1 Ed avvenne, nell’anno undecimo, nel primo giorno del mese, che la parola del Signore mi fu indirizzata, dicendo:

2 Figliuol d’uomo, perciocchè Tiro ha detto di Gerusalemme: Eia! quella che era la porta de’ popoli è ruinata, ella è rivolta a me; io mi empierò, ella è deserta;

3 perciò, così ha detto il Signore Iddio: Eccomi contro a te, o Tiro;

4 e farò salir contro a te molte genti, come il mare fa salir le sue onde. E quelle guasteranno le mura di Tiro, e diroccheranno le sue torri; ed io ne raschierò la polvere, e la renderò simile ad un sasso ignudo.

5 Ella sarà in mezzo del mare un luogo da stendervi le reti da pescare: perciocchè io ho parlato, dice il Signore Iddio; e sarà in preda alle genti.

6 E le sue città, che sono in terra ferma, saran messe a fil di spada; e conosceranno che io sono il Signore.

7 Perciocchè, così ha detto il Signore Iddio: Ecco, io fo venire di Settentrione, contro a Tiro, Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, re dei re, con cavalli, e con carri, e con cavalieri, e con raunata di gente, e molto popolo.

8 Egli metterà a fil di spada le tue città, che sono in terra ferma; e rizzerà contro a te delle bastie, e farà contro a te degli argini, e leverà contro a te lo scudo;

9 e percoterà le tue mura co’ suoi trabocchi, e diroccherà le tue torri co’ suoi picconi.

10 Cotanto sarà grande la moltitudine dei suoi cavalli, che la lor polvere ti coprirà; per lo strepito de’ cavalieri, e delle ruote, e de’ carri, le tue mura tremeranno, quando egli entrerà dentro alle tue porte, come si entra in una città sforzata.

11 Egli calcherà tutte le tue strade con le unghie de’ suoi cavalli, ucciderà il tuo popolo con la spada, e le statue della tua gloria caderanno a terra.

12 Ed essi prederanno le tue facoltà, e ruberanno le tue mercatanzie, e disfaranno le tue mura, e distruggeranno le tue belle case, e getteranno in mezzo delle acque le tue pietre, e il tuo legname, e la tua polvere.

13 Ed io farò cessar lo strepito delle tue canzoni, e il suono delle tue cetere non sarà più udito.

14 Ed io ti renderò simile ad un sasso ignudo; tu sarai un luogo da stender le reti da pescare, tu non sarai più riedificata; perciocchè io, il Signore, ho parlato, dice il Signore Iddio.

15 Così ha detto il Signore Iddio a Tiro: Le isole non tremeranno esse per lo romore della tua caduta, quando i feriti gemeranno, quando l’uccisione si farà in mezzo di te?

16 Tutti i principi del mare scenderanno anch’essi d’in su i lor troni, e torranno via i loro ammanti, e spoglieranno i lor vestimenti di ricami; si vestiranno di spaventi, sederanno sopra la terra, e tremeranno ad ogni momento, e saranno attoniti di te.

17 E prenderanno a fare un lamento di te, e ti diranno: Come sei perita, tu, che eri abitata da gente di marina, città famosa, che eri forte in mare; tu, e i tuoi abitanti, i quali si facevan temere a tutti quelli che dimoravano in te!

18 Ora le isole saranno spaventate nel giorno della tua caduta, e le isole che son nel mare saranno conturbate per la tua uscita.

19 Perciocchè, così ha detto il Signore Iddio: Quando io ti avrò renduta città deserta, come son le città disabitate; quando avrò fatto traboccar sopra te l’abisso, e le grandi acque ti avran coperta;

20 e ti avrò fatta scendere, con quelli che scendono nella fossa, al popolo antico; e ti avrò stanziata nelle più basse parti della terra, ne’ luoghi desolati ab antico, con quelli che scendono nella fossa, acciocchè tu non sii mai più abitata, allora rimetterò la gloria nella terra de’ viventi.

21 Io farò che tu non sarai altro che spaventi, e tu non sarai più; e sarai cercata, ma non sarai giammai più in perpetuo trovata, dice il Signore Iddio.

   


To many Protestant and Evangelical Italians, the Bibles translated by Giovanni Diodati are an important part of their history. Diodati’s first Italian Bible edition was printed in 1607, and his second in 1641. He died in 1649. Throughout the 1800s two editions of Diodati’s text were printed by the British Foreign Bible Society. This is the more recent 1894 edition, translated by Claudiana.

243. And white garments, that thou mayest be clothed. That this signifies genuine truths and intelligence therefrom, is evident from the signification of white garments, as being genuine truths; for garments signify truths (as may be seen above, n. 195), and white signifies what is genuine, and is said of truths (as may be seen also above, n. 196); and from the signification of to clothe as being to procure for oneself intelligence therefrom, for by means of genuine truths all intelligence is obtained; for the human understanding is formed to receive truths, therefore such as are the truths of which it is formed, such is its quality. It is believed that it is a matter of the understanding to be able to reason from thought and to speak from falsities, and to confirm them by many arguments; but this is not understanding, it is only a faculty given to man with the memory to which it is adjoined, and of which it is an activity. Nevertheless, the understanding is thereby born and formed, in proportion as man receives truths from affection; but to receive genuine truths from affection is not possible for any man, except from the Lord alone, because they are from Him. Consequently, to receive understanding, or to become intelligent, is imparted to man by the Lord alone, and to every one who applies himself to receive, according to what was said above (n. 239). This therefore is what is signified by, I counsel thee to buy of me white garments, that thou mayest be clothed.

1201. That 'Sidon' means the exterior cognitions of spiritual things is clear from the fact that he is called 'Canaan's firstborn', for in the internal sense the firstborn of every Church is faith, see 352, 367. Here however, where faith does not exist because internal things are missing they are no more than exterior cognitions of spiritual things taking the place of faith, thus cognitions such as those with the Jews which are cognitions not only of the ceremonies of external worship but also of many other things belonging to that worship, such as matters of doctrine. That 'Sidon' has this meaning is also evident from the fact that Tyre and Sidon were the furthest limits of Philistia, and were in fact by the sea. 'Tyre' therefore meant interior cognitions, and 'Sidon' those which were exterior, and yet cognitions of spiritual things. This is also clear from the Word: in Jeremiah,

On the day that is coming to lay waste all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remains, for Jehovah is laying waste the Philistines, the remnants of the island of Caphtor. Jeremiah 47:4.

Here 'the Philistines' stands for knowledge of the cognitions of faith and charity, 'Tyre' for interior cognitions, and 'Sidon' for cognitions of spiritual things.

[2] In Joel,

What are you to Me, O Tyre and Sidon, and all the borders of Philistia? You have taken My silver and gold, and My good and desirable treasures you have carried into your temples. Joel 3:4-5.

Here 'Tyre' and 'Sidon' clearly stand for cognitions and are called 'the borders of Philistia', for 'gold and silver' and 'good and desirable treasures' are cognitions. In Ezekiel,

The princes of the north, all of them, and every Sidonian, who have gone down with the slain 1 into the pit. He was made to lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with those slain' by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude. Ezekiel 32:30, 32.

Here 'the Sidonian' stands for exterior cognitions, which when devoid of things that are internal are nothing else than facts, and it is for this reason that he is mentioned along with Pharaoh, or Egypt, who means facts. In Zechariah,

Hamath also will border on it, Tyre and Sidon, for it is exceedingly wise. Zechariah 9:2.

This refers to Damascus. 'Tyre and Sidon' stands for cognitions.

[3] In Ezekiel,

The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers; your wise men, O Tyre, were in you, they were your pilots. Ezekiel 27:8.

Here 'Tyre' stands for interior cognitions, and therefore her wise men are called 'pilots', while 'Sidon' stands for exterior cognitions and her inhabitants are therefore called 'rowers', for such is the relationship of interior cognitions to exterior. In Isaiah,

The inhabitants of the island are silent, O merchant of Sidon passing over the sea; they have replenished you. But on the great waters the seed of Shihor, the harvest of the river, was her revenue, and was the merchandise of nations. Blush, O Sidon, for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea saying, I have not gone into labour, nor have I given birth, nor reared young men, nor brought up virgins. Isaiah 23:2-5.

Here 'Sidon' stands for exterior cognitions which, because they have nothing internal within them are called 'the seed of Shihor, the harvest of the river, her revenue, the merchandise of the nations', and also 'the sea, the stronghold of the sea', and 'one that does not go into labour and give birth'. What these expressions may mean could never be discerned in the literal sense, but their meaning is perfectly plain in the internal sense, as with everything else in the Prophets. Since 'Sidon' means exterior cognitions it is also referred to as the region surrounding Israel, which is the spiritual Church, Ezekiel 28:24, 26, for exterior cognitions are like a surrounding region.
