¹ א How^◦ does the city sit alone, that had many people! How has she become as a widow! She that was great^◦ among^◦ the nations, and princess among^◦ the provinces, how has she become for a tribute!

² ב Weeping she weeps in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; there is none to comfort her from all her lovers; all her companions have acted·​·treacherously with her, they have become enemies to her.

³ ג Judah is gone·​·into·​·exile because of affliction, and because of much servitude; she^◦ dwells among^◦ the nations, she finds no^◦ rest; all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.

⁴ ד The ways of Zion are mourning, because none come to the solemn·​·occasions; all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are made·​·sorrowful, and there is for her bitterness.

⁵ ה Her adversaries have become the head, her enemies are·​·tranquil; for Jehovah has made· her ·sorrowful for^▵ the multitude of her transgressions; her babes have gone^◦ into captivity before the adversary.

⁶ ו And from the daughter of Zion all her honor is gone·​·out; her princes are become as stags that find no^◦ pasture, and they are gone without^▫ power before the pursuer.

⁷ ז Jerusalem remembered, in the days of her affliction and of her being·​·dominated, all her desired things that were from the ancient days; when her people fell into the hand of the adversary, and none did help her, the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her Sabbath.

⁸ ח Jerusalem has sinned a sin; therefore she is isolated^*; all who honored^◦ her consider her worthless, for they have seen her nakedness: she^◦ even sighs, and turns·​·back backward.

⁹ ט Her uncleanness is in her skirts; she remembers not her last times; therefore she came·​·down in wonders; she had no comfort. O Jehovah, see my affliction; for the enemy has magnified himself.

¹⁰ י The adversary has spread his hand on all her desired things; for she has seen the nations coming·​·into her sanctuary, whom Thou didst command that they should not come into the assembly to Thee.

¹¹ כ All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their desired things for food to return the soul; see, O Jehovah, and look; for I have become worthless.

¹² ל Is it nothing to you, all who pass·​·by the way? Look, and see if there·​·be any pain as my pain, which is enacted on me, with which Jehovah has made· me ·sorrowful in the day of His fierce anger.

¹³ מ From on·​·high has He sent fire into my bones, and it has had·​·dominion over them; He has spread a net for my feet, He has returned me backward: He has given me desolation and infirmity all the day.

¹⁴ נ The yoke of my transgressions is bound by His hand; they are wreathed, and come·​·up upon my neck: He has made my power to stumble, the Lord has given me into their hands, from whom I am· not ·able to rise·​·up.

¹⁵ ס The Lord has trampled·​·down all my powerful·​·ones in my midst^◦; He has called the congregation^◦ against me to break my young·​·men: the Lord has trodden the wine·​·press^◦ for the virgin daughter of Judah.

¹⁶ ע For^▵ these things I^◦ weep; my eye, my eye runs down with water, because^◦ the comforter that should turn·​·back my soul is far from me; my sons are desolate, because^◦ the enemy prevailed.

¹⁷ פ Zion spreads her hands, and there is none to comfort her; Jehovah has commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be all around him: Jerusalem is isolated among them.

¹⁸ צ Jehovah, He^◦ is just; for I have rebelled against His mouth; hear, I pray^◦ you, all peoples, and see my pain; my virgins and my young·​·men have gone^◦ into captivity.

¹⁹ ק I called for my lovers, but they^◦ deceived me; my priests and my elders gave up the expired in the city, when^◦ they sought their food to turn·​·back their souls.

²⁰ ר See, O Jehovah, for I am·​·in·​·adversity; my bowels churn, my heart is turned within^▫ me, for rebelling I have rebelled; on the street the sword bereaves, in the houses it is as death.

²¹ ש They have heard that I^◦ sigh; there is none to comfort me: all my enemies have heard of my evil state; they have·​·joy that Thou^◦ hast done it: Thou wilt bring the day that Thou hast called, and they shall be like^▵ me.

²² ת Let all their evil come before Thee; and act unto them, as^◦ Thou hast acted unto me for^▵ all my transgressions; for my sighings are many, and my heart is infirm.

¹ And the word of Jehovah was to^▵ me, saying,

² Son of man, thou^◦ dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, who have^◦ eyes to see, and see not; they have^◦ ears to hear, and hear not; for a rebellious house are they^◦.

³ And thou^◦ son of man, make thee vessels of exile, and exile these by·​·day before^▫ their eyes; and thou shalt exile them from thy place to^▵ another place before^▫ their eyes; perhaps they will see, but^◦ they^◦ are a rebellious house.

⁴ And thou shalt bring·​·out thy vessels by·​·day before^▫ their eyes, as vessels of exile; and thou^◦ shalt go·​·out in the evening before^▫ their eyes, as they who go·​·out into exile.

⁵ Dig·​·through for thyself into the wall^◦ before^▫ their eyes, and bring·​·out in it.

⁶ Before^▫ their eyes shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulders^◦, and bring· it ·forth in the deep·​·darkness; thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the earth: for I have given thee for a portent^* to the house of Israel.

⁷ And I did so as^◦ I was commanded; I brought·​·forth my vessels by·​·day, as vessels of exile, and in the evening I dug·​·through the wall^◦ with my hand; I brought· it ·forth in the deep·​·darkness, and I bore it upon my shoulder^◦ before^▫ their eyes.

⁸ And in the morning was the word of Jehovah unto^▵ me, saying,

⁹ Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said unto^▵ thee, What doest thou^◦?

¹⁰ Say thou unto^▵ them, Thus says the Lord Jehovih^*: This burden concerns the chief in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel, they^◦ that are among^▵ them.

¹¹ Say, I^◦ am your portent; as^◦ I have done, so shall it be done to them: into exile and into captivity they shall go.

¹² And the chief who is in the midst of them shall bear upon his shoulder^◦ in the deep·​·darkness, and shall go·​·out; they shall dig·​·through in the wall^◦ to bring·​·out thereby: he shall cover his face, so^▫ that he^◦ see not the earth with his eyes.

¹³ And My net will I spread on him, and he shall be caught in My hunting net; and I will bring him into Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans; but he shall not see it, though he shall·​·die there.

¹⁴ And I will disperse toward^◦ every wind all that are around him to help him, and all his bands; and I will unsheathe the sword after them.

¹⁵ And they shall know that I^◦ am Jehovah, when I shall scatter them among^◦ the nations, and disperse them in the lands.

¹⁶ But I will cause to remain a number of men^◦ of them^◦ from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence; that they may recount^◦ all their abominations among^◦ the nations whither they come; and they shall know that I^◦ am Jehovah.

¹⁷ And the word of Jehovah was to^▵ me, saying,

¹⁸ Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with anxiety;

¹⁹ and say to^▵ the people of the ground, Thus says the Lord Jehovih to those who dwell in Jerusalem concerning^▵ the land of Israel: They shall eat their bread with anxiety, and drink their water with astonishment, so·​·that her land may be·​·desolate from her fullness, from the violence of all those who dwell in her.

²⁰ And the cities that are dwelt·​·in shall be made·​·a·​·waste, and the land shall be desolate; and you shall know that I^◦ am Jehovah.

²¹ And the word of Jehovah was unto^▵ me, saying,

²² son of man, what is this proverb for you concerning the ground of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision perishes?

²³ Therefore say to^▵ them, Thus says the Lord Jehovih: I will make this enunciation to cease, and they shall no^◦ more^◦ enunciate it in Israel; but^◦ speak unto^▵ them, The days are·​·near, and the word of every vision.

²⁴ For there shall be no^◦ more^◦ any vain vision or^◦ flattering divination in the midst of the house of Israel.

²⁵ For I^◦ am Jehovah; I shall speak the word that I shall speak, and it shall be done; it shall not be drawn·​·out any·​·more; for in your days, O rebellious house, will I speak the word, and will do it, says^◦ the Lord Jehovih.

²⁶ And the word of Jehovah was to^▵ me, saying,

²⁷ Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he^◦ beholds is for many days to come, and he^◦ prophesies of^◦ the times that are far·​·off.

²⁸ Therefore say unto^▵ them, Thus says the Lord Jehovih: There shall not any of My words be drawn·​·out any·​·more, but the word which I have spoken shall be done, says^◦ the Lord Jehovih.
