^{1 2} When^◦ there shall arise in the midst^◦ of thee a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he give to^▵ thee a sign or a miracle,

^{2 3} and the sign or the miracle come to pass, whereof he spoke to thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast· not ·known, and let us serve them;

^{3 4} thou shalt not hearken to the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams; for Jehovah your God tempts you, to know whether you love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

^{4 5} You shall walk^◦ after Jehovah your God, and Him you shall fear, and keep His commandments, and obey His voice, and Him you shall serve, and stick to Him.

^{5 6} And that^◦ prophet, or that^◦ dreamer of a dream, shall be put·​·to·​·death; for he has spoken to turn· you ·aside against Jehovah your God, who brought· you ·out from the land of Egypt, and redeemed^◦ you from the house of servitude^*, to impel thee from the way in which Jehovah thy God commanded thee to go. And thou shalt sweep·​·away the evil from among thee.

^{6 7} If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy companion, who is as thy soul, incite thee hiddenly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou^◦, nor thy fathers;

^{7 8} from the gods of the people which are all around you, near to thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth and to^◦ the other end of the earth;

^{8 9} for him thou shalt not be·​·willing, and thou shalt not hearken to him; and thine eye shall not spare him, and thou^◦ shalt not have pity, and thou shalt not cover him up;

^{9 10} but killing thou shalt kill him; thy hand shall be first upon him to·​·put· him ·to·​·death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

^{10 11} And thou shalt stone^◦ him with stones, that he die; for he has sought to impel thee away from Jehovah thy God, who brought· thee ·out from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude^*.

^{11 12} And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any thing of evil as this is among you.

^{12 13} If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which Jehovah thy God has given thee to dwell there, saying,

^{13 14} Certain men^◦, sons of Belial, have gone·​·out from among you, and have compelled those dwelling·​·in their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known;

^{14 15} then shalt thou inquire, and search·​·out, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is worked among you;

^{15 16} smiting thou shalt smite those who dwell in that^◦ city with the mouth of the sword, dooming it, and all who are in her, and her beasts, with the mouth of the sword.

^{16 17} And thou shalt bring·​·together all the spoil of it, into the midst of her avenue, and shalt burn·​·up the city with fire, and all the spoil of it, all of it, for Jehovah thy God; and it shall be a mound of eternity; it shall not be built any more.

^{17 18} And there shall not stick anything of the devoted·​·thing^* to thy hand; so·​·that Jehovah may turn·​·back from the fierceness of His anger, and give thee compassion, and have·​·compassion on thee, and cause thee to multiply, as^◦ He has promised to thy fathers;

^{18 19} when^◦ thou shalt obey the voice of Jehovah thy God, to keep all His commandments which I command thee today, to do what is upright in the eyes of Jehovah thy God.

¹ And this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments, which Jehovah your God commanded to teach you, for you to do them in the land whither you cross·​·over to possess it;

² that thou mightest fear Jehovah thy God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I^▵ command thee, thou^◦, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

³ And hear, O Israel, and observe to do, that it may be·​·well for thee, and that you may multiply exceedingly, as Jehovah God of thy fathers has spoken to thee, in the land that flows with milk and honey.

⁴ Hear, O Israel; Jehovah is our God; Jehovah is one.

⁵ And thou shalt love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy forces^◦.

⁶ And these words, which I command thee today, shall be upon thy heart;

⁷ and thou shalt teach them diligently^* to thy sons, and shalt speak of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest^◦ in the way, and when thou liest·​·down, and when thou risest·​·up.

⁸ And thou shalt tie them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

⁹ And thou shalt write them on the doorposts of thy house, and on^◦ thy gates.

¹⁰ And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God shall have brought thee into the land which He promised to thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and good cities, which thou buildedst not,

¹¹ and houses full of every good, which thou didst not fill, and cisterns hewed·​·out, which thou hewedst· not ·out, vineyards and olive·​·trees, which thou didst not plant; and thou shalt have eaten and be satisfied;

¹² then take·​·heed for thyself lest thou forget Jehovah, Who brought· thee ·out from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude^*.

¹³ Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God, and serve Him, and shalt promise by His name.

¹⁴ You shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples which are all around you

¹⁵ (for Jehovah thy God is a jealous God^◦ among you), lest the anger of Jehovah thy God be·​·fierce against thee, and blot· thee ·out from upon the face of the ground.

¹⁶ You shall not tempt Jehovah your God, as^◦ you tempted Him in Massah^*.

¹⁷ Keeping you shall keep the commandments of Jehovah your God, and His testimonies, and His statutes, which He has commanded thee.

¹⁸ And thou shalt do that which is upright and good in the eyes of Jehovah, that it may be·​·well with thee, and that thou mayest go·​·in and possess the good land which Jehovah promised to thy fathers,

¹⁹ to push·​·out all thine enemies from before thee, as Jehovah has spoken.

²⁰ And when thy son asks thee tomorrow, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Jehovah our God has commanded you?

²¹ Then thou shalt say to thy son, We were Pharaoh’s servants in Egypt; and Jehovah brought us out of Egypt with a firm hand;

²² and Jehovah gave signs and miracles, great and evil, on^◦ Egypt, on^◦ Pharaoh, and on^◦ all his house, before our eyes;

²³ and He brought· us ·out from thence, that He might bring· us ·in, to give us the land which He promised to our fathers.

²⁴ And Jehovah commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Jehovah our God, for our good all the days, to keep· us ·alive, as it is this day.

²⁵ And it shall be our justice, if we observe to do all these commandments before Jehovah our God, as He has commanded us.
