¹ And the sons of Israel trespassed a trespass in what was devoted^*, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zeraḥ, of the tribe of Judah, took from what was devoted; and the anger of Jehovah was·​·fierce against^◦ the sons of Israel.

² And Joshua sent men^▵ from Jericho to Ai, which is by Beth-aven from the east of Bethel, and he said to^▵ them, saying, Go·​·up and spy·​·out the land. And the men^▵ went·​·up and spied·​·out Ai.

³ And they returned to^▵ Joshua, and said to^▵ him, Let not all the people go·​·up, let about^◦ two·​·thousand men^◦ or about^◦ three thousand men^◦ go·​·up and smite Ai; make not all the people toil thither; for they^◦ are few.

⁴ And there went·​·up of the people thither about^◦ three thousand men^◦; and they fled before the men^◦ of Ai.

⁵ And the men^◦ of Ai smote of them^◦ about^◦ thirty and six men^◦; and they pursued them before the gate even·​·to Shebarim, and smote them in the going·​·down: and the heart of the people melted and became water.

⁶ And Joshua rent his raiment and fell on his face to^▫ the earth before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he^◦ and the elders of Israel; and they brought·​·up dust on their head.

⁷ And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord Jehovih^*, why hast Thou made this people crossing to cross·​·over the Jordan, to give us into the hand of the Amorite, to make· us ·perish? And would·​·that we had been·​·content and dwelt across the Jordan!

⁸ In·​·me^* Lord, what shall I say after that Israel turns the back^◦ before his enemies!

⁹ And the Canaanite and all they who dwell·​·in the land shall hear and will surround us and cut·​·off our name from the land; and what wilt Thou do for Thy great name?

¹⁰ And Jehovah said to^▵ Joshua, Rise·​·up; why is this that thou^◦ hast fallen on thy face?

¹¹ Israel has sinned and has even passed·​·by My covenant which I commanded them; and they have even taken of the devoted·​·thing and have even stolen, and even deceived^◦, and have even set it into their vessels.

¹² And the sons of Israel are· not ·able to rise·​·up before their enemies; they turn^◦ their back^◦ before their enemies for they have become as a doomed·​·thing^*. I will not be with you again if you do not blot·​·out the doomed·​·thing from among you.

¹³ Arise, sanctify the people, and say, sanctify yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says Jehovah God of Israel, There is a devoted·​·thing among thee, O Israel, thou canst not rise·​·up before thine enemies until you remove the devoted·​·thing from among you.

¹⁴ And in the morning you shall be offered according·​·to^▵ your tribes^◦; and it shall be that the tribe^◦ which Jehovah shall take^◦ shall offer themselves according·​·to^▵ the families; and the family which Jehovah shall take^◦ shall offer themselves according·​·to^▵ the houses; and the house which Jehovah shall take^◦ shall offer themselves according·​·to^▵ the mighty·​·men.

¹⁵ And it shall be that he that is taken^◦ with the devoted·​·thing shall be burned·​·up with fire, he and all that he has; for he has transgressed^◦ the covenant of Jehovah, and because he has done folly in Israel.

¹⁶ And Joshua got·​·up·​·early in the morning, and offered Israel according·​·to^▵ their tribes^◦; and the tribe^◦ of Judah was taken^◦.

¹⁷ And he offered the family of Judah; and He^* took^◦ the family of the Zarhite; and he offered the family of the Zarhite according·​·to^▵ their mighty·​·men and He took^◦ Zabdi.

¹⁸ And he offered his house according·​·to^▵ the mighty·​·men and He took^◦ Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zeraḥ of the tribe of Judah.

¹⁹ And Joshua said to^▵ Achan, My son, set, I pray^◦ thee, glory for Jehovah the God of Israel, and give confession to Him; and tell, I pray^◦ thee, what thou hast done, conceal^◦ it not from me.

²⁰ And Achan answered Joshua and said, Truly I^▵ have sinned against^▵ Jehovah, the God of Israel, and as this and as this^* have I done:

²¹ And I saw among the spoil one good mantle^◦ of Shinar and two·​·hundred shekels of silver and one wedge^* of gold of fifty shekels weight, and I coveted them and took them; and behold, they are concealed in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

²² And Joshua sent messengers and they ran to^▫ the tent; and behold, it was concealed in his tent, and the silver under it.

²³ And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them in to^▵ Joshua and to^▵ all the sons of Israel, and poured them out before Jehovah.

²⁴ And Joshua, and all Israel with^▵ him, took Achan, the son of Zeraḥ, and the silver, and the mantle^◦ and the wedge of gold, and his sons and his daughters, and his ox and his donkey, and his flock and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought· them ·up to the valley of Achor.

²⁵ And Joshua said, With what hast thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee on^◦ this day. And all Israel stoned^▵ him with stones; and they burned· them ·up with fire, and stoned^◦ them with stones.

²⁶ And they raised·​·up over him a great heap of stones to^◦ this day; and Jehovah turned·​·back from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore he called the name of that^◦ place, the Valley of Achor, to^◦ this day.

¹ And Jehovah spoke to^▵ Moses, saying,

² Command the sons of Israel, that they send·​·out from the camp every leper, and everyone that has·​·a·​·flow, and everyone who is unclean on account of a soul^*;

³ from male even·​·to female you shall send·​·out, to^▵ outside the camp you shall send them; that they defile not their camp, in the midst of which I^◦ abide^◦.

⁴ And the sons of Israel did so, and sent· them ·out, to^▵ outside the camp; as^◦ Jehovah spoke to^▵ Moses, so did the sons of Israel.

⁵ And Jehovah spoke to^▵ Moses, saying,

⁶ Speak to^▵ the sons of Israel, When^◦ a man^◦ or woman shall do any sin of man, trespassing for a trespass against^◦ Jehovah, and that^◦ soul be·​·guilty;

⁷ and they shall confess their sin which they have done; and he shall return his guilt with its principal^◦, and add onto^◦ it the fifth part of it, and give it to him against whom he is held·​·as·​·guilty.

⁸ But if the man^◦ have^◦ no redeemer to turn·​·back the guilt to^▵ him, let the guilt be turned·​·back to Jehovah, to the priest; apart from the ram of the atonements, by which an atonement· shall be ·made for him.

⁹ And every uplifting^◦ of^◦ all the holy things of the sons of Israel, which they offer to the priest, shall be his.

¹⁰ And every man’s^◦ holy things shall be his; whatever^▵ any man^◦ gives to the priest, it shall be his.

¹¹ And Jehovah spoke to^▵ Moses, saying,

¹² Speak to^▵ the sons of Israel, and say to^▵ them, to each^◦ man^◦*, If^▫ his wife deviate, and trespass a trespass against^◦ him,

¹³ and a man^◦ lie with^◦ her, lying·​·down with seed, and it be hidden^◦ from the eyes of her husband^◦, and be hidden, and she^◦ be defiled, and there be no witness against^◦ her, and she^◦ be not caught;

¹⁴ and the spirit of jealousy pass over him, and he be·​·jealous of his wife, and she^◦ be defiled; or the spirit of jealousy pass over him, and he be·​·jealous of his wife, and she^◦ be not defiled;

¹⁵ then shall the man^◦ bring his wife to^▵ the priest, and he shall bring her offering for^▵ her, the tenth part of the ephah of barley meal; he shall pour not oil on it, nor put^◦ frankincense on it; for it^◦ is a gift·​·offering of jealousy, a gift·​·offering of remembrance, causing iniquity to be remembered.

¹⁶ And the priest shall bring· her ·near, and stand her before Jehovah;

¹⁷ and the priest shall take holy water in a pottery^◦ vessel; and of the dust that is on^◦ the floor of the Habitation the priest shall take, and put^◦ it into^▵ the water;

¹⁸ and the priest shall stand the woman before Jehovah, and expose the head of the woman, and put^◦ the gift·​·offering of the remembrance on her palms, it^◦ is the gift·​·offering of jealousy; and in the hand of the priest shall be the bitter water which causes the curse.

¹⁹ And the priest shall make her a promise, and say to^▵ the woman, If a man^◦ has not lain with^◦ thee, and if thou hast not deviated to uncleanness with another instead of thy husband^◦, thou shalt be·​·innocent from the bitter water of these curses;

²⁰ but if^▫ thou^◦ hast deviated to another instead of thy husband^◦, and if^▫ thou be defiled, and a man^◦ has lain with thee besides thy husband^◦;

²¹ and the priest shall promise the woman with the promise of the oath, and the priest shall say to the woman, May Jehovah put^◦ thee for an oath and for a curse^* in the midst of thy people, when Jehovah causes^* thy thigh to fall in^*, and thy belly to swell;

²² and the waters that cause these curses shall come into thy bowels, to make the belly swell, and the thigh to fall in; and the woman shall say, Amen, amen.

²³ And the priest shall write these oaths in a book, and he shall wipe· them ·away in^▵ the bitter waters;

²⁴ and he shall give· the woman the bitter water ·to·​·drink^◦ that causes the curse; and the water that causes the curse shall come·​·into her, to become bitter.

²⁵ And the priest shall take the gift·​·offering of jealousy out·​·of the woman’s hand, and shall wave the gift·​·offering before Jehovah, and offer it at^▵ the altar;

²⁶ and the priest shall take·​·a·​·handful from the gift·​·offering, a memorial of it, and burn· it ·as·​·incense upon the altar, and after this he shall give· the woman the water ·to·​·drink^◦.

²⁷ And he shall give· her a ·drink^◦ of the water, and it shall be, if she be defiled, and have trespassed a trespass against her husband^◦, that the water that causes the curse shall come into her as bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fall in; and the woman shall be for an oath among her people.

²⁸ And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean, then she^◦ shall be·​·innocent, and shall be sown with seed.

²⁹ This is the law of jealousies, when^▵ a wife has deviated to another instead of her husband^◦, and is defiled;

³⁰ or a man^◦, when^▵ the spirit of jealousy pass upon him, and he be·​·jealous over his wife, and shall stand the woman before Jehovah, and the priest shall make upon her all this law.

³¹ And the man^◦ shall be·​·innocent from iniquity, and this^◦ woman shall bear her iniquity.
