1 Le troisième mois après leur sortie du pays d'Egypte, les enfants d'Israël arrivèrent ce jour-là au désert de Sinaï.

2 Etant partis de Rephidim, ils arrivèrent au désert de Sinaï, et ils campèrent dans le désert; Israël campa là, vis-à-vis de la montagne.

3 Moïse monta vers Dieu: et l'Eternel l'appela du haut de la montagne, en disant: Tu parleras ainsi à la maison de Jacob, et tu diras aux enfants d'Israël:

4 Vous avez vu ce que j'ai fait à l'Egypte, et comment je vous ai portés sur des ailes d'aigle et amenés vers moi.

5 Maintenant, si vous écoutez ma voix, et si vous gardez mon alliance, vous m'appartiendrez entre tous les peuples, car toute la terre est à moi;

6 vous serez pour moi un royaume de sacrificateurs et une nation sainte. Voilà les paroles que tu diras aux enfants d'Israël.

7 Moïse vint appeler les anciens du peuple, et il mit devant eux toutes ces paroles, comme l'Eternel le lui avait ordonné.

8 Le peuple tout entier répondit: Nous ferons tout ce que l'Eternel a dit. Moïse rapporta les paroles du peuple à l'Eternel.

9 Et l'Eternel dit à Moïse: Voici, je viendrai vers toi dans une épaisse nuée, afin que le peuple entende quand je te parlerai, et qu'il ait toujours confiance en toi. Moïse rapporta les paroles du peuple à l'Eternel.

10 Et l'Eternel dit à Moïse: Va vers le peuple; sanctifie-les aujourd'hui et demain, qu'ils lavent leurs vêtements.

11 Qu'ils soient prêts pour le troisième jour; car le troisième jour l'Eternel descendra, aux yeux de tout le peuple, sur la montagne de Sinaï.

12 Tu fixeras au peuple des limites tout à l'entour, et tu diras: Gardez-vous de monter sur la montagne, ou d'en toucher le bord. Quiconque touchera la montagne sera puni de mort.

13 On ne mettra pas la main sur lui, mais on le lapidera, ou on le percera de flèches: animal ou homme, il ne vivra point. Quand la trompette sonnera, ils s'avanceront près de la montagne.

14 Moïse descendit de la montagne vers le peuple; il sanctifia le peuple, et ils lavèrent leurs vêtements.

15 Et il dit au peuple: Soyez prêts dans trois jours; ne vous approchez d'aucune femme.

16 Le troisième jour au matin, il y eut des tonnerres, des éclairs, et une épaisse nuée sur la montagne; le son de la trompette retentit fortement; et tout le peuple qui était dans le camp fut saisi d'épouvante.

17 Moïse fit sortir le peuple du camp, à la rencontre de Dieu; et ils se placèrent au bas de la montagne.

18 La montagne de Sinaï était toute en fumée, parce que l'Eternel y était descendu au milieu du feu; cette fumée s'élevait comme la fumée d'une fournaise, et toute la montagne tremblait avec violence.

19 Le son de la trompette retentissait de plus en plus fortement. Moïse parlait, et Dieu lui répondait à haute voix.

20 Ainsi l'Eternel descendit sur la montagne de Sinaï, sur le sommet de la montagne; l'Eternel appela Moïse sur le sommet de la montagne. Et Moïse monta.

21 L'Eternel dit à Moïse: Descends, fais au peuple la défense expresse de se précipiter vers L'Eternel, pour regarder, de peur qu'un grand nombre d'entre eux ne périssent.

22 Que les sacrificateurs, qui s'approchent de l'Eternel, se sanctifient aussi, de peur que l'Eternel ne les frappe de mort.

23 Moïse dit à l'Eternel: Le peuple ne pourra pas monter sur la montagne de Sinaï, car tu nous en as fait la défense expresse, en disant: Fixe des limites autour de la montagne, et sanctifie-la.

24 L'Eternel lui dit: Va, descends; tu monteras ensuite avec Aaron; mais que les sacrificateurs et le peuple ne se précipitent point pour monter vers L'Eternel, de peur qu'il ne les frappe de mort.

25 Moïse descendit vers le peuple, et lui dit ces choses.

194. And thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. That this signifies man's ignorance of that time, and of his state then, is evident from the signification of hour, as being the time when man is to die, and also his state at the time; and from the signification of not knowing it, as being ignorant. It is said, what hour I will come upon thee, namely, as a thief; and in the sense of the letter is hereby meant that the Lord would thus come, but in the spiritual sense it is meant that evils and falsities would steal the knowledges which they have from the Word; for, in the sense of the letter of the Word, it is attributed to Jehovah, or the Lord, that He does evil, but, in the spiritual sense it is meant that He does evil to no one, but that man does evil to himself (as may be seen, Arcana Coelestia 2447, 5798, 6071, 6991, 6997, 7533, 7632, 7643, 7877, 7679, 7710, 7926, 8227, 8228, 8284, 8483, 8632, 9010, 9128, 9306, 10431).

[2] The reason why hour also signifies state is, because in the Word all times, as a day, a week, a month, a year, an age, signify states of life, and hence hour has a similar signification. (The cause of this may be seen in the work, Heaven and Hell 162-169, where time in heaven is treated of.)

But because hour signifies both time and state, therefore, where hour is mentioned in the Word it may to some extent be known that something other than time is signified by it.

In Matthew:

A householder hired labourers into his vineyard, who, laboured from the third hour, the sixth, the ninth, and the eleventh, and received an equal reward (Matthew 20:1-17).

By these hours in the world are meant times, but in heaven states of the life, because there are no hours in heaven, as times there are not measurable, and divided into days, and these into hours, as in the world, therefore instead of these they there perceive the states of the life of those who die, whether old, young, youths or children, who have alike procured to themselves spiritual life. To labour in the vineyard, denotes the procuring of spiritual life by means of knowledges of good and truth from the Word applied to the uses of life. (That a vineyard in the Word signifies the spiritual church, and spiritual life pertaining to man, may be seen, Arcana Coelestia 3220, 9139.) By the third, the sixth, and the ninth hours similar states of life are signified; for all numbers in the Word are significative, and those numbers have a similar signification. Three signifies a full state, or what is complete even to the end (see n. 2788, 4495, 7715, 8347, 9825). The like is signified by six and nine; but the number eleven signifies a state not yet full, but yet a state of reception, such as that of well-disposed children and infants. The twelfth hour up to which they all laboured, signifies truths and goods in their fulness (see n. 577, 2089, 2129, 2130, 3272, 3858, 3913. That all numbers in the Word are significative, see n. 4495, 4670, 5265, 6175, 9488, 9659, 10217, 10253; and that multiplied numbers have a similar signification to the simple numbers from which they arise by multiplication, hence three, six, and nine have a similar signification, see n. 5291, 5335, 5708, 7973).

[3] Since twelve signifies truths and goods in their fulness, and thus a state of light or of man's intelligence therefrom, the Lord says,

"Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he stumbleth not" (John 11:9).

In other places, also by hours are signified states of life, as in the Apocalypse:

"The four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, to slay the third part of men" (9:15).

By the times here mentioned are meant states of evil in men, as will be seen when we come to the explanation of those words.

From these considerations it is now evident that by, Thou shalt not know in what hour I will come upon thee, is meant man's ignorance not only of the time of his death, but also of the state of his life at that time, which state remains to eternity; for according to the quality of the state of man's past life even to the end of it, such he remains to eternity.

[4] Similar things are frequently said by the Lord in the Evangelists, as in Matthew:

"Ye know not in what hour your Lord doth come; be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man shall come" (24:42, 44).

Again:

"The lord of the servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of" (24:50).

And again:

"Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man shall come" (25:13).

It must be known that a man remains to eternity such as the quality of his whole life has been to the end, and not at all such as he is at the hour of death; for repentance then in the case of the evil is of no avail, but with the good it confirms the state.

161. To commit whoredom, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. That this signifies falsifications of truth and adulterations of good is evident from the signification of committing whoredom, as being to falsify truths (concerning which see above, n. 141), and from the signification of eating things sacrificed to idols, as being to appropriate evil (concerning which see also above, n. 141). The reason why to adulterate good is also here signified is that the appropriations of evil, in things belonging to the church, are adulterations of good; for the goods thereof are applied to evils and thus are adulterated. For example, the goods of the Israelitish church were signified by the altar, the sacrifices, and their eating together of the things sacrificed; when these things were offered to Baal, then goods were applied to evils, not to mention other similar instances. The case is the same in the church where things are not representative, if the Word is applied to confirm the evils of the love of self; as is done by the Popish nation to acquire dominion over the whole heaven. That by committing whoredom, and eating things sacrificed to idols is signified to falsify truths, and adulterate goods, is also clear from the circumstance that the deeds of Jezebel are by one expression called whoredoms and witchcrafts, in the second book of Kings:

"When Jehoram saw Jehu, he said, Is it peace, Jehu? and he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?" (9:22).
