¹ And there was a famine in the land, besides^◦ the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to^▵ Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

² And Jehovah appeared to^▵ him, and said, Go· not ·down into Egypt; inhabit the land of which I speak^◦ to^▵ thee.

³ Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for to thee, and to thy seed, I will give all these lands, and I will raise·​·up the promise which I promised to Abraham thy father.

⁴ And I will cause thy seed to be multiplied as the stars of the heavens, and will give to thy seed all these lands; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed,

⁵ because^▵ Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.

⁶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

⁷ And the men^◦ of the place asked him as·​·to his woman^*; and he said, She^◦ is my sister; for he feared to say, She is my woman; lest the men^◦ of the place should kill me on·​·account of Rebekah; because^◦ she^◦ was good in appearance.

⁸ And it was, because^◦ the days were there prolonged to him, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked·​·out through a window, and saw, and behold Isaac was laughing with^◦ Rebekah his woman.

⁹ And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Surely behold she^◦ is thy woman. And how^◦ saidst thou, She^◦ is my sister? And Isaac said to^▵ him, Because^◦ I said, Lest I die on·​·account·​·of her.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done to us, in that one of the people might have lightly lain·​·down with^◦ thy woman, and thou wouldst have brought guilt upon us?

¹¹ And Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, He who touches this man^◦ and his woman, dying he shall die.

¹² And Isaac sowed in that^◦ land, and found in that^◦ year a hundred measures, and Jehovah blessed him.

¹³ And the man^◦ became·​·great, and went on going^◦ and becoming·​·great until that he became· very ·great.

¹⁴ And he had^◦ livestock of the flock, and livestock of the herd, and much service; and the Philistines were·​·envious of him.

¹⁵ And all the wells that his father’s servants dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines blocked· them ·up, and filled them with dust.

¹⁶ And Abimelech said to^▵ Isaac, Go from with us; for thou art exceedingly more numerous than we.

¹⁷ And Isaac went thence, and encamped by the brook of Gerar, and dwelt there.

¹⁸ And Isaac returned, and dug again^* the wells of waters which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father; and the Philistines blocked· them ·up after the death of Abraham; and he called them by names according·​·to the names which his father called them.

¹⁹ And the servants of Isaac dug in the gully, and found there a well of living waters.

²⁰ And the shepherds of Gerar strove with Isaac’s shepherds, saying, The waters are ours; and he called the name of the well Esek, because^◦ they contended^◦ with him.

²¹ And they dug another well, and they strove over that also, and he called the name of it Sitnah^*.

²² And he moved·​·away from thence, and dug another well, and over it they strove not, and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now Jehovah has made us to be enlarged, and we shall be·​·fruitful in the land.

²³ And he went·​·up from thence to Beer-sheba.

²⁴ And Jehovah appeared to^▵ him in that^◦ night, and said, I^▵ am the God of Abraham thy father; fear not, for I^▵ am with^◦ thee, and I will bless thee, and will multiply thy seed, on^◦ account·​·of Abraham My servant.

²⁵ And he built there an altar, and called upon^◦ the name of Jehovah, and stretched his tent there, and there the servants of Isaac dug·​·out a well.

²⁶ And Abimelech went^◦ to^▵ him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his companion, and Phichol the commander^◦ of his army.

²⁷ And Isaac said to^▵ them, Wherefore have you come to^▵ me, and you^◦ have hated me, and have sent· me ·away from^◦ you.

²⁸ And they said, Seeing we have seen that Jehovah was with thee; and we said, We pray^◦ thee, let there be an oath between us, between us and thee, and let us cut a covenant with thee.

²⁹ If thou shalt do evil with us, as^◦ we have not touched thee, and as^◦ we have done only good with thee, and have sent· thee ·away in peace; thou^◦ art now the blessed of Jehovah.

³⁰ And he made for them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

³¹ And they got·​·up·​·early in the morning, and promised a man^◦ to his brother; and Isaac sent· them ·away, and they went from^◦ him in peace.

³² And it was, in that^◦ day, that the servants of Isaac came and told him concerning the matter^◦ of the well which they had dug; and they said to him, We have found waters.

³³ And he called it Shebah^*; therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba^* even·​·to this day.

³⁴ And Esau was a son of forty years, and he took for a woman Jehudith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

³⁵ And they were bitterness of spirit to Isaac and to Rebekah.

¹ And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

² Speak to^▵ the sons of Israel, that they turn·​·back and encamp before Pi-hachiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon; opposite it you shall encamp by the sea.

³ And Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, They are·​·perplexed in the land, the wilderness has closed· them ·in.

⁴ And I will make· the heart of Pharaoh ·firm, and he shall pursue after them; and I will be glorified in Pharaoh, and in all his host; and the Egyptians shall·​·know that I^◦ am Jehovah. And they did so.

⁵ And it was·​·told the king of Egypt that the people fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?

⁶ And he harnessed his chariot, and took his people with him;

⁷ and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and third-ranking leaders upon all of them.

⁸ And Jehovah made·​·firm the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the sons of Israel; and the sons of Israel went·​·out by an exalted hand.

⁹ And the Egyptians^◦ pursued after them, and overtook them encamping by^◦ the sea, all the horses of the chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his forces, by^◦ Pi-hachiroth before Baal-zephon.

¹⁰ And Pharaoh came·​·near, and the sons of Israel lifted·​·up their eyes, and, behold, Egypt was journeying after them, and they feared exceedingly; and the sons of Israel cried to^▵ Jehovah.

¹¹ And they said to Moses, are there no graves in Egypt, that thou hast taken us to·​·die in the wilderness? What is this that thou hast done to us, to bring· us ·out from Egypt?

¹² Is not this the word that we spoke to thee in Egypt, saying, Forbear from us, and let us serve the Egyptians? For it is good for us to serve the Egyptians, rather than we should die in the wilderness.

¹³ And Moses said to the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of Jehovah, which He will do for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall see them again no^◦ more for an age.

¹⁴ Jehovah shall wage war for you, and you shall be·​·silent.

¹⁵ And Jehovah said to Moses, Why criest thou to Me? speak to the sons of Israel, that they journey.

¹⁶ And thou^◦, lift·​·high thy rod, and stretch·​·out thy hand over the sea, and split it apart; and the sons of Israel shall come into the midst of the sea on the dry.

¹⁷ And I^◦, behold, I will make·​·firm the heart of the Egyptians, and they shall come after them; and I will be glorified in Pharaoh, and in all his host, in his chariots, and in his horsemen.

¹⁸ And the Egyptians shall·​·know that I am Jehovah, when I am glorified in Pharaoh, in his chariots, and in his horsemen.

¹⁹ And the angel of God journeyed, walking before the camp of Israel, and he went behind them; and the pillar of cloud journeyed from before them and stood behind them;

²⁰ and it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness, and it gave·​·light to the night; and the one came· not ·near the other all the night.

²¹ And Moses stretched·​·out his hand over the sea; and Jehovah made the sea go back by a strong east wind all the night, and set the sea to dry·​·up^◦, and the waters were split apart.

²² And the sons of Israel came into the midst of the sea on the dry; and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.

²³ And the Egyptians pursued, and came after them, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen, into the midst of the sea.

²⁴ And it was in the morning watch^▵, and Jehovah looked·​·out to^▵ the camp of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and of cloud, and routed the camp of the Egyptians.

²⁵ And He removed the wheel of his chariots, and he drew it in heaviness; and the Egyptian said, I will flee before Israel; because Jehovah wages war for them against the Egyptians.

²⁶ And Jehovah said to Moses, Stretch out thy hand over the sea, and let the waters return upon the Egyptians, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

²⁷ And Moses stretched·​·out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned at the turning^◦ of the morning to the strength of its flow; and the Egyptians fled to meet it; and Jehovah shook·​·off the Egyptians into the midst of the sea.

²⁸ And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, even all the forces of Pharaoh that came after them into the sea; there was not left of them even one.

²⁹ And the sons of Israel went on the dry into the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.

³⁰ And Jehovah saved Israel on^◦ this^◦ day out·​·of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the lip of the sea.

³¹ And Israel saw the great hand which Jehovah made on the Egyptians, and the people feared Jehovah; and they believed in Jehovah, and in His servant Moses.
