6637. Deze zijn de namen van de zonen Israëls, dat dit het hoedanige van de Kerk betekent, staat vast uit de betekenis van de naam, namelijk het hoedanige, waarover de nrs. 144, 145, 1754, 1869, 2009, 2628, 2724, 3006, 3421; uit de uitbeelding van de zonen Israëls, namelijk de geestelijke ware dingen, waarover de nrs. 5414, 5879, 5951; en uit de uitbeelding van Israël, te weten het goede van het ware ofwel het geestelijk goede, waarover de nrs. 3654, 4598, 5803, 5806, 5812, 5817, 5819, 5826, 5833.

Omdat Israël het goede van het ware of het geestelijk goede uitbeeldt en zonen de geestelijke ware dingen in het natuurlijke, beelden daarom de zonen Israëls de Kerk uit, want de Kerk is Kerk krachtens het geestelijk goede en het ware daaruit.

Wie niet in het geestelijk goede is, dat wil zeggen, in het goede van de naastenliefde en in de geestelijke waarheden, dat wil zeggen, in de ware dingen van het geloof, is niet van de Kerk, ook al is hij binnen de Kerk geboren; het gehele hemelse rijk van de Heer is immers in het goede van de liefde en het geloof; indien de Kerk niet in een eender goede is, kan zij de Kerk niet zijn, omdat zij niet verbonden is met de hemel, want de Kerk is het rijk van de Heer op aarde.

Dat zij Kerk wordt genoemd, is niet uit hoofde hiervan dat het Woord daar is en dat de leerstellingen daaruit zijn, noch uit hoofde hiervan dat de Heer daar bekend is en dat de sacramenten daar zijn, maar zij is Kerk uit hoofde hiervan dat men leeft volgens het Woord of volgens de leer uit het Woord en dat de leer het richtsnoer van het leven is; zij die niet zodanig zijn, zijn niet van de Kerk, maar zijn buiten haar; en zij die in het boze leven, dus die tegen de leer leven, zijn verder buiten de Kerk dan de heidenen die in het geheel niets weten ten aanzien van het Woord, ten aanzien van de Heer en ten aanzien van de sacramenten; want de eerstgenoemden blussen bij zich de Kerk uit, omdat zij de goede en ware dingen van de Kerk weten, wat de heidenen niet kunnen doen, omdat zij van die zaken onwetend zijn.

Men moet eveneens weten dat eenieder die in het goede van de naastenliefde en het geloof leeft, een Kerk is en dat hij een koninkrijk van de Heer is; vandaar wordt hij ook een tempel genoemd en ook een huis Gods.

Uit degenen die Kerken zijn in het bijzonder, wordt, hoezeer zij ook van elkaar verwijderd zijn, de Kerk in het algemeen gesticht.

Dit nu is de Kerk die onder de zonen Israëls hier en in wat volgt wordt verstaan.

6637. 'These are the names of the children of Israel' means the essential nature of the Church. This is clear from the meaning of' the name as the essential nature, dealt with in 144, 145, 1754, 1896, 2009, 2628, 2724, 3006, 3421; from the representation of 'the sons of Israel' as spiritual truths, dealt with in 5414, 5879, 5951; and from the representation of 'Israel' as the good of truth, which is spiritual good, dealt with in 3654, 4598, 5803, 5806, 5812, 5817, 5819, 5826, 5833. Since Israel' represents the good of truth or spiritual good and 'his sons' represent spiritual truths in the natural, 'the sons of Israel' also represent the Church, for what makes it the Church is spiritual good and the truths that spring from that good. A person without spiritual good, that is, the good of charity, and without spiritual truths, that is, the truths of faith, does not belong to the Church in spite of having been born within the Church. The whole of the Lord's heavenly kingdom possesses the good of love and faith, and unless the Church possesses good like that it cannot be the Church since it is not joined to heaven; for the Church is the Lord's kingdom on earth.

[2] The term 'Church' is not used because it is the place where the Word is and teachings drawn from it, or because it is where the Lord is known and the sacraments are celebrated. Rather it is the Church because it lives in accordance with the Word or with teachings drawn from the Word, and seeks to make those teachings its rule of life. People who do not live like this do not belong to the Church but are outside it; and those who lead wicked lives, thus lives contrary to that teaching, are further away outside the Church than gentiles who know nothing whatever about the Word, the Lord, or the sacraments. For since those people are acquainted with the forms of good that the Church fosters and with the truths it teaches they annihilate the Church within themselves, something gentiles cannot do because they are unacquainted with those things. It should also be realized that everyone who leads a good life, in charity and faith, is a Church, and is a kingdom of the Lord. He is for that reason also called a temple, and a house of God too. Those who are Churches individually, no matter how remote from one another they may be, constitute one Church collectively. This then is the Church meant by the expression 'the children of Israel' here and in what follows.

4859. 'And covered herself with a veil' means the truth was rendered obscure. This is clear from the meaning of 'covering oneself (that is, covering one's face) with a veil' as concealing and so rendering obscure truth which pretended to spring from good, as immediately above in 4858. Tamar did this so that she might become joined to Judah. For when brides first approached their bridegrooms they used to cover themselves with a veil, as one reads of Rebekah doing when she came to Isaac, Genesis 24:65, by which appearances of truth were meant, see 3207. 'A wife' means truth and 'a husband' good; but because truth as it really is does not show itself before it is joined to its good, therefore - to represent this reality - brides used to cover themselves with a veil when seen for the first time by their husbands. Here Tamar acted in a similar way, for she supposed that Shelah, Judah's son, should be her husband. But because she had not been given to him she then supposed that his father should perform the duty of a husband's brother instead. Therefore she covered herself with a veil as a bride would do. She did not cover herself as a whore would have done, though Judah supposed that this was what she was because in those times whores were likewise accustomed to cover their faces, as is evident from verse 15. The reason Judah supposed she was that kind of woman was that the Jewish nation, which is there meant by 'Judah', rated the internal truths of the representative Church as low as a whore. Therefore Judah was joined to her as though she were a whore; but Tamar's joining to him was not like that. Because internal truths could not be seen by that nation in any other way than this, the words used here 'she covered herself with a veil' therefore mean that truth was rendered obscure. The fact that the truth of the Church has been rendered obscure to members of that nation is also represented at the present day in their synagogues when they cover themselves with shawls or veils.

[2] Something similar was also represented by the skin on Moses' face shining when he came down from Mount Sinai, so that he covered himself with a veil every time he spoke to the people, Exodus 34:28-end. Moses represented the Word that is called the Law, see Preface to Chapter 18; and that is why sometimes the expression 'the Law and the Prophets' is used, as in Matthew 5:17; 11:13; 22:36, 40, and sometimes 'Moses and the Prophets', as in Luke 16:29, 31; 24:27, 44. The skin shining on his face represented the inner reality of the Word, for 'the face' means that which is internal, 358, 1999, 2434, 3527, 4066, 4796, 4797; for being spiritual, that inner reality dwells in the light of heaven. The veiling of his face every time he spoke to the people represented the fact that for members of that nation internal truth was covered and thus was rendered obscure so that they would not be exposed to any light at all from it.
