲘⲰⲚ ⲘⲚ ⲚⲢⲢⲰⲞⲨ ⲈⲦⲂⲎⲎⲦ ⲈⲨⲘⲚⲦⲘⲚⲦⲢⲈ ⲚⲀⲨ ⲘⲚ ⲚϨⲈⲐⲚⲞⲤ.

19 ϨⲞⲦⲀⲚ ⲆⲈ ⲈⲨϢⲀⲚⲠⲀⲢⲀⲆⲒⲆⲞⲨ ⲘⲘⲰⲦⲚ ⲘⲠⲢϤⲒⲢⲞⲞⲨϢ ϪⲈ ⲚⲀϢ ⲚϨⲈ. ⲎⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲀϪⲞⲞⲤ ϪⲈ ⲞⲨ. ⲤⲈⲚⲀϮ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲚⲎⲦⲚ ϨⲚ ⲦⲈⲨⲚⲞⲨ ⲈⲦⲘⲘⲀⲨ ϪⲈ ⲞⲨ ⲠⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲚⲀϪⲞⲞϤ.

20 ⲚⲦⲰⲦⲚ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲀⲚ ⲠⲈⲦϢⲀϪⲈ ⲀⲖⲖⲀ ⲠⲈⲠⲚⲈⲨⲘⲀ ⲘⲠⲈⲦⲚⲈⲒⲰⲦ ⲠⲈⲦϢⲀϪⲈ ⲚϨⲎⲦⲦⲎⲨⲦⲚ.

21 ⲞⲨⲚⲞⲨⲤⲞⲚ ⲆⲈ ⲚⲀⲠⲀⲢⲀⲆⲒⲆⲞⲨ ⲘⲠⲈϤⲤⲞⲚ ⲈⲠⲘⲞⲨ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲞⲨⲈⲒⲰⲦ ⲘⲠⲈϤϢⲎⲢⲈ. ⲚⲦⲈⲚϢⲎⲢⲈ ⲦⲰⲞⲨⲚ ⲈϪⲚ ⲚⲈⲨⲈⲒⲞⲦⲈ ⲚⲤⲈⲘⲞⲨⲞⲨⲦ ⲘⲘⲞⲞⲨ.

22 ⲚⲦⲈⲦⲚϢⲰⲠⲈ ⲈⲨⲘⲞⲤⲦⲈ ⲘⲘⲰⲦⲚ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲒⲦⲚ ⲢⲰⲘⲈ ⲚⲒⲘ ⲈⲦⲂⲈ ⲠⲀⲢⲀⲚ. ⲠⲈⲦⲚⲀϨⲨⲠⲞⲘⲈⲒⲚⲈ ⲆⲈ ϢⲀⲂⲞⲖ ⲠⲀⲒ ⲠⲈⲦⲚⲀⲞⲨϪⲀⲒ.

23 ϨⲞⲦⲀⲚ ⲆⲈ ⲈⲨϢⲀⲚⲠⲰⲦ ⲚⲤⲰⲦⲚ ϨⲚ ⲦⲈⲒⲠⲞⲖⲒⲤ ⲠⲰⲦ ⲈϨⲢⲀⲒ ⲈⲔⲈⲞⲨⲈⲒ. ϨⲀⲘⲎⲚ ⲄⲀⲢ ϮϪⲰ ⲘⲘⲞⲤ ⲚⲎⲦⲚ ϪⲈ ⲚⲚⲈⲦⲚϪⲰⲔ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲚⲘⲠⲞⲖⲒⲤ ⲘⲠⲒⲤⲢⲀⲎⲖ ⲘⲠⲈⲠϢⲎⲢⲈ ⲘⲠⲢⲰⲘⲈ ⲈⲒ.

24 ⲘⲚⲤⲂⲞⲨⲒ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲈϤⲞ ⲚⲚⲞϬ ⲈⲠⲈϤⲤⲀϨ. ⲞⲨⲦⲈ ⲘⲚ ϨⲘϨⲀⲖ ⲈϤϪⲞⲤⲈ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲈⲠⲈϤϪⲞⲈⲒⲤ.

25 ϨⲰ ⲈⲠⲈⲤⲂⲞⲨⲒ ϪⲈ ⲈϤⲈϢⲰⲠⲈ ⲚⲐⲈ ⲘⲠⲈϤⲤⲀϨ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲠϨⲘϨⲀⲖ ϪⲈ ⲈϤⲈϢⲰⲠⲈ ⲚⲐⲈ ⲘⲠⲈϤϪⲞⲈⲒⲤ. ⲈϢϪⲈ ⲀⲨⲘⲞⲨⲦⲈ ⲈⲠϪⲞⲈⲒⲤ ϪⲈ ⲂⲈⲈⲖⲌⲈⲂⲞⲨⲖ ⲠⲞⲤⲞ ⲘⲀⲖⲖⲞⲚ ⲚⲈϤⲢⲘⲚⲎⲒ.

26 ⲘⲠⲢⲢϨⲞⲦⲈ ϬⲈ ϨⲎⲦⲞⲨ. ⲘⲚ ⲖⲀⲀⲨ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲈϤϨⲞⲂⲤ ⲚⲤⲈⲚⲀϬⲞⲖⲠϤ ⲀⲚ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲈϤϨⲎⲠ ⲈⲚϤⲚⲀⲞⲨⲰⲚϨ ⲀⲚ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ.

27 ⲠⲈϮϪⲰ ⲘⲘⲞϤ ⲚⲎⲦⲚ ϨⲘ ⲠⲔⲀⲔⲈ ⲀϪⲒϤ ϨⲘ ⲠⲞⲨⲞⲈⲒⲚ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲠⲈⲦⲈⲦⲚⲤⲰⲦⲘ ⲈⲢⲞϤ ϨⲘ ⲠⲈⲦⲚⲘⲀⲀϪⲈ ⲦⲀϢⲈⲞⲈⲒϢ ⲘⲘⲞϤ ϨⲒϪⲚ ⲚϪⲈⲚⲈⲠⲰⲢ.

28 ⲘⲠⲢⲢϨⲞⲦⲈ ϨⲎⲦⲞⲨ ⲚⲚⲈⲦⲚⲀⲘⲞⲨⲞⲨⲦ ⲘⲠⲈⲦⲚⲤⲰⲘⲀ. ⲈⲘⲚϬⲞⲘ ⲆⲈ ⲘⲘⲞⲞⲨ ⲈⲘⲞⲨⲞⲨⲦ ⲚⲦⲈⲦⲚⲮⲨⲬⲎ. ⲀⲢⲒϨⲞⲦⲈ ⲆⲈ ⲚϨⲞⲨⲞ ϨⲎⲦϤ ⲘⲠⲈⲦⲈⲞⲨⲚϬⲞⲘ ⲘⲘⲞϤ ⲈⲦⲀⲔⲞ ⲚⲦⲈⲦⲚⲮⲨⲬⲎ ⲘⲚ ⲠⲈⲦⲚⲤⲰⲘⲀ ϨⲢⲀⲒ ϨⲚ ⲦⲄⲈϨⲈⲚⲚⲀ.

29 ⲘⲎ ϪⲀϪ ⲤⲚⲀⲨ ⲚⲤⲈϮ ⲘⲘⲞⲞⲨ ⲀⲚ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ϨⲀ ⲞⲨϨⲞⲂⲞⲖⲞⲤ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲞⲨⲀ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲚϨⲎⲦⲞⲨ ⲚⲚⲈϤϨⲈ ⲈϨⲢⲀⲒ ⲈϪⲘ ⲠⲔⲀϨ ⲀϪⲘⲠⲈⲦⲚⲈⲒⲰⲦ ⲈⲦϨⲚ ⲘⲠⲎⲨⲈ.

30 ⲚⲔⲈⲂⲰ ⲆⲈ ⲚⲦⲈⲦⲚⲀⲠⲈ ⲎⲠ ⲦⲎⲢⲞⲨ.

31 ⲘⲠⲢⲢϨⲞⲦⲈ ϬⲈ ϨⲎⲦⲞⲨ ⲚⲦⲰⲦⲚ ⲦⲈⲦⲚϢⲞⲂⲈ ⲈϨⲀϨ ⲚϪⲀϪ.

32 ⲞⲨⲞⲚ ϬⲈ ⲚⲒⲘ ⲈⲦⲚⲀϨⲞⲘⲞⲖⲞⲄⲈⲒ ⲚϨⲎⲦ ⲘⲠⲈⲘⲦⲞ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲚⲚⲈⲢⲰⲘⲈ ϮⲚⲀϨⲞⲘⲞⲖⲞⲄⲈⲒ ϨⲰ ⲚϨⲎⲦϤ ⲘⲠⲈⲘⲦⲞ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲘⲠⲀⲈⲒⲰⲦ ⲈⲦϨⲚ ⲘⲠⲎⲨⲈ.

33 ⲠⲈⲦⲚⲀⲀⲠⲀⲢⲚⲀ ⲆⲈ ⲘⲘⲞⲒ ⲘⲠⲈⲘⲦⲞ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲚⲚⲈⲢⲰⲘⲈ. ϮⲚⲀⲀⲠⲀⲢⲚⲀ ϨⲰ ⲘⲘⲞϤ ⲘⲠⲈⲘⲦⲞ ⲈⲂⲞⲖ ⲘⲠⲀⲈⲒⲰⲦ ⲈⲦϨⲚ ⲘⲠⲎⲨⲈ.

34 ⲘⲠⲢⲰϢ ϪⲈ ⲚⲦⲀⲒⲈⲒ ⲈⲚⲞⲨϪⲈ ⲚⲞⲨⲈⲒⲢⲎⲚⲎ ⲈϨⲢⲀⲒ ⲈϪⲘ ⲠⲔⲀϨ. ⲚⲦⲀⲒⲈⲒ ⲀⲚ ⲈⲚⲞⲨϪⲈ ⲚⲞⲨⲈⲒⲢⲎⲚⲎ. ⲀⲖⲖⲀ ⲈⲚⲞⲨϪⲈ ⲚⲞⲨⲤⲎϤⲈ.

35 ⲚⲦⲀⲒⲈⲒ ⲄⲀⲢ ⲈⲠⲰⲢϪ ⲚⲞⲨⲢⲰⲘⲈ ⲈⲠⲈϤⲈⲒⲰⲦ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲞⲨϢⲈⲈⲢⲈ ⲈⲦⲈⲤⲘⲀⲀⲨ ⲀⲨⲰ ⲞⲨϢⲈⲖⲈⲈⲦ ⲈⲦⲈⲤϢⲰⲘⲈ.

36 ⲚϪⲀϪⲈ ⲘⲠⲢⲰⲘⲈ ⲚⲈ ⲚⲈϤⲢⲘⲚⲎⲒ.

37 ⲠⲈⲦⲘⲈ ⲚⲈⲒⲰⲦ ⲎⲘⲀⲀⲨ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲈⲈⲢⲞⲒ ⲚϤⲘⲠϢⲀ ⲘⲘⲞⲒ ⲀⲚ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲠⲈⲦⲘⲈ ⲚϢⲎⲢⲈ ϨⲒϢⲈⲈⲢⲈ ⲈϨⲞⲨⲈⲈⲢⲞⲒ ⲚϤⲘⲠϢⲀ ⲘⲘⲞⲒ ⲀⲚ.

38 ⲀⲨⲰ ⲠⲈⲦⲈⲚϤⲚⲀϤⲒ ⲀⲚ ⲘⲠⲈϤⲤⲦⲀⲨⲢⲞⲤ ⲚϤⲞⲨⲀϨϤ ⲚⲤⲰⲒ ⲚϤⲘⲠϢⲀ ⲘⲘⲞⲒ ⲀⲚ.

39 ⲠⲈⲚⲦⲀϤϨⲈ ⲈⲦⲈϤⲮⲨⲬⲎ ϤⲚⲀⲤⲞⲢⲘⲈⲤ. ⲀⲨⲰ ⲠⲈⲚⲦⲀϤⲤⲰⲢⲘ ⲚⲦⲈϤⲮⲨⲬⲎ ⲈⲦⲂⲎⲎⲦ ϤⲚⲀϨⲈ ⲈⲢⲞⲤ.

365. We may gather from this that rich people arrive in heaven just as much as poor people do, one as easily as the other. The reason people believe that it is easy for the poor and hard for the rich is that the Word is misunderstood when it talks about the rich and the poor. In the spiritual meaning of the Word, "the rich" means people who are amply supplied with understandings of what is true and good, that is, people in the church where the Word is. "The poor" means people who lack these understandings but who long for them, or people outside the church, where the Word is not found.

[2] The rich person dressed in purple and fine linen who was cast into hell means the Jewish nation. Because they had the Word and were therefore amply supplied with understandings of what is good and true, they are called "rich." The garments of purple actually mean understandings of what is good, and the fine linen means understandings of what is true. 1 The poor person who was lying in the gateway and who longed to feast on the crumbs that were falling from the rich person's table, who was carried up into heaven by angels, means the non-Jews who did not have understandings of what is good and true but who still longed for them (Luke 16:19, 31).

The rich who were invited to the great feast but who excused themselves also mean the Jewish nation, and the poor who were brought in to replace them mean the non-Jews who were outside the church (Luke 12:16-24, 14:16-24).

[3] We need also to explain who are meant by the rich of whom the Lord said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God" (Matthew 19:24). "The rich person" here means the rich in both senses, natural and spiritual. Rich people in the natural sense are people who have abundant wealth and set their hearts on it, while in a spiritual sense they are people who are amply supplied with insights and knowledge (for these are spiritual wealth) and who want to use them to get themselves into heavenly and ecclesiastical circles by their own intellect. Since this is contrary to the divine design, it says that it is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle. On this level of meaning, a camel means our cognitive and informational level in general, and the eye of a needle means spiritual truth. 2

Nowadays people do not know that this is the meaning of the camel and the eye of a needle because there has not yet been any access to the knowledge that teaches what is meant spiritually by the things that the Word says literally. There is spiritual meaning in the details of the Word, and natural meaning as well; because the Word was written in pure correspondences of natural realities with spiritual ones in order to effect a union of heaven and the world, or of angels with us, once the direct union had ceased. We can see from this exactly who are meant by the rich in the Word.

[4] We may gather from a number of passages that on the spiritual level "the rich" in the Word refers to people who enjoy insights into what is good and true and that wealth means those insights themselves, which are spiritual riches: see Isaiah 10:12-14; 30:6-7; 45:3, Jeremiah 17:3; 47:7 [Jeremiah 48:7?], Jeremiah 50:36-37; 51:13, Daniel 5:2-4, Ezekiel 26:7, 12; 27:1-36; Zechariah 9:3-4; Psalms 45:12; Hosea 12:9; Revelation 3:17-18, Luke 14:33, and elsewhere. On the poor in the spiritual sense as people who do not have insights into what is good and true but who long for them, see Matthew 11:5; Luke 6:20-21; 14:21; Isaiah 14:30; 29:19; 41:17-18; Zephaniah 3:12, 18 [13]. 3219. When angels are engaged in discussion about thoughts and ideas, and about influx, birds are seen at the same time in the world of spirits - the forms which the birds take being determined by the subject under discussion. This explains why birds in the Word mean rational concepts or things comprising thought, 40, 745, 776, 991. On one occasion birds came into view, and I saw that one was dark and ugly, two fine and beautiful. When I saw them, behold! certain spirits were there who then descended on me so violently as to send a tremor into my sinews and bones. I supposed that then, as had happened several times before, evil spirits were assailing me in an attempt to destroy me; but that was not so. When the tremor ceased and the spirits who had descended on me stopped moving, I spoke to them asking what it was all about. They said that they had fallen from a certain angelic community in which discussion was taking place about thoughts and influx, and that they had been of the opinion that the things which comprise thought flow in from without, that is to say, by way of the external senses, as is the appearance. But the angelic community in which they were present were of the opinion that it flowed from within. And because they themselves had been governed by falsity they had fallen from there. No one had cast them down, for angels do not cast anyone down from among themselves. It was owing to the falsity reigning in them that they had fallen from there. This had been the reason why it had happened. From this I was given to know that discussion in heaven about thoughts and influx is represented by birds - the discussion of those in whom falsity reigns by dark and ugly birds, but that of those who are governed by truth by fine and beautiful birds. I was at the same time told that all the ideas comprising thought enter into it from within, not from without, even though those ideas seem to do so. I was also told that it is contrary to order for what is posterior to flow into what is prior, or what is grosser into what is purer, and so for body to flow into soul.
