1 Så var det en mann av Levis hus som gikk bort og tok en Levis datter til ekte.

2 Og kvinnen blev fruktsommelig og fødte en sønn; og da hun så at det var et vakkert barn, skjulte hun ham i tre måneder.

3 Men da hun ikke lenger kunne skjule ham, tok hun en kiste til ham av rør og smurte den over med jordbek og tjære, og hun la gutten i den og satte den i sivet ved elvebredden.

4 Men hans søster stod et stykke fra for å få vite hvorledes det gikk ham.

5 Da kom Faraos datter ned til elven for å bade sig, mens hennes jomfruer gikk frem og tilbake på elvebredden; hun fikk se kisten midt i sivet og sendte sin pike avsted og lot den hente.

6 Da hun åpnet den, så hun barnet, og se, det var en gutt som lå der og gråt; da ynkedes hun over ham og sa: Det er en av hebreernes guttebarn.

7 Da sa hans søster til Faraos datter: Skal jeg gå og hente en amme til dig blandt de hebraiske kvinner, så hun kan fostre op barnet for dig?

8 Faraos datter svarte henne: Ja, gå! Og piken gikk og hentet guttens mor.

9 Da sa Faraos datter til henne: Ta denne gutt og fostre ham op for mig; jeg vil gi dig lønn for det. Og konen tok gutten og fostret ham op.

10 Da gutten blev voksen, gikk hun med ham til Faraos datter, og han blev som en sønn for henne; hun kalte ham Moses*, for - sa hun - av vannet har jeg dradd ham op. / {* den som er dradd op av vannet.}

11 Og det hendte på den tid da Moses var blitt voksen, at han gikk ut til sine brødre og så på deres slit og slep, og han fikk se en egyptisk mann som slo en hebraisk mann, en av hans brødre.

12 Da vendte han sig hit og dit og så at det ikke var nogen der, og så slo han egypteren ihjel og skjulte ham i sanden.

13 Den andre dag gikk han atter ut og så to hebraiske menn som holdt på å slåss; da sa han til ham som hadde urett: Hvorfor slår du din landsmann?

14 Han svarte: Hvem har satt dig til høvding og dommer over oss? Tenker du å slå mig ihjel, likesom du slo egypteren ihjel? Da blev Moses redd og sa: Sannelig, saken er blitt kjent.

15 Da Farao fikk høre det, søkte han å slå Moses ihjel; men Moses flyktet for Farao, og han tok bolig i landet Midian og bodde ved en brønn.

16 Presten i Midian hadde syv døtre; de kom og øste op vann og fylte vannrennene for å vanne sin fars småfe.

17 kom det nogen gjætere og drev dem bort; men Moses stod op og hjalp dem og vannet deres småfe.

18 Da de så kom hjem til e'uel, sin far, sa han: Hvorfor kommer I så snart idag?

19 De svarte: En egyptisk mann hjalp oss mot gjæterne, og han øste også vann for oss og vannet småfeet.

20 Da sa han til sine døtre: Hvor er han da? Hvorfor lot I mannen bli igjen der? Be ham inn, så han kan ete med oss!

21 Og Moses samtykket i å bli hos mannen; og han lot Moses få sin datter Sippora til hustru.

22 Hun fikk en sønn, og han kalte ham Gersom*; for han sa: Jeg er blitt en gjest i et fremmed land. / {* utlending der.}

23 Da lang tid var gått, døde kongen i Egypten, og Israels barn sukket over sin trældom og klaget; og deres rop over trældommen steg op til Gud.

24 Og Gud hørte deres sukk, og Gud kom i hu sin pakt med Abraham, Isak og Jakob.

25 Og Gud så til Israels barn, og Gud kjentes ved dem.

6744. 'Take to yourself this child' means that she should link him to herself. This is clear from the meaning of 'taking to' as linking; from the meaning of the mother, to whom 'to yourself' refers here, as the Church, dealt with just above in 6742; and from the representation of Moses, to whom 'child' refers here, as the law of God in its earliest stages. In the highest sense, which describes what went on with the Lord, those were the stages that occurred when He was working to make His Human the law of God; and in the relative sense, which describes what goes on with a person who is being regenerated, they are the stages that occur when he is being introduced into God's truth, see above in 6716.

6716. 'A man from the house of Levi went' means truth which has its origin in good. This is clear from the meaning of 'a man as truth, dealt with in 3134; from the meaning of being 'from the house' as the origin; and from the representation of 'Levi' as good. In the highest sense 'Levi' represents Divine Love, dealt with in 3875, and in the internal sense spiritual love, 3875, 4497, 4502, 4503; and since he represents love, he represents good, because all good comes from love. As regards truth which has its origin in good, meant here by 'a man from the house of Levi', it should be recognized that the verses which follow deal in the highest sense with the Lord, with the way in which His Human became the law of God, that is, real Truth. It is well known that the Lord was born like anyone else and that when He was a young child he learned to talk like any other young child, after which He grew in knowledge, and also in intelligence and wisdom.

[2] From this it is evident that His Human was not Divine when He was born but that He made it Divine by His own power. He made it Divine by His own power because He had been conceived from Jehovah, as a result of which the inmost core of His life was Jehovah Himself. For the inmost core of anyone's life, called the soul, is derived from the father, whereas that which clothes what is inmost, called the body, is derived from the mother. The inmost core of life derived from the father is constantly flowing into and having an effect on the external derived from the mother, endeavouring even in the womb to make it similar to itself. This may be recognized in the fact that children are born with their father's disposition, and sometimes grandchildren and great grandchildren with their grandfather's and great grandfather's disposition. The reason for this is that the soul, which is derived from the father, constantly wishes to make the external derived from the mother similar to itself and an image of itself.

[3] Seeing that this is what goes on with man, one may recognize that it was what went on especially with the Lord. The inmost part of Him was the Divine Itself because it was Jehovah Himself, for He was Jehovah's only-begotten Son. And since that inmost part was the Divine Itself, how, more so than with any man, could the Divine fail to make the external derived from the mother an image of itself, that is, similar to itself, so that the Human - the external, derived from the mother - would be made Divine? This He accomplished by His own power because the Divine, which was the Inmost by which He had an effect on His Human, was His in the same way as a person's soul, which is the inmost part of him, belongs to that person. And because the progress which the Lord made conformed to Divine order, He made His Human, while He was in the world, to be Divine Truth; but after that, when He was fully glorified, He made it to be Divine Good, and so one with Jehovah.

[4] How this was accomplished is what is described in the highest sense of the present chapter. But since the contents of the highest sense, which all have to do with the Lord, surpass human understanding, let what follows be an explanation of the things contained in the internal sense of the chapter. These have to do with the beginnings and the succeeding states of God's truth with a member of the Church, that is, with a person who is being regenerated, 6713, 6714. The reason why these are the things contained in the internal sense is that human regeneration is an image of the glorification of the Lord's Human, see 3138, 3212, 3245, 3246, 3296, 3490, 4402, 5688.
