2 και ισχυσεν χειρ μαδιαμ επι ισραηλ και εποιησαν εαυτοις οι υιοι ισραηλ απο προσωπου μαδιαμ τας τρυμαλιας τας εν τοις ορεσιν και τα σπηλαια και τα κρεμαστα

3 και εγενετο εαν εσπειραν οι υιοι ισραηλ και ανεβαιναν μαδιαμ και αμαληκ και οι υιοι ανατολων συνανεβαινον αυτοις

4 και παρενεβαλον εις αυτους και κατεφθειραν τους καρπους αυτων εως ελθειν εις γαζαν και ου κατελιπον υποστασιν ζωης εν τη γη ισραηλ ουδε εν τοις ποιμνιοις ταυρον και ονον

5 οτι αυτοι και αι κτησεις αυτων ανεβαινον και αι σκηναι αυτων παρεγινοντο καθως ακρις εις πληθος και αυτοις και τοις καμηλοις αυτων ουκ ην αριθμος και ηρχοντο εις την γην ισραηλ και διεφθειρον αυτην

6 και επτωχευσεν ισραηλ σφοδρα απο προσωπου μαδιαμ και εβοησαν οι υιοι ισραηλ προς κυριον

7 απο προσωπου μαδιαμ

8 και εξαπεστειλεν κυριος ανδρα προφητην προς τους υιους ισραηλ και ειπεν αυτοις ταδε λεγει κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ εγω ειμι ος ανηγαγον υμας εκ γης αιγυπτου και εξηγαγον υμας εξ οικου δουλειας υμων

9 και ερρυσαμην υμας εκ χειρος αιγυπτου και εκ χειρος παντων των θλιβοντων υμας και εξεβαλον αυτους εκ προσωπου υμων και εδωκα υμιν την γην αυτων

10 και ειπα υμιν εγω κυριος ο θεος υμων ου φοβηθησεσθε τους θεους του αμορραιου εν οις υμεις καθησεσθε εν τη γη αυτων και ουκ εισηκουσατε της φωνης μου

11 και ηλθεν αγγελος κυριου και εκαθισεν υπο την τερεμινθον την εν εφραθα την ιωας πατρος του εσδρι και γεδεων υιος αυτου ραβδιζων σιτον εν ληνω εις εκφυγειν απο προσωπου του μαδιαμ

12 και ωφθη αυτω ο αγγελος κυριου και ειπεν προς αυτον κυριος μετα σου ισχυρος των δυναμεων

13 και ειπεν προς αυτον γεδεων εν εμοι κυριε μου και ει εστιν κυριος μεθ' ημων εις τι ευρεν ημας τα κακα ταυτα και που εστιν παντα τα θαυμασια αυτου α διηγησαντο ημιν οι πατερες ημων λεγοντες μη ουχι εξ αιγυπτου ανηγαγεν ημας κυριος και νυν εξερριψεν ημας και εδωκεν ημας εν χειρι μαδιαμ

14 και επεστρεψεν προς αυτον ο αγγελος κυριου και ειπεν πορευου εν ισχυι σου ταυτη και σωσεις τον ισραηλ εκ χειρος μαδιαμ ιδου εξαπεστειλα σε

15 και ειπεν προς αυτον γεδεων εν εμοι κυριε μου εν τινι σωσω τον ισραηλ ιδου η χιλιας μου ησθενησεν εν μανασση και εγω ειμι ο μικροτερος εν οικω πατρος μου

16 και ειπεν προς αυτον ο αγγελος κυριου κυριος εσται μετα σου και παταξεις την μαδιαμ ωσει ανδρα ενα

17 και ειπεν προς αυτον γεδεων ει δε ευρον ελεος εν οφθαλμοις σου και ποιησεις μοι σημερον παν ο τι ελαλησας μετ' εμου

18 μη χωρισθης εντευθεν εως του ελθειν με προς σε και εξοισω την θυσιαν και θησω ενωπιον σου και ειπεν εγω ειμι καθιομαι εως του επιστρεψαι σε

19 και γεδεων εισηλθεν και εποιησεν εριφον αιγων και οιφι αλευρου αζυμα και τα κρεα εθηκεν εν τω κοφινω και τον ζωμον εβαλεν εν τη χυτρα και εξηνεγκεν αυτα προς αυτον υπο την τερεμινθον και προσηγγισεν

20 και ειπεν προς αυτον ο αγγελος του θεου λαβε τα κρεα και τα αζυμα και θες προς την πετραν εκεινην και τον ζωμον εχομενα εκχεε και εποιησεν ουτως

21 και εξετεινεν ο αγγελος κυριου το ακρον της ραβδου της εν χειρι αυτου και ηψατο των κρεων και των αζυμων και ανεβη πυρ εκ της πετρας και κατεφαγεν τα κρεα και τους αζυμους και ο αγγελος κυριου επορευθη απο οφθαλμων αυτου

22 και ειδεν γεδεων οτι αγγελος κυριου ουτος εστιν και ειπεν γεδεων α α κυριε μου κυριε οτι ειδον αγγελον κυριου προσωπον προς προσωπον

23 και ειπεν αυτω κυριος ειρηνη σοι μη φοβου ου μη αποθανης

24 και ωκοδομησεν εκει γεδεων θυσιαστηριον τω κυριω και επεκαλεσεν αυτω ειρηνη κυριου εως της ημερας ταυτης ετι αυτου οντος εν εφραθα πατρος του εσδρι

25 και εγενετο εν τη νυκτι εκεινη και ειπεν αυτω κυριος λαβε τον μοσχον τον ταυρον ος εστιν τω πατρι σου και μοσχον δευτερον επταετη και καθελεις το θυσιαστηριον του βααλ ο εστιν τω πατρι σου και το αλσος το επ' αυτο ολεθρευσεις

26 και οικοδομησεις θυσιαστηριον κυριω τω θεω σου επι κορυφην του μαουεκ τουτου εν τη παραταξει και λημψη τον μοσχον τον δευτερον και ανοισεις ολοκαυτωμα εν τοις ξυλοις του αλσους ου εξολεθρευσεις

27 και ελαβεν γεδεων δεκα ανδρας απο των δουλων εαυτου και εποιησεν ον τροπον ελαλησεν προς αυτον κυριος και εγενηθη ως εφοβηθη τον οικον του πατρος αυτου και τους ανδρας της πολεως του ποιησαι ημερας και εποιησεν νυκτος

28 και ωρθρισαν οι ανδρες της πολεως το πρωι και ιδου καθηρητο το θυσιαστηριον του βααλ και το αλσος το επ' αυτω ωλεθρευτο και ειδαν τον μοσχον τον δευτερον ον ανηνεγκεν επι το θυσιαστηριον το ωκοδομημενον

29 και ειπεν ανηρ προς τον πλησιον αυτου τις εποιησεν το ρημα τουτο και επεζητησαν και ηρευνησαν και εγνωσαν οτι γεδεων υιος ιωας εποιησεν το ρημα τουτο

30 και ειπον οι ανδρες της πολεως προς ιωας εξενεγκε τον υιον σου και αποθανετω οτι καθειλεν το θυσιαστηριον του βααλ και οτι ωλεθρευσεν το αλσος το επ' αυτω

31 και ειπεν ιωας τοις ανδρασιν πασιν οι επανεστησαν αυτω μη υμεις νυν δικαζεσθε υπερ του βααλ η υμεις σωσετε αυτον ος εαν δικασηται αυτω θανατωθητω εως πρωι ει θεος εστιν δικαζεσθω αυτω οτι καθειλεν το θυσιαστηριον αυτου

32 και εκαλεσεν αυτο εν τη ημερα εκεινη ιαρβααλ λεγων δικασασθω εν αυτω ο βααλ οτι καθηρεθη το θυσιαστηριον αυτου

33 και πασα μαδιαμ και αμαληκ και υιοι ανατολων συνηχθησαν επι το αυτο και παρενεβαλον εν κοιλαδι εζερεελ

34 και πνευμα κυριου ενεδυναμωσεν τον γεδεων και εσαλπισεν εν κερατινη και εφοβηθη αβιεζερ οπισω αυτου

35 και αγγελους απεστειλεν εις παντα μανασση και εν ασηρ και εν ζαβουλων και νεφθαλι και ανεβη εις συναντησιν αυτων

36 και ειπεν γεδεων προς τον θεον ει συ σωζεις εν χειρι μου τον ισραηλ καθως ελαλησας

37 ιδου εγω τιθημι τον ποκον του εριου εν τη αλωνι εαν δροσος γενηται επι τον ποκον μονον και επι πασαν την γην ξηρασια γνωσομαι οτι σωσεις εν χειρι μου τον ισραηλ καθως ελαλησας

38 και εγενετο ουτως και ωρθρισεν τη επαυριον και εξεπιασεν τον ποκον και εσταξεν δροσος απο του ποκου πληρης λεκανη υδατος

39 και ειπεν γεδεων προς τον θεον μη δη οργισθητω ο θυμος σου εν εμοι και λαλησω ετι απαξ πειρασω δε και γε ετι απαξ εν τω ποκω και γενεσθω η ξηρασια επι τον ποκον μονον και επι πασαν την γην γενηθητω δροσος

40 και εποιησεν ουτως ο θεος εν τη νυκτι εκεινη και εγενετο ξηρασια επι τον ποκον μονον και επι πασαν την γην εγενηθη δροσος

3928. 'And she called his name Naphtali' means the essential nature of it, that is to say, of the temptation in which one overcomes and also of the resistance offered by the natural man. This is clear from the meaning of 'name' and of 'calling the name' as the essential nature, dealt with in 144, 145, 1754, 1896, 2009, 2724, 3421. The particular nature is that which is meant by 'Naphtali', for the name Naphtali is derived from the word 'wrestlings'. And for the same reason 'Naphtali' represents this second general truth of the Church. Temptation is the means by which the internal man is joined to the external, for they are at variance with each other but are made to agree and to correspond by means of temptations. The external man is indeed such that of itself it does not desire anything except bodily and worldly things; these are the delights of the natural man's life. But the internal man - when opened towards heaven and desiring the things of heaven, as is the case with those who are able to be regenerated - takes delight in heavenly things. And when a person undergoes temptations these two types of delight conflict with each other. The person is not directly aware of the conflict, because he is not aware of what heavenly delight is and of what hellish delight is, let alone that they are so utterly contrary to each other. But celestial angels cannot be present at all with a person in his bodily and worldly delight until this has been made subservient, that is to say, until bodily and worldly delight is no longer regarded as an end in itself but something which is meant to be subservient to heavenly delight, as shown above in 3913. Once this has been achieved the angels are able to reside with that person in both; but in this case his delight becomes blessedness, and at length happiness in the next life.

[2] Anyone who believes that the delight of the natural man prior to regeneration is not hell-like, and that devilish spirits are not in possession there, is much mistaken. He is unaware of what the situation is with man - that prior to regeneration genii and spirits from hell have possession of his natural man, no matter how much he seems to himself to be like any other person, and also that he is able to participate with everybody else in what is holy and to reason about the truths and goods of faith, indeed is able to believe that he has become strong in these. If this person does not feel within himself some measure of affection for what is right and fair in his daily work, and for what is good and true in society and in life, let him recognize that his kind of delight in things is the kind that exists with those in hell, for his delight entails no other love than self-love and love of the world. And when these constitute his delight no charity or any faith is present within it. The only means that will weaken and dispel this delight once it has become predominant is the affirmation and acknowledgement of the holiness of faith and of the good of life, which is the first means meant, as shown above, by Dan, and after this by temptation, which is the second means and is meant by Naphtali; for this second means follows the other. Indeed people who do not affirm and acknowledge the goodness and the truth which constitute faith and charity are unable to enter any conflict brought about by temptation as there is nothing within to oppose the evil and falsity towards which natural delight gravitates.

[3] In other places in the Word where Naphtali is mentioned he means a person's state following temptations, as in the prophecy of Jacob, who by then was Israel,

Naphtali is a hind let loose, giving beautiful words. Genesis 49:21.

'A hind let loose' stands for the affection for natural truth in a state that is free, which arises following temptation. This state is also what is at stake within temptations, which are meant by 'Naphtali', for the battle fought in temptations is a struggle for freedom. Likewise in Moses' prophecy,

To Naphtali he said, Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of Jehovah, will possess the west and the south. Deuteronomy 33:23.

For the representations of Jacob's sons, and of the tribes, depend on the order in which they are mentioned, 3862. And in the prophecy of Deborah and Barak,

Zebulun is a people that consigned its soul to die, as did Naphtali, on the heights of the field. Judges 5:18.

This too refers in the internal sense to the conflicts brought about by temptations, and to a person's presence among those who do not fear anything evil because they are rooted in forms of truth and good, meant by 'being on the heights of the field'.

1 There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

2 Yahweh appeared to him, and said, "Don't go down into Egypt. Live in the land I will tell you about.

3 Live in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you. For to you, and to your seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

4 I will multiply your seed as the stars of the sky, and will give to your seed all these lands. In your seed will all the nations of the earth be blessed,

5 because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my requirements, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."

6 Isaac lived in Gerar.

7 The men of the place asked him about his wife. He said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "My wife," lest, he thought, "the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to look at."

8 It happened, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was caressing Rebekah, his wife.

9 Abimelech called Isaac, and said, "Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, 'She is my sister?'" Isaac said to him, "Because I said, 'Lest I die because of her.'"

10 Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!"

11 Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, "He who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death."

12 Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. Yahweh blessed him.

13 The man grew great, and grew more and more until he became very great.

14 He had possessions of flocks, possessions of herds, and a great household. The Philistines envied him.

15 Now all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth.

16 Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go from us, for you are much mightier than we."

17 Isaac departed from there, encamped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there.

18 Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father. For the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

19 Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

20 The herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." He called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

21 They dug another well, and they argued over that, also. He called its name Sitnah.

22 He left that place, and dug another well. They didn't argue over that one. He called it Rehoboth. He said, "For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land."

23 He went up from there to Beersheba.

24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night, and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father. Don't be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for my servant Abraham's sake."

25 He built an altar there, and called on the name of Yahweh, and pitched his tent there. There Isaac's servants dug a well.

26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his army.

27 Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?"

28 They said, "We saw plainly that Yahweh was with you. We said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, even between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you,

29 that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.' You are now the blessed of Yahweh."

30 He made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

31 They rose up some time in the morning, and swore one to another. Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

32 It happened the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."

33 He called it Shibah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

35 They grieved Isaac's and Rebekah's spirits.
