1 Post tiuj okazintajxoj oni sciigis al Jozef: Jen, via patro estas malsana. Kaj li prenis kun si siajn du filojn, Manase kaj Efraim.

2 Kaj oni sciigis al Jakob, dirante: Jen via filo Jozef venas al vi. Tiam Izrael strecxis siajn fortojn kaj sidigxis sur la lito.

3 Kaj Jakob diris al Jozef: Dio la Plejpotenca aperis al mi en Luz, en la lando Kanaana, kaj benis min.

4 Kaj Li diris al mi: Mi fruktigos vin kaj multigos vin kaj faros vin amaso da popoloj, kaj Mi donos cxi tiun landon al via idaro post vi kiel eternan posedajxon.

5 Kaj nun viaj du filoj, kiuj naskigxis al vi en la lando Egipta antaux mia alveno al vi en Egiptujon, estas miaj; Efraim kaj Manase estu al mi, kiel Ruben kaj Simeon.

6 Sed viaj infanoj, kiuj naskigxos al vi post ili, estu viaj; per la nomo de siaj fratoj ili estos nomataj en sia hereda parto.

8 Kaj Izrael ekvidis la filojn de Jozef, kaj diris: Kiuj estas cxi tiuj?

9 Kaj Jozef diris al sia patro: Ili estas miaj filoj, kiujn donis al mi Dio cxi tie. Kaj tiu diris: Alkonduku ilin al mi, kaj mi benos ilin.

10 La okuloj de Izrael malfortigxis de maljuneco, li ne povis bone vidi. Jozef alkondukis ilin al li, kaj li kisis ilin kaj cxirkauxprenis ilin.

11 Kaj Izrael diris al Jozef: Vidi vian vizagxon mi ne esperis, kaj jen Dio vidigis al mi ecx vian idaron.

12 Kaj Jozef forigis ilin de liaj genuoj, kaj klinigxis antaux li vizagxaltere.

13 Kaj Jozef prenis ambaux, Efraimon per sia dekstra mano, kontraux la maldekstra de Izrael, kaj Manasen per sia maldekstra mano, kontraux la dekstra de Izrael, kaj alkondukis ilin al li.

14 Sed Izrael etendis sian dekstran manon kaj metis gxin sur la kapon de Efraim, kvankam li estis la pli juna, kaj sian maldekstran sur la kapon de Manase; li intence tiel faris per siaj manoj, cxar Manase estis la unuenaskito.

18 Kaj Jozef diris al sia patro: Ne tiel, mia patro, cxar cxi tiu estas la unuenaskito; metu vian dekstran manon sur lian kapon.

19 Sed lia patro rifuzis, kaj diris: Mi scias, mia filo, mi scias; li ankaux farigxos popolo kaj li ankaux farigxos granda, sed lia pli juna frato estos pli granda ol li, kaj lia idaro estos multenombra inter la popoloj.

20 Kaj li benis ilin en tiu tago, dirante: Per vi benados Izrael, dirante: Dio vin faru kiel Efraim kaj Manase. Kaj li metis Efraimon antaux Manase.

21 Kaj Izrael diris al Jozef: Jen mi mortas; kaj Dio estos kun vi kaj revenigos vin en la landon de viaj patroj.

6256. 'And the eyes of Israel were weak' means his obscurity of discernment. This is clear from the meaning of 'the eyes' as the sight of the understanding, dealt with in 2701, 4087, 4379, 4403-4421, also meant by 'seeing', as above in 6249; from the representation of 'Israel' as spiritual good within the natural, dealt with above in 6253; and from the meaning of 'being weak', when used in reference to the eyes, as obscurity, thus obscurity of discernment. The reason Why Israel's discernment had become obscure when he blessed Joseph's sons was that he had reached the final phase of his representation, though a more general reason is that an obscurity of perception exists in the spiritual good which 'Israel' represents; for that good comes from the natural, in which inferior natural light predominates, not superior heavenly light in which spiritual and celestial good from the rational dwells. Such is the nature of the external man, also called the natural man. When the expression 'spiritual good from the natural' is used, people whose good is such are meant. They are those who belong to the Lord's spiritual Church, which also is why 'Israel' represents that Church, 4286; and compared with celestial people, members of that Church, who are spiritual people, live in obscurity, see 2708, 2715, 2716, 2718, 2831, 2849, 2935, 2937, 3246, 4402. And since they live in obscurity they also put the truth of faith in the first place, even as Israel did here, in that he made Ephraim take precedence over Manasseh.

[2] The reason why spiritual people believe that the truth of faith takes precedence is that it is by means of truth that they are led on to good, 2954; and while they are being led to it they have no perception of good because good flows from within into an affection for truth, and so does not enter their discernment until they have been regenerated. This also explains why they call the good deeds of charity the fruits of faith, though little concern is shown for such fruits by those who suppose that faith alone without good works saves a person, even in the final hour when he dies, irrespective of the life he had led before that. This way of thinking is clearly an obscurity of discernment regarding goodness and truth. But be that as it may, those who make faith take precedence over charity on doctrinal grounds and yet lead a charitable life are people who belong to the Lord's spiritual Church and are saved. For in life they make the good of charity take precedence, but in doctrine the truth of faith.

2701. 'God opened her eyes' means intelligence. This is clear from the meaning of 'opening' - and that it is God who did so - and also from [the meaning] of 'the eyes', as conferring intelligence; for 'the eyes' means the understanding, see 212, as also does 'sight' or 'seeing', 2150, 2325. The expression 'God opens the eyes' is used when He opens interior sight or the understanding, which opening is accomplished by means of an influx into the rational part of the person's mind, or rather into the spiritual part of his rational. The route taken by this influx is the soul, that is, the internal route, of which the person himself is not aware. This influx is his state of enlightenment in which the truths he hears or reads about are confirmed for him by a kind of perception existing within, in the understanding part of his mind. The person himself believes that this enlightenment is innate within himself and that it springs from his own power of understanding; but in this he is very much mistaken. This enlightenment consists in an influx from the Lord by way of heaven into that person's dim, mistaken, and specious sight of things, and by means of the good there causes the things which he believes to become imitations of truth. Only those who are spiritual however are blessed with enlightenment in spiritual matters of faith; and this is the meaning of the expression 'God opens the eyes'.

[2] The reason why 'the eye' means the understanding is that the sight belonging to the body corresponds to that belonging to its spirit, which is the understanding. And because it has this correspondence 'the eye' in the Word, in almost every place where it is mentioned, means the understanding, even where people believe something other is meant, as where the Lord says in Matthew,

The lamp of the body is the eye. If the eye is sound, the whole body is full of light. If the eye has been evil the whole body has been made full of darkness. If therefore the light is darkness, how great is the darkness! Matthew 6:22-23; Luke 11:34.

Here 'the eye' is the understanding, the spiritual constituent of which is faith, as also is shown by the explanation added here - 'if therefore the light is darkness, how great is the darkness!' Similarly in the same gospel,

If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. Matthew 5:29; 18:9.

'The left eye' is the understanding part of the mind, whereas 'the right eye' is its affection. The command to pluck out the right eye means that if it causes one to stumble one's affection must be disciplined.

[3] In the same gospel,

Blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. Matthew 13:16.

And in Luke, Jesus said to the disciples, Blessed are the eyes which see what you see. Luke 10:23.

Here 'the eyes which see' means intelligence and faith, for it was not the mere fact that they saw the Lord and also His miracles and works that caused any one of the disciples to be blessed but the fact that they could grasp things with their understandings and had faith, meant by 'seeing with the eyes', and that they were obedient, meant by 'hearing with the ears'. As regards 'seeing with the eyes' meaning to see with the understanding and also to have faith, see 897, 2325. For the understanding is the spiritual complement of sight, and faith the spiritual complement of the understanding. The sight of the eye is received from the light of the world, the sight of the understanding from the light of heaven flowing into things which belong to the light of the world; but the sight of faith is received from the light of heaven. This is the origin of such phrases as seeing with the understanding and seeing with faith. 'Hearing with the ear' means being obedient, see 2542.

[4] In Mark,

Jesus said to the disciples, Do you not yet know nor understand? Do you still have your heart hardened? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? Mark 8:17-18.

Here it is evident that 'having eyes but not seeing' means not wishing to understand and not believing. In Luke,

Jesus said of the city, Would that you knew the things that make for your peace! But such is hidden from your eyes. Luke 19:41-42.

And in Mark,

By the Lord has this been done, and it is marvellous in our eyes. Mark 12:11.

Here 'hidden from the eyes' and 'marvellous in the eyes' mean to be so to the understanding, as is well known to everyone from the meaning of 'the eyes' even in everyday speech.
