1 הדבר אשר דבר יהוה אל־בבל אל־ארץ כשדים ביד ירמיהו הנביא׃

2 הגידו בגוים והשמיעו ושאו־נס השמיעו אל־תכחדו אמרו נלכדה בבל הביש בל חת מרדך הבישו עצביה חתו גלוליה׃

3 כי עלה עליה גוי מצפון הוא־ישית את־ארצה לשמה ולא־יהיה יושב בה מאדם ועד־בהמה נדו הלכו׃

4 בימים ההמה ובעת ההיא נאם־יהוה יבאו בני־ישראל המה ובני־יהודה יחדו הלוך ובכו ילכו ואת־יהוה אלהיהם יבקשו׃

5 ציון ישאלו דרך הנה פניהם באו ונלוו אל־יהוה ברית עולם לא תשכח׃ ס

6 צאן אבדות [כ= היה] [ק= היו] עמי רעיהם התעום הרים [כ= שובבים] [ק= שובבום] מהר אל־גבעה הלכו שכחו רבצם׃

10 והיתה כשדים לשלל כל־שלליה ישבעו נאם־יהוה׃

13 מקצף יהוה לא תשב והיתה שממה כלה כל עבר על־בבל ישם וישרק על־כל־מכותיה׃

14 ערכו על־בבל סביב כל־דרכי קשת ידו אליה אל־תחמלו אל־חץ כי ליהוה חטאה׃

15 הריעו עליה סביב נתנה ידה נפלו [כ= אשויתיה] [ק= אשיותיה] נהרסו חומותיה כי נקמת יהוה היא הנקמו בה כאשר עשתה עשו־לה׃

16 כרתו זורע מבבל ותפש מגל בעת קציר מפני חרב היונה איש אל־עמו יפנו ואיש לארצו ינסו׃ ס

17 שה פזורה ישראל אריות הדיחו הראשון אכלו מלך אשור וזה האחרון עצמו נבוכדראצר מלך בבל׃ ס

18 לכן כה־אמר יהוה צבאות אלהי ישראל הנני פקד אל־מלך בבל ואל־ארצו כאשר פקדתי אל־מלך אשור׃

19 ושבבתי את־ישראל אל־נוהו ורעה הכרמל והבשן ובהר אפרים והגלעד תשבע נפשו׃

20 בימים ההם ובעת ההיא נאם־יהוה יבקש את־עון ישראל ואיננו ואת־חטאת יהודה ולא תמצאינה כי אסלח לאשר אשאיר׃

21 על־הארץ מרתים עלה עליה ואל־יושבי פקוד חרב והחרם אחריהם נאם־יהוה ועשה ככל אשר צויתיך׃ ס

22 קול מלחמה בארץ ושבר גדול׃

23 איך נגדע וישבר פטיש כל־הארץ איך היתה לשמה בבל בגוים׃

24 יקשתי לך וגם־נלכדת בבל ואת לא ידעת נמצאת וגם־נתפשת כי ביהוה התגרית׃

25 פתח יהוה את־אוצרו ויוצא את־כלי זעמו כי־מלאכה היא לאדני יהוה צבאות בארץ כשדים׃

26 באו־לה מקץ פתחו מאבסיה סלוה כמו־ערמים והחרימוה אל־תהי־לה שארית׃

27 חרבו כל־פריה ירדו לטבח הוי עליהם כי־בא יוםם עת פקדתם׃ ס

28 קול נסים ופלטים מארץ בבל להגיד בציון את־נקמת יהוה אלהינו נקמת היכלו׃

29 השמיעו אל־בבל רבים כל־דרכי קשת חנו עליה סביב אל־יהי־[כ= זז] [ק= לה] פלטה שלמו־לה כפעלה ככל אשר עשתה עשו־לה כי אל־יהוה זדה אל־קדוש ישראל׃

30 לכן יפלו בחוריה ברחבתיה וכל־אנשי מלחמתה ידמו ביום ההוא נאם־יהוה׃ ס

31 הנני אליך זדון נאם־אדני יהוה צבאות כי בא יומך עת פקדתיך׃

32 וכשל זדון ונפל ואין לו מקים והצתי אש בעריו ואכלה כל־סביבתיו׃ ס

33 כה אמר יהוה צבאות עשוקים בני־ישראל ובני־יהודה יחדו וכל־שביהם החזיקו בם מאנו שלחם׃

34 גאלם חזק יהוה צבאות שמו ריב יריב את־ריבם למען הרגיע את־הארץ והרגיז לישבי בבל׃

35 חרב על־כשדים נאם־יהוה ואל־ישבי בבל ואל־שריה ואל־חכמיה׃

36 חרב אל־הבדים ונאלו חרב אל־גבוריה וחתו׃

37 חרב אל־סוסיו ואל־רכבו ואל־כל־הערב אשר בתוכה והיו לנשים חרב אל־אוצרתיה ובזזו׃

38 חרב אל־מימיה ויבשו כי ארץ פסלים היא ובאימים יתהללו׃

39 לכן ישבו ציים את־איים וישבו בה בנות יענה ולא־תשב עוד לנצח ולא תשכון עד־דור ודור׃

40 כמהפכת אלהים את־סדם ואת־עמרה ואת־שכניה נאם־יהוה לא־ישב שם איש ולא־יגור בה בן־אדם׃

41 הנה עם בא מצפון וגוי גדול ומלכים רבים יערו מירכתי־ארץ׃

42 קשת וכידן יחזיקו אכזרי המה ולא ירחמו קולם כים יהמה ועל־סוסים ירכבו ערוך כאיש למלחמה עליך בת־בבל׃

43 שמע מלך־בבל את־שמעם ורפו ידיו צרה החזיקתהו חיל כיולדה׃

44 הנה כאריה יעלה מגאון הירדן אל־נוה איתן כי־ארגעה [כ= ארוצם] [ק= אריצם] מעליה ומי בחור אליה אפקד כי מי כמוני ומי יועדני ומי־זה רעה אשר יעמד לפני׃

45 לכן שמעו עצת־יהוה אשר יעץ אל־בבל ומחשבותיו אשר חשב אל־ארץ כשדים אם־לא יסחבום צעירי הצאן אם־לא ישים עליהם נוה׃

46 מקול נתפשה בבל נרעשה הארץ וזעקה בגוים נשמע׃ ס

8908. 'You shall not answer as a witness of a lie against your neighbour' means that good must not be called evil, nor truth falsity, and conversely that evil must not be called good, nor falsity truth. This is clear from the meaning of 'witness of a lie' as the confirmation of falsity. For the meaning of 'witness' as confirmation, see 4197; and the meaning of 'a lie' as falsity of faith will be evident from what follows below. 'Answering against the neighbour' is speaking to someone in that manner; for 'neighbour' means any and every person, in particular everyone governed by good, and in the abstract sense good itself, 3419, 5025, 6704, 6706-6711, 6818, 8123, so that in the internal sense 'you shall not answer as the witness of a lie against your neighbour' means not saying what is false to anyone, that is, not saying that good is evil and truth is falsity, or vice versa.

[2] What this implies must be explained briefly. None who are ruled by self-love or by love of the world, that is, whose end in view is either to have high and honoured positions or to possess wealth and gain, care when they tell and persuade others that something just is unjust or something unjust is just, and by doing this behave as 'witnesses of a lie'. The reason why they are like this is that their will is in complete subjection to those loves and accompanying desires; it is completely possessed and dominated by them. At the same time the understanding, which is the other part of the mind, indeed has the ability to see what is just or unjust but has no wish to see it. For the will prevails over the understanding; it flows into and persuades it, and at length also makes it blind. Those same people possess no conscience, nor do they know that conscience consists in saying that something just is just, and for no other reason than because it is so, that is, from a love of what is just. People who are like this in the world are also like it in the next life, except for the difference that they do not then say something just is unjust. Instead they call the good of faith evil, and truth falsity, since what is just in dealings with people in the world corresponds to what is good and true in the spiritual world. This is done by them without conscience and also without any shame because it was something they had learned to do during their lifetime and grown accustomed to.

[3] Many times in the Word the expression 'a lie' is used, and wherever it occurs the falsity and evil of faith is meant in the internal sense. And 'the witness of a lie', who is also called 'the witness of violence', means confirming something false, whether before a judge, or before someone else, or before oneself by convincing oneself in one's inner thinking, as in Exodus 23:1ff; Leviticus 19:11-12ff; Deuteronomy 19:16-20. The fact that 'a lie' in the spiritual sense is the evil and falsity of faith is clear from the following places: In John,

You are from your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth because the truth is not in him. When he speaks a lie he speaks from the things that are his own, for he is the teller of a lie and the father of it. John 8:44.

Here 'a lie' stands for falsity of faith, for it refers to the unwillingness of the Jews to acknowledge the Lord. 'The devil' in the spiritual sense here is falsity, and 'the father of it' is evil; for falsity springs from evil like son from father. The falsity that is the devil's is the falsity of faith, the evil that is his is the evil of self-love and love of the world.

[4] In Isaiah,

Moab is exceedingly proud; his haughtiness, and his pride, and his anger - his lies are not firm. Isaiah 16:6.

'Lies' stands for falsities of faith, since 'Moab' is those who, ruled by the evil of self-love, therefore falsify truths, 2468, 8315. In the same prophet,

We have made a covenant with death, and with hell we have shaped a vision. We have put our trust in a lie, and we have hidden in falsity. Isaiah 28:15.

In the same prophet,

They were a rebellious people, lying sons, sons who did not wish to hear the law of Jehovah. Isaiah 30:9.

In Jeremiah,

They deceive one another, 1 and do not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak a lie Jeremiah 9:5.

In the same prophet,

Behold, I am against those that prophesy lying dreams 2 and tell them in order that they may mislead My people by their lies. Jeremiah 23:32.

In the same prophet,

O sword, [be] against the liars, that they may become foolish. Jeremiah 50:36.

In Ezekiel,

They have seen vanity and lying divination, 3 saying, Jehovah has said! when Jehovah has not sent them. Therefore thus has the Lord Jehovih said, Because you speak vanity and see a lie, therefore behold, I am against you. Ezekiel 13:6-9.

In Nahum,

Woe to the city of blood! 4 It is all full of lies and plunder. Nahum 3:1.

In Zephaniah,

The remnant of Israel will not do iniquity or speak any lie; nor will a fraudulent tongue be found in their mouth. They will feed and rest. Zephaniah 3:13.

In John,

Outside are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices a lie. Revelation 22:15.

In these as in many other places 'a lie' stands for the falsity and evil of faith.

2724. 'And there he called on the name of [Jehovah,] the God of Eternity' means worship from it. This is clear from the meaning of 'calling on the name of God' as worship, dealt with in 440. Those who belonged to the Ancient Church did not understand merely name by the word 'name' but the entire nature, see 144, 145, 340, 768, 1754, 1896, 2009. Thus by 'the name of God' they understood everything in one embrace by which God was worshipped, consequently everything of love and faith. But once the internal aspect of worship perished and only the external was left people began to understand nothing else by 'the name of God' than the name. Indeed they went so far as to worship the name itself, being quite indifferent to what the love and the faith were in which their worship was grounded. As a result of this nations began to identify themselves by the names of their gods, the Jews and Israelites setting themselves above the rest because they worshipped Jehovah. They made the utterance and the calling upon the name itself the essential feature of worship; but in fact worship of the name alone is not worship at all, for that practice may exist even among the worst of people who in worshipping the name alone become greater profaners.

[2] Now because 'the name of God' means the entirety of worship, that is, the love and faith in their entirety from which He is worshipped, it is therefore clear what is meant by hallowed be Your name - in the Lord's Prayer, Matthew 6:9, and what by the following words spoken by the Lord,

You will be hated by everyone for My name's sake. Matthew 10:22.

If two of you agree in My name on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. Where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:19-20.

He who leaves houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields, for My name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will be allotted the inheritance of eternal life. Matthew 19:29.

Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Matthew 21:9.

Jesus said, You will not see Me from now on until you say, Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord. Matthew 23:39.

You will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. Then many will stumble and betray one another, and hate one another, and all for My name's sake. 1 Matthew 24:9-10.

As many as received Him, to them He gave power to be sons of God, to those believing in His name, John 1:12.

He who does not believe is judged already because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:17-18.

Jesus said, Whatever you ask in My name, I will do it. John 14:14-15; 15:16; 16:23-24, 26-27.

Jesus said, I have manifested Your name to men. John 17:6.

Holy Father, keep them in Your name whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are one. John 17:11-12.

I made known to them Your name, and I will make known that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them. John 17:26.

That you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:31.

There are in addition very many places in the Old Testament in which the name of Jehovah and of God is not used to mean the name but love and faith in their entirety in which worship is grounded.

[3] But those who worship the name alone, without love and faith, are spoken of in Matthew as follows,

Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy through Your name, and cast out demons through Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name? But I will confess to them, I do not know you; depart from Me, you workers of iniquity. Matthew 7:22-23.

As has been stated, once the member of the Church from being internal became external, and began to make worship consist in a name alone, people no longer acknowledged one God but many. For it was a custom among the ancients to add something after the name of Jehovah and by doing that to call to mind some benefit or attribute of His, as in the present verse, 'He called on the name of [Jehovah,] the God of Eternity'. Another example occurs in the next chapter,

Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh (that is, Jehovah will see). Genesis 22:14.

And the following, among others, are further examples,

Moses built an altar and called the name of it Jehovah Nissi (that is, Jehovah is my banner). Exodus 17:15.

Gideon built an altar to Jehovah and called it [the altar] of Jehovah Shalom (that is, of peace). Judges 6:24.

It was from this custom that those who made worship consist in a name alone came to acknowledge so many gods, and also that among the gentiles, especially those in Greece and Rome, so many gods came to be acknowledged and worshipped, whereas the Ancient Church from which those attributive names derived always worshipped but one God who was revered under so many names, for the reason that by 'name' they understood the essential nature.
