¹ And Jehovah spoke to^▵ Moses, saying,

² Send for thyself men^◦, and they will explore the land of Canaan, which I^◦ am giving to the sons of Israel; one man^◦, one man^◦ for each tribe of his father you shall Send, every one a chief among^◦ them.

³ And Moses by^◦ the mouth of Jehovah sent them from the wilderness of Paran; all those^◦ men^◦ were heads of the sons of Israel.

⁴ And these were their names; of^◦ the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

⁵ Of^◦ the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

⁶ Of^◦ the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

⁷ Of^◦ the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

⁸ Of^◦ the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

⁹ Of^◦ the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

¹⁰ Of^◦ the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

¹¹ Of^◦ the tribe of Joseph, of^◦ the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

¹² Of^◦ the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

¹³ Of^◦ the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

¹⁴ Of^◦ the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

¹⁵ Of^◦ the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

¹⁶ These are the names of the men^◦ who Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua^*.

¹⁷ And Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, and said to^▵ them, Go· you ·up this way into the south, and go·​·up·​·to the mountain;

¹⁸ and see the land, what it^◦ is, and the people who dwells upon it, whether it^◦ be firm or slack, few or many;

¹⁹ and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it^◦ be good or evil; and what cities they be that they^◦ dwell in, whether in camps, or in fortresses;

²⁰ and what the land is, whether it^◦ be with·​·oil or lean, whether there be^◦ wood in it, or not^◦. And make· yourselves ·firm, and take of the fruit of the land. And the days were the days of the firstfruits of the grapes.

²¹ And they went·​·up, and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin even·​·to Rehob, to come·​·into Ḥamath.

²² And they went·​·up by the south, and came even·​·to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, born of Anak, were there. And Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

²³ And they came to^◦ the brook of Eshcol, and cut·​·off from thence a sprig and one cluster of grapes, and they bore it between two on^◦ a pole^*; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

²⁴ That^◦ place was called the brook Eshcol^*, on account^◦ of the cluster of grapes which the sons of Israel cut·​·off from thence.

²⁵ And they returned from exploring the land at the end of forty days.

²⁶ And they went and came to^▵ Moses, and to^▵ Aaron, and to^▵ all the congregation of the sons of Israel, to^▵ the wilderness of Paran, toward Kadesh; and returned with word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

²⁷ And they described^◦ it to him, and said, We came to^▵ the land whither thou didst send us, and it^◦ even flows with milk and honey; and this is her fruit.

²⁸ Nonetheless, the people are strong dwelling in the land, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and also we saw the children of Anak there.

²⁹ Amalek dwells in the land of the south; and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by^◦ the sea, and by^◦ the side^* of the Jordan.

³⁰ And Caleb made the people keep·​·silent before Moses, and said, Going·​·up let us go·​·up, and possess it; for prevailing^◦ we will prevail^◦ against^▵ it.

³¹ But the men^◦ who went·​·up with him said, We be· not ·able to go·​·up against^▵ the people; for they are stronger^* than we.

³² And they brought·​·out an evil·​·report of the land which they had explored to^▵ the sons of Israel, saying, The land, which we have passed·​·through to explore it, it^◦ is a land that eats·​·up those dwelling·​·in her; and all the people that we saw in the midst of it are men^◦ of measure.

³³ And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who are from the Nephilim; and we were in our own eyes as grasshoppers, and so we were in their eyes.

¹ And the Philistines gathered their camps to the battle, and they were gathered at Socoh, which is in Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.

² And Saul and the men^◦ of Israel were gathered and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set· the battle ·in·​·array to meet the Philistines.

³ And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, and a ravine was between them.

⁴ And there went·​·out a man^◦, a champion, from the camp of the Philistines, his name was Goliath of Gath, he was six cubits and a span tall.

⁵ And a helmet of bronze was on his head, and he^◦ was clothed with a shirion^* of mail^◦*; and the weight of the shirion was five thousand shekels of bronze.

⁶ And greaves of bronze were on his feet, and a javelin of bronze between his shoulders^◦.

⁷ And the wood of his spear was as a beam^◦ of a weaver; and the blade of his spear was of six hundred shekels of iron. And he who was bearing the buckler walked before him.

⁸ And he stood and called unto^▵ the battle array of Israel, and said unto them, Why have you gone·​·out to set· the battle ·in·​·array? Am not I^▵ the Philistine and you^◦, servants to Saul? Choose a man^◦ for you, and let him come·​·down to^▵ me.

⁹ If he be·​·able to fight with me and to smite me, then will we be your servants; but if I^◦ prevail^◦ against him and smite him, then shall you be our servants, and serve us.

¹⁰ And the Philistine said, I^◦ have·​·reproached the battle array of Israel this day; give me a man^◦ and let us fight together.

¹¹ And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were·​·dismayed and feared exceedingly.

¹² And David was the son of a man^◦, an Ephrathite; this man was from Bethlehem of Judah, and his name was Jesse; and he had^◦ eight sons; and in the days of Saul the man^◦ was·​·old, coming among^◦ men^◦.

¹³ And they went^◦, the three eldest sons of Jesse, going after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons that went into the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and the second, Abinadab, and the third, Shammah.

¹⁴ And David was the youngest^◦; and the three eldest went^◦ after Saul.

¹⁵ But David went^◦ and returned from Saul to pasture the flock of his father at Bethlehem.

¹⁶ And the Philistine approached, getting·​·up·​·early in the morning and in the evening, and stood·​·forth forty days.

¹⁷ And Jesse said to David his son, Take now^◦ for thy brothers an ephah of this parched·​·grain, and these ten loaves of bread, and run to the camp to thy brothers;

¹⁸ and bring these ten cheeses from milk to the commander^◦ of the thousand, and take·​·note of the peace of thy brothers, and take their surety.

¹⁹ And Saul and they^◦, and every man^◦ of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

²⁰ And David got·​·up·​·early in the morning, and left^* the flock with^◦ the keeper, and carried the food and went, as^◦ Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the place of wagons; and the host was going·​·out to^▵ the battle array, and shouted in the battle.

²¹ And Israel and the Philistines set· themselves ·in·​·array, battle array to meet battle array.

²² and David abandoned the vessels from upon him in the hand of the keeper of the vessels, and ran to the battle array; and he came and asked his brothers of their peace.

²³ And he^◦ was speaking with them, and behold, a man^◦, the champion, Goliath the Philistine was his name, from Gath, came·​·up from out of the battle array of the Philistines, and spoke according·​·to these words; and David heard.

²⁴ And all the men^◦ of Israel, when they saw the man^◦, fled before him and feared exceedingly.

²⁵ And a man^◦ of Israel said, Have you seen this man^◦ coming·​·up? for to reproach Israel he is coming·​·up. And it shall be, that the man^◦ who smites him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make the house of his father free in Israel.

²⁶ And David said to^▵ the men^◦ standing with him, saying, What shall be done to the man^◦ that smites this Philistine, and removes the reproach from upon Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should reproach the battle array of the living God?

²⁷ And according·​·to this word, the people said to him, saying, Thus shall it be done to the man^◦ that smites him.

²⁸ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to^▵ the men^◦; and Eliab’s anger was·​·fierce against David, and he said, Why camest· thou ·down hither? and with whom hast thou abandoned that small flock in the wilderness? I^◦ know thy presumptuousness and the evil of thy heart; for thou art come·​·down that thou mightest see the battle.

²⁹ And David said, What have I done now? Is there not a reason?

³⁰ And he turned·​·around from the one beside him to^▵ another next·​·to him, and said according·​·to this word, and the people returned him a word as the first word.

³¹ And the words were heard which David spoke, and they told them before Saul, and he took him.

³² And David said to^▵ Saul, Let not the heart of man fall on·​·account·​·of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

³³ And Saul said to^▵ David, Thou art· not ·able to go to^▵ this Philistine to fight with him; for thou^◦ art a lad, and he^◦ is a man^◦ of war from his youth.

³⁴ And David said to^▵ Saul, Thy servant was shepherding for my father in his flock, and there came a lion and a bear and carried an animal·​·of·​·the·​·flock from the drove.

³⁵ And I went·​·out after him, and smote him, and rescued it from his mouth; and he arose against me, and I held· his beard ·firmly, and smote him and put· him ·to·​·death.

³⁶ Thy servant smote both^◦ the lion and^◦ the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them^◦, for he has reproached the battle array of the living God.

³⁷ And David said, Jehovah, who rescued me from the hand of the lion, and from the hand of the bear, He^◦ will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to^▵ David, Go, and Jehovah be with thee.

³⁸ And Saul clothed David with his robe, and he put^◦ a helmet^◦ of bronze on his head; and clothed him with a shirion,

³⁹ and David girded his sword on his robe, and he would^◦ go, but^◦ he had not proved them. And David said to^▵ Saul, I am· not ·able to go with these, for I have not proved them. And David removed them from off himself.

⁴⁰ And he took his stick in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and set them in the shepherd’s vessel that he had^◦, and in which he collected them; and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.

⁴¹ And the Philistine went, walking and drawing·​·near to^▵ David; and the man^◦ bearing the buckler was before him.

⁴² And the Philistine looked and saw David, and he despised him, for he was a lad and ruddy, with a beautiful appearance.

⁴³ And the Philistine said unto^▵ David, Am I^▵ a dog, that thou^◦ comest to^▵ me with sticks? And the Philistine reviled David by his gods.

⁴⁴ And the Philistine said to^▵ David, Go to^▵ me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the field.

⁴⁵ And David said to^▵ the Philistine, Thou^◦ comest to^▵ me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I^▵ come to^▵ thee in the name of Jehovah of Armies, the God of the battle arrays of Israel whom thou hast reproached.

⁴⁶ This day will Jehovah shut thee up into my hand; and I will smite thee, and remove thy head from upon thee; and I will give the corpse of the camp of the Philistines This day to the fowl of the heavens and to the wild·​·animals of the earth; and all the earth shall know that there·​·is a God for Israel.

⁴⁷ And all this assembly shall know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is Jehovah’s, and He will give you into our hand.

⁴⁸ And it was, that the Philistine arose, and went and came·​·near to meet David, and David hastened and ran toward the battle array to meet the Philistine.

⁴⁹ And David put·​·forth^◦ his hand to^▵ the bag, and took thence a stone, and slung it, and smote the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth.

⁵⁰ And David prevailed over^* the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine and put· him ·to·​·death; and there was no sword in the hand of David.

⁵¹ And David ran and stood on the Philistine, and took his sword and drew^▵ it from its sheath, and put· him ·to·​·death and cut·​·off his head with it. And the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, and they fled.

⁵² And the men^◦ of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to^◦ the valley^◦ and to^◦ the gates of Ekron. And the slain of the Philistines fell by the way to Sharaim and even·​·to Gath and even·​·to Ekron.

⁵³ And the sons of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they pillaged their camps.

⁵⁴ And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; and his arms he put in his tent.

⁵⁵ And when Saul saw David go·​·out to meet the Philistine, he said to^▵ Abner the commander^◦ of the army, Abner, whose son is this lad? And Abner said, As thy soul lives, O king, if only I knew.

⁵⁶ And the king said, Ask thou^◦ whose son this adolescent is.

⁵⁷ And as David returned from smiting the Philistine, Abner took him in before the face of Saul, and the head of the Philistine was in his hand.

⁵⁸ And Saul said unto^▵ him, Whose son art thou^◦, lad? And David said, The son of thy servant Jesse, the Bethlehemite.
