1 Maar in het laatste der dagen zal het geschieden, dat de berg van het huis des HEEREN zal vastgesteld zijn op den top der bergen; en hij zal verheven zijn boven de heuvelen, en de volken zullen tot hem toevloeien.

2 En vele heidenen zullen henengaan, en zeggen: Komt en laat ons opgaan tot den berg des HEEREN, en ten huize van den God Jakobs, opdat Hij ons lere van Zijn wegen, en wij in Zijn paden wandelen; want uit Sion zal de wet uitgaan, en des HEEREN woord uit Jeruzalem.

3 En Hij zal onder grote volken richten, en machtige heidenen straffen, tot verre toe; en zij zullen hun zwaarden slaan tot spaden, en hun spiesen tot sikkelen; het ene volk zal tegen het andere volk geen zwaard opheffen, en zij zullen den krijg niet meer leren.

4 Maar zij zullen zitten, een ieder onder zijn wijnstok, en onder zijn vijgeboom, en er zal niemand zijn, die ze verschrikke; want de mond des HEEREN der heirscharen heeft het gesproken.

5 Want alle volken zullen wandelen, elk in den naam zijns gods; maar wij zullen wandelen in den naam des HEEREN, onzes Gods, eeuwiglijk en altoos.

6 Te dien dage, spreekt de HEERE, zal Ik haar, die hinkende was, verzamelen, en haar, die verdreven was, vergaderen, en die Ik geplaagd had.

7 En Ik zal haar, die hinkende was, maken tot een overblijfsel, en haar die verre henen verstoten was, tot een machtig volk; en de HEERE zal Koning over hen zijn op den berg Sions, van nu aan tot in eeuwigheid.

8 En gij Schaapstoren, gij Ofel der dochter Sions! tot u zal komen, ja, daar zal komen de vorige heerschappij, het koninkrijk der dochteren van Jeruzalem.

9 Nu, waarom zoudt gij zo groot geschrei maken? Is er geen Koning onder u? Is uw Raadgever vergaan, dat u smart, als van een barende vrouw, heeft aangegrepen?

10 Lijd smart en arbeid om voort te brengen, o dochter Sions! als een barende vrouw; want nu zult gij wel uit de stad henen uitgaan, en op het veld wonen, en tot in Babel komen, maar aldaar zult gij gered worden; aldaar zal u de HEERE verlossen uit de hand uwer vijanden.

11 Nu zijn wel vele heidenen tegen u verzameld, die daar zeggen: Laat ze ontheiligd worden, en laat ons oog schouwen aan Sion.

12 Maar zij weten de gedachten des HEEREN niet, en verstaan Zijn raadslag niet; dat Hij hen vergaderd heeft als garven tot den dorsvloer.

13 Maak u op en dors, o dochter Sions! Want Ik zal uw hoorn ijzer maken, en uw klauwen koper maken, en gij zult vele volken verpletteren; en Ik zal hunlieder gewin den HEERE verbannen, en hun vermogen den HEERE der ganse aarde. [ (Micah 4:14) Nu, rot u met benden, gij dochter der bende, hij zal een belegering tegen ons stellen; zij zullen den rechter Israels met de roede op het kinnebakken slaan. ]

Exploring the Meaning of Micah 4

Micah 4:1,2. When a church stops honoring what is good and what is true it comes to an end, and the Jehovah sets up a new church. 1 The prophesy of Micah, like many of the other prophecies in the Bible, tells about such a happening: the end of the Israelitish church, and the start of Christianity. 2 The older words are used because they still mean the same spiritual idea. Jehovah was Jacob's God,, just as He is our God today. Zion and Jerusalem still correspond to the good and truth of the Lord’s church. 3

Micah 4:3,4. In that new church - that "house of God" - everyone will have spiritual truth written on the heart. Changing weapons into farming tools, and not going to war anymore, means that people will agree about the Lord’s truth without any dispute, and - because there are no evils in that house - they will be safe and without fear.

Micah 4:5. The Word uses many names for God, and any name is okay when it means the one creator, savior and redeemer. 4

Micah 4:6. Of those who "go up", all who need help will be given what they need.

Micah 4:7. Jehovah shall reign over all who are walking in his ways. 5 Those who are outcasts mean those who can’t see where to walk. Those that are lame can’t walk. The outcasts will have their eyes opened, and the lame will have their legs healed.

Micah 4:8-10. The "daughter of Zion" 6 means the affection of truths and goods with those of the church. The bringing forth means the multiplication of goods and truths because of the affection for them. Inhabiting the field means that the church will learn truths of many kinds and may even understand what Babylon has spoiled. But there will be no harm there, since the Lord protects.

Micah 4:11, 12. Falsities want to infest those who belong to the Lord, but He protects them. People who hold those falsities will be “threshed”, or judged.

Micah 4:13. The goods and truths that the Lord provides are as “iron” or “bronze”. 7 The falsities that are to be “threshed” aren't as strong, and can’t withstand them.

There are a lot of truths here for us, and there are appealing images. If we "go up" -- try to learn the true ideas in Christianity, and to walk in the Lord's ways, there will be healing, and affection, and understanding, and multiplying good, and protection.

4551. 'And the jewels which were in their ears' means realized in actions. This is clear from the meaning of 'jewels' as symbols representative of obedience, for the reason that by 'the ears' is meant obedience, 2542, 3869, and acts of obedience are realizations in actions; for obeying implies carrying into action. Here the expression 'realized in actions' has reference to the falsities which were to be cast aside. But this matter of the casting aside of falsities, which are realized also in actions - the subject at this point in the internal sense - must be discussed briefly here. Before a person through being regenerated by the Lord arrives at good and is moved by good to do what is true, he possesses very many falsities mixed up with truths. Indeed he is led into regeneration by means of the truths of faith, about which in the first stage of life he has no ideas other than those learned in infancy and childhood. These ideas are formed from external things in the world and from the experiences of the physical senses, and therefore they cannot be anything but illusions and consequently falsities, which are also realized in actions; for what a person believes he puts into practice. It is these falsities that are meant here. They remain with him until he has been regenerated, that is, until good is the source of his actions. Once this is the situation, good - that is, the Lord by means of good - imposes order on the truths which he has learned up to then; and while this is being done the falsities are separated from the truths and taken away.

[2] A person is totally unaware of this happening to him, yet that kind of removal and casting aside of falsities is going on from earliest childhood to the last stage of his life. This activity goes on in everyone, but it does so in a particular manner in one who is being regenerated. In one who is not being regenerated a similar activity is taking place, for when he becomes grown up and he matures in judgement that belongs to that stage in life, he regards his childhood judgements as unintelligent and absurd, thus very far removed from what he now thinks. But the difference between one who is regenerate and one who is not is that the regenerate regards as being remote from his thinking those things which do not accord with the good of faith and charity, whereas the unregenerate regards as being remote from his thinking those which do not accord with the delight he takes in what he loves. The unregenerate therefore, for the most part, regards truths as falsities, and falsities as truths. As regards jewels there were two kinds - those fastened above the nose to the forehead and those fastened to the ears. Those fastened above the nose to the forehead were symbols representative of good and were called nose-jewels, dealt with in 3103, whereas those fastened to the ears were symbols representative of obedience and are ear-jewels. But in the original language the same word is used to describe both nose-jewel and ear-jewel.
