Kings 1

And King David was··old, and came into days; and they covered him with garments but he was· not ·warm.

And his servants said to him, Let them seek for my lord the king a damsel, a virgin; and let her stand before the king, and let her be familiar to him; and let her lie in thy bosom, and my lord the king will be··warm.

And they sought for a beautiful damsel in all the border of Israel; and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

And the damsel was beautiful, even exceedingly; and she was familiar to the king and ministered to him; but the king knew her not.

And Adonijah the son of Haggith* lifted··himself· ·up, saying, I will be··king; and he made ready for himself a chariot and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

And his father had not caused· him ·grief during his days by saying, Wherefore hast thou done so? And he was also very good of form; and she* gave··birth to him after Absalom was born.

And his words were with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest, and they helped, following after Adonijah.

But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei and Rei, and the heroes whom David had, were not with Adonijah.

And Adonijah sacrificed flock and herd and fatling by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he called all his brothers, the sons of the king, and all the men of Judah, the servants of the king.

But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the heroes, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

And Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become··king, and our lord David knows it not?

But now, go, let me, I pray, counsel a counsel to thee, and cause· thy soul ·to··escape, and the soul of thy son Solomon.

Go, and come··in to King David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord the king, promise to thy maidservant, saying that Solomon thy son shall be··king after me, and he shall sit on my throne? Wherefore then has Adonijah become··king?

Behold, while thou yet speakest there with the king, I will also come··in after thee, and will fill thy words.

And Bathsheba came··in to the king into the chamber; and the king was· very ·old; and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king.

And Bathsheba bent··herself and bowed··down to the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou have?

And she said unto him, My lord, thou didst promise by Jehovah thy God unto thy maidservant, that Solomon thy son shall be··king after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.

And now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not.

and he has sacrificed ox and fatling and flock in multitude, and has called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the prince of the army; but Solomon thy servant he has not called.

And thou, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, to tell unto them, who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

And it shall be, when my lord the king shall lie··down with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be sinners.

And, behold, while she yet spoke with the king, Nathan the prophet came··in.

And they told the king, saying, Behold, Nathan the prophet. And he came··in before the king and bowed··down to the king, upon his face to the earth.

And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall be··king after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?

For he is gone··down today, and has sacrificed ox and fatling and flock in multitude, and has called all the sons of the king, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and they say, Live, O King Adonijah!

And me, me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Solomon thy servant he has not called.

Is this word from my lord the king, and hast thou not made··known unto thy servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?

And King David answered and said, Call ye to me Bathsheba. And she came··in before the king, and stood before the king.

And the king promised and said, Jehovah lives, who has ransomed my soul out of all adversity:

even as I promised unto thee by Jehovah, the God of Israel, saying, that Solomon thy son shall be··king after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in· my ·stead; even so will I do this day.

And Bathsheba bent her face to the earth, and bowed··down to the king, and said, My lord King David, live to eternity.

And King David said, Call to me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came··in before the king.

And the king said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon the she-mule which I have, and bring· him ·down to Gihon.

And let Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, anoint him there for king over Israel; and sound ye with the shophar*, and say, Let· King Solomon ·live!

And you shall come··up after him, and he shall come··in and sit upon my throne; and he shall be··king in· my ·stead; and him have I commanded to be monarch over Israel and over Judah.

And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, Amen; let Jehovah, the God of my lord the king, say so.

And as Jehovah has been with my lord the king, so be He with Solomon, and make· his throne ·greater than the throne of my lord king David.

And Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, went··down, and caused Solomon to ride upon the she··mule of King David, and caused him to go to Gihon.

And Zadok the priest took the horn of oil out··of the Tent, and anointed Solomon, and they sounded with the shophar, and all the people said, Let· King Solomon ·live!

And all the people went··up after him, and the people fluted with flutes, and were glad with great gladness, and the earth split··open with their voice.

And Adonijah heard, and all those called that were with him; and they completed eating. And Joab heard the voice of the shophar, and said, Wherefore is· the voice of the city so ·tumultuous?

He was yet speaking, and, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came··in; and Adonijah said, Come··in; for thou art a man of valor and bringest· good ·tidings.

And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Indeed our lord, King David has made· Solomon ·king.

And the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride upon the she··mule of the king.

And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him as king in Gihon; and they have come··up from thence with gladness, and the city makes··a··noise. That is the voice that you have heard.

And also Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom.

And also the servants of the king have come··in to bless our lord King David, saying, Thy God make· the name of Solomon ·better than thy name, and make· his throne ·greater than thy throne; and the king bowed· himself ·down on the bed.

And also so said the king, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who has given this day one to sit on my throne, and my eyes seeing it.

And all those that were called by Adonijah were··frightened, and rose··up, and went every man his way.

And Adonijah feared before Solomon; and he arose and went, and took··hold of the horns of the Altar.

And it was··told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; and, behold, he has seized the horns of the altar, saying, Let King Solomon promise unto me as this day, that he will· not ·put··to··death his servant with the sword.

And Solomon said, If he be a son of valor, there shall not a hair of him fall to the earth; but if evil be··found in him, then he shall··die.

And King Solomon sent and they brought· him ·down from the altar, and he came··in and bowed··down to King Solomon; and Solomon said unto him, Go to thy house.
