1 Y cuando vio Balaam que parecía bien al SEÑOR que él bendijese a Israel, no fue, como la primera y segunda vez, a encuentro de los agüeros, sino que puso su rostro hacia el desierto;

2 y alzando sus ojos, vio a Israel alojado por sus tribus; y el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre él.

3 Entonces tomó su parábola, y dijo: dijo Balaam hijo de Beor, y dijo el varón de ojos abiertos;

4 dijo el que oyó los dichos de Dios, el que vio la visión del Omnipotente; caído, mas abiertos los ojos:

5 ¡Cuán hermosas son tus tiendas, oh Jacob, tus habitaciones, oh Israel!

6 Como arroyos están extendidas, como huertos junto al río, como árboles de sándalo plantados por el SEÑOR, como cedros junto a las aguas.

7 De sus ramos destilarán aguas, y su simiente será en muchas aguas; y su rey se ensalzará más que Agag, y su reino será ensalzado.

8 Dios lo sacó de Egipto; tiene fuerzas como el unicornio; comerá a los gentiles sus enemigos, y desmenuzará sus huesos, y los asaeteará con sus saetas.

9 Se encorvará para echarse como león, y como gran león; ¿quién lo despertará? Benditos los que te bendijeren, y malditos los que te maldijeren.

10 Entonces se encendió la ira de Balac contra Balaam, y batiendo sus palmas le dijo: Para maldecir a mis enemigos te he llamado, y he aquí los has bendecido resueltamente ya tres veces.

11 Huye, por tanto, ahora a tu lugar; yo dije que te honraría, mas he aquí que el SEÑOR te ha privado de honra.

12 Y Balaam le respondió: ¿No lo declaré yo también a tus mensajeros que me enviaste, diciendo:

13 Si Balac me diese su casa llena de plata y oro, yo no podré traspasar el dicho del SEÑOR para hacer cosa buena ni mala de mi arbitrio; mas lo que el SEÑOR hablare, eso diré yo?

14 Por tanto, he aquí, yo me voy ahora a mi pueblo; ven, te indicaré lo que este pueblo ha de hacer a tu pueblo en los postrimeros días.

15 Y tomó su parábola, y dijo: dijo Balaam hijo de Beor, dijo el varón de ojos abiertos;

16 dijo el que oyó los dichos del SEÑOR, y el que sabe la ciencia del Altísimo, el que vio la visión del Omnipotente; caído, mas abiertos los ojos:

17 Lo veré, mas no ahora; lo miraré, mas no de cerca; SALDRA ESTRELLA DE JACOB, y se levantará cetro de Israel, y herirá los cantones de Moab, y destruirá a todos los hijos de Set.

18 Y será tomada Edom, será también tomada Seir por sus enemigos, e Israel se portará con valentía.

19 Y el de Jacob se enseñoreará, y destruirá de la ciudad lo que quedare.

20 Y viendo a Amalec, tomó su parábola, y dijo: Amalec, cabeza de gentiles; mas su postrimería perecerá para siempre.

21 Y viendo al ceneo, tomó su parábola, y dijo: Fuerte es tu habitación, pon en la peña tu nido;

22 porque el ceneo será echado, cuando Assur te llevará cautivo.

23 Tomó su parábola otra vez, y dijo: ¡Ay! ¿quién vivirá cuando hiciere Dios estas cosas?

24 Y vendrán navíos de la costa de Quitim, y afligirán a Assur, afligirán también a Heber; mas él también perecerá para siempre.

25 Entonces se levantó Balaam, y se fue, y volvió a su lugar; y también Balac se fue por su camino.

8273. 'Jehovah is a man of war' means that the Lord provides protection against all evils and falsities, which come from the hells. This is clear from the meaning of 'a man of war' as one who fights against falsities and evils, that is, against the hells, and overcomes them, at this point one who provides a person protection against them. For as shown already, the Lord alone fights on behalf of a person and protects him when he is under attack from the hells; He does so constantly, especially in temptations, which are spiritual conflicts. The Lord is called 'a man of war', primarily because when He was in the world He fought alone, that is, all by Himself, against the hells, which at that time were for the most part open. They were attacking and attempting to bring under their control all without exception who were entering the next life. The reason why the devil's crew, that is, the hells, were prowling around in that way then was that the Divine passing through heaven, which was the Divine Human before the Lord's Coming, was not powerful enough to oppose the evils and falsities which had increased so enormously. Therefore the Divine was pleased to take upon Himself a Human Form and make it Divine. At the same time - through the conflicts to which He allowed Himself to be subjected - He cast the devil's crew into the hells, shut them in there, and made them subject to the heavens; also at the same time He restored the heavens themselves to order. These conflicts are the primary reason for calling the Lord 'a man of war'. And after them, when He had thereby conquered the hells and made Himself righteousness, He has been called such because with Divine power He provides people protection, doing so constantly, and especially in the conflicts brought by temptations.

[2] The truth that the Lord alone, all by Himself, fought against the hells and overcame them is presented in the following way in Isaiah,

Judgement is cast away backwards, and justice stands afar off, for truth has stumbled in the street, and uprightness cannot come in; while truth has been removed, and he who retreats from evil is insane. Jehovah saw, and it was evil in His eyes that there was no judgement. And He saw that there was no man (vir), and wondered that there was no intercessor therefore His own arm brought salvation to Him, and His righteousness lifted Him up. Consequently He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon His head. Isaiah 59:14-17.

This describes conditions at that time in both worlds and declares that the Lord all by Himself, alone, re-established things that were in a state of collapse. The like is stated elsewhere in the same prophet,

Who is this who comes from Edom, with spattered clothes from Bozra, He that is glorious in His apparel, marching in the vast numbers of His strength? I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save. I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples not a man (vir) was with Me. Consequently their victory 1 has been sprinkled on My clothes. For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and the year of My redeemed had come. I had looked around, but there was no helper, and I wondered, but there was no one to uphold; therefore My own arm brought salvation to Me. Isaiah 63:1-5.

These quotations make it clear that when in the world, the Lord fought alone against the hells and overcame them.

[3] So far as conflicts with and victories over the hells are concerned, the truth is that anyone who overcomes them once does so for evermore; for through victory he gains power over them, since in the same measure he consolidates within himself, and makes his own, the good of love and the truth of faith against which the hells afterwards do not dare to attempt anything. When He was in the world the Lord allowed Himself to endure conflicts brought by temptations from all the hells, and through those conflicts He made Divine the Human within Him and at the same time reduced the hells to a state of obedience for evermore, see 1663, 1668, 1690, 1692, 1737, 1813, 1820, 2776, 2786, 2795, 2803, 2814, 2816, 4287. So it is that the Lord alone has power over the hells for ever, and with Divine power fights on behalf of a person. This now explains why the Lord is called 'a man of war' and also 'a mighty man', as again in Isaiah,

Jehovah will go forth as a mighty man, as a man of wars He will arouse zeal; He will prevail over His enemies. Isaiah 42:13.

And in David,

Who is this King of glory? Jehovah strong and a mighty man, Jehovah a mighty man of war. Who is this King of glory? Jehovah Zebaoth (Jehovah of Hosts or Armies). Psalms 24:8, 10.

[4] Wherever 'war' is mentioned in the Word, spiritual war against falsities and evils - or what amounts to the same thing, against the devil, that is, the hells - is meant in the internal sense, 1664, 2686. The wars or battles which the Lord fought against the hells are the subject in the internal sense both in the historical sections of the Word and in its prophetical parts; and no less the subject are the Lord's wars or battles fought on behalf of man. With the Ancients, with whom the Lord's Church existed, there also existed a Word, having both a historical section and a prophetical part, which is not extant at the present day. Its historical section was called The Book of the Wars of Jehovah and its prophetical part The Utterances. That Word is referred to in Moses, Numbers 21:14, 27. The fact that the expression used in Numbers 21:27 means prophetical utterances is evident from the meaning the expression is given at Numbers 23:7, 18; 24:3, 15. The Wars of Jehovah in that Word meant the Lord's battles against and His victories over the hells when He was in the world. They also meant the battles fought after that, and the everlasting victories won by Him, on behalf of man, the Church, and His kingdom. The hells desire constantly to puff themselves up, for they yearn only to dominate; but they are kept in check by the Lord alone. Their attempts to exert themselves are seen as bubbles boiling up or as a person arching his back. But every time they attempt such a thing a large number of them are cast further down.

1928. 'Near the spring on the road to Shur' means that this truth was an assemblage of things which come from facts. This is clear from the meaning of 'a spring', also from that of 'a road', as well as from the meaning of 'Shur'. 'A spring', as has been stated, means truth; 'a road' means that which leads to truth and which comes from truth, as shown already in 627; while 'Shur' means factual knowledge such as is still in the desert so to speak, that is, which has not yet acquired any life. Truths that come from facts are said to acquire life when they ally or associate themselves with truths into which the celestial element of love is flowing, the source of the actual life of truth. Real things, and thus truths, exist joined together in the way that communities in heaven are joined together, to which communities they also correspond; for interiorly man is a kind of miniature heaven. Real things, or truths, which do not exist joined together in accordance with the form which heavenly communities possess have not as yet acquired any life; for prior to this the celestial element of love from the Lord cannot fittingly flow in. They first receive life when a similar form exists on both sides, that is, when the miniature heaven in man is a corresponding image of the Grand [Man]. Prior to that nobody can be called a heaven-like man.

[2] The Lord, who from Himself was to govern the whole of heaven, imposed such order while He was in the world on the truths and goods present with His External Man, that is, with His Human Essence. But because He perceived that such order did not exist with His rational conceived first, as was stated above at verses 4 and 5, He thought about and perceived the reason why. This was that natural truths arising from facts did not as yet have any life in them, that is, that heavenly order had not been imposed on them. Furthermore truths of faith never possess any life unless a person is leading a charitable life, charity being that form from which all truths of faith flow, and that in which they inhere; and when they inhere in and flow from charity they possess life. It is in charity that life resides, never in truths devoid of charity.

[3] That 'Shur' means factual knowledge that as yet has not acquired life is clear from the meaning of this name. Shur was a desert not far from the Sea Suph, and so lay in the direction of Egypt, as is clear in Moses,

Moses made Israel journey from the Sea Suph, and they went out to the desert of Shur; from there they went three days in the desert, and did not find any water. Exodus 15:22.

That it lay in the direction of Egypt is again clear in Moses where the descendants of Ishmael are the subject,

They dwelt from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt. 1 Genesis 25:18.

And in Samuel,

Saul defeated Amalek from Havilah as you come to Shur, which is opposite Egypt'. 1 1 Samuel 15:7.

And elsewhere in 1 Samuel,

David spread out against the Geshurites, and the Gizrites, and the Amalekites, who inhabited the land from of old, as you come to Shur and as far as the land of Egypt. 1 Samuel 27:8.

These quotations show that 'Shur' means primary factual knowledge, in particular such as is still in the desert, that is, not yet joined to all the rest in accordance with the form which heavenly communities possess, for 'Egypt' which it was opposite 2 means knowledge in every sense, as shown already in 1164, 1165, 1186, 1462.
