Heaven and Hell #132

132. Since divine truth is the light in the heavens, all true things are luminous there wherever they occur - whether within an angel, outside of an angel, within the heavens, or outside of the heavens. Still, the truths outside the heavens do not shine the way the truths inside the heavens do. The truths outside the heavens shine coldly, like something snowy, without warmth, because unlike truths within the heavens, they do not derive their essence from what is good. So that cold light disappears at the touch of heaven's light; and if there is some underlying evil, it turns to darkness. I have seen this several times, along with many other remarkable things concerning luminous truths, which I forego for now.

Apocalypse Revealed #818

818. 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, "See that you do not do this! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!" This symbolically means that angels in heaven are not to be worshiped or invoked, because they have nothing Divine in them, but are associated, as brethren with brethren, with those people who worship the Lord, and therefore the Lord alone is to be worshiped in association with them.

John's falling at the angel's feet to worship him, and the angel's saying to him, "See that you do not do this," means symbolically that no angel in heaven is to be worshiped or invoked, but the Lord only. "I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren" means symbolically that there is no Divinity in any angel, but that an angel is associated with a person as a brother with a brother. Having the testimony of Jesus means symbolically that a person is in the same way conjoined with the Lord, by an acknowledgment of the Divinity in the Lord's humanity, and by living in accordance with His commandments. That having the testimony of Jesus has this symbolic meaning will be seen in the following number.

Angels in heaven are not superior to people, but are their equals, and therefore they are the Lord's servants the same as people; and the reason is that all angels were once people, born in the world, and none were created angels directly, as can be seen from what we wrote and showed in the book Heaven and Hell (London, 1758). Angels excel people in wisdom indeed, but that is because they are in a spiritual state and so live in the light of heaven, and are not in a natural state and so do not live in the light of the world as people on earth do. But the more an angel excels in wisdom, the more he acknowledges that he is not better than people, but like them. Consequently people are not conjoined with angels, but are associated with them. Only with the Lord is conjunction possible.

But how conjunction with the Lord and association with angels are achieved through the Word may be seen in The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem Regarding the Sacred Scripture, nos. 62-69.

Arcana Coelestia #2146

2146. 'As the day was getting warmer' means generated by love. This is clear from the meaning in the internal sense of 'warmth' as love. And because the word warmth is used either of the day or of the year, love is represented either by the warm part of the day or by the warm part of the year, depending on what is mentioned in the historical narratives. That 'warmth' means love becomes clear from the fact that love is called spiritual warmth and by the fact that even in everyday speech a person's whole affection is meant by his increasing warmness. The same is further clear from the fact that love and its affections show themselves as a type of warmth in man's interiors, and also in his exteriors, and even in his actual bodily parts. Indeed that warmth has no other origin in a person when it is flowing out from his interiors. But as is the nature of the love, so is that of the warmth. Celestial love and spiritual love are what produce genuine warmth. Every other kind of warmth - namely that generated by self-love and love of the world, and so by other filthy loves - is unclean and turns in the next life into excrement, see 1773. Furthermore it should be realized that the expression holiness cannot be used except of love and charity and cannot be used of faith except insofar as love or charity are present within the truths of faith. But for that presence in them the truths of faith are not holy at all. See what has been stated already in 2049.
