¹ 全地は同じ発音、同じ言葉であった。

² 時に人々は東に移り、シナルの地に平野を得て、そこに住んだ。

³ 彼らは互に言った、「さあ、れんがを造って、よく焼こう」。こうして彼らは石の代りに、れんがを得、しっくいの代りに、アスファルトを得た。

⁴ 彼らはまた言った、「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう。そしてわれわれは名を上げて、全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」。

⁵ 時に主は下って、人の子たちの建てる町と塔とを見て、

⁶ 言われた、「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた。彼らがしようとする事は、もはや何事もとどめ得ないであろう。

⁷ さあ、われわれは下って行って、そこで彼らの言葉を乱し、互に言葉が通じないようにしよう」。

⁸ こうして主が彼らをそこから全地のおもてに散らされたので、彼らは町を建てるのをやめた。

⁹ これによってその町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を乱されたからである。主はそこから彼らを全地のおもてに散らされた。

¹⁰ セムの系図は次のとおりである。セムは百歳になって洪水の二年の後にアルパクサデを生んだ。

¹¹ セムはアルパクサデを生んで後、五百年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。

¹² アルパクサデは三十五歳になってシラを生んだ。

¹³ アルパクサデはシラを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。

¹⁴ シラは三十歳になってエベルを生んだ。

¹⁵ シラはエベルを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。

¹⁶ エベルは三十四歳になってペレグを生んだ。

¹⁷ エベルはペレグを生んで後、四百三十年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。

¹⁸ ペレグは三十歳になってリウを生んだ。

¹⁹ ペレグはリウを生んで後、二百九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。

²⁰ リウは三十二歳になってセルグを生んだ。

²¹ リウはセルグを生んで後、二百七年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。

²² セルグは三十歳になってナホルを生んだ。

²⁴ ナホルは二十九歳になってテラを生んだ。

²⁵ ナホルはテラを生んで後、百十九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。

²⁶ テラは七十歳になってアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生んだ。

²⁷ テラの系図は次のとおりである。テラはアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生み、ハランはロトを生んだ。

²⁸ ハランは父テラにさきだって、その生れた地、カルデヤのウルで死んだ。

²⁹ アブラムとナホルは妻をめとった。アブラムの妻の名はサライといい、ナホルの妻の名はミルカといってハランの娘である。ハランはミルカの父、またイスカの父である。

³⁰ サライはうまずめで、子がなかった。

³¹ テラはその子アブラムと、ハランの子である孫ロトと、子アブラムの妻である嫁サライとを連れて、カナンの地へ行こうとカルデヤのウルを出たが、ハランに着いてそこに住んだ。

³² テラの年は二百五歳であった。テラはハランで死んだ。

¹ Yahweh, you are my God. I will exalt you! I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago, in complete faithfulness and truth.

² For you have made a city into a heap, a fortified city into a ruin, a palace of strangers to be no city. It will never be built.

³ Therefore a strong people will glorify you. A city of awesome nations will fear you.

⁴ For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat, when the blast of the dreaded ones is like a storm against the wall.

⁵ As the heat in a dry place will you bring down the noise of strangers; as the heat by the shade of a cloud, the song of the dreaded ones will be brought low.

⁶ In this mountain, Yahweh of Armies will make all peoples a feast of fat things, a feast of choice wines, of fat things full of marrow, of well refined choice wines.

⁷ He will destroy in this mountain the surface of the covering that covers all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations.

⁸ He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for Yahweh has spoken it.

⁹ It shall be said in that day, "Behold, this is our God! We have waited for him, and he will save us! This is Yahweh! We have waited for him. We will be glad and rejoice in his salvation!"

¹⁰ For in this mountain the hand of Yahweh will rest. Moab will be trodden down in his place, even like straw is trodden down in the water of the dunghill.

¹¹ He will spread out his hands in its midst, like one who swims spreads out hands to swim, but his pride will be humbled together with the craft of his hands.

¹² He has brought the high fortress of your walls down, laid low, and brought to the ground, even to the dust.
